In 2008 Grand Valley State University Libraries began a large weeding project in the automated retrieval system (ARS) at its Steelcase Library. An estimated 19,000 volumes were to be removed from the ARS. A systematic weeding of the ARS had never been undertaken and it presented a number of logistical challenges. Abstract

The Rodgers Science and Engineering Library which serves students, faculty and researchers in the fields of science, engineering and nursing at the University of Alabama abandoned centralized scanning of electronic reserve materials and moved to branch library scanning in 2003. This article is about how the Library handled the transition in terms of management issues such as planning, executing, training, supervising, monitoring quality and promoting the remote service to faculty and students.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Since 2002, library faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine have taught third-year medical students how to retrieve the best evidence from MEDLINE to address their clinical questions. In preparation for their Neurology, Medicine, and Psychiatry clerkships, students attended a review of evidence-based medicine principles and techniques for searching the literature. The session was team-taught by two faculty members, one from the Internal Medicine department and the other from the Library. The librarian reviewed important MEDLINE principles for constructing a good subject search and applying appropriate evidence-based filters. During the clerkships, students were asked to generate clinical questions arising from their patient encounters, searched MEDLINE for the best evidence, critiqued the results, and then applied them back to their patients' care. Library faculty provided individualized feedback on the student searches. A follow-up session two months later reinforced MEDLINE principles, used student searches as examples, and extended the discussion to other evidence-based, point-of-care resources. To add to the interactivity of the follow-up sessions, librarians used an audience response system to measure students' understanding of literature retrieval techniques and to gauge student preferences for information seeking on clinical topics. Overall, the sessions have been well-received by the students.  相似文献

Abstract

The impacts of technology upon traditional library resources are sometimes unexpected. The library at California's University of the Pacific discovered that usage of print materials was dwindling, even though the addition of a 50-station “Information Commons” had bolstered overall library use. At first it was anticipated that the circulation desk might, within several years, be downsized into a mere information kiosk. Nevertheless, a study of the two service points-the Information Commons and the Circulation Desk-concluded that patrons still seek library services with a personal touch and continue to demand print materials. A “user satisfaction” survey revealed no mandate from users for the abandonment of print materials. As in the past, the services of the circulation desk have adapted to fit its users.  相似文献

This article describes the evolution of the Health Sciences Library's plans for an interdisciplinary, technology-enhanced collaboration center, from a technology-driven space to one with a vision of support for peer-to-peer learning and research. The center offers an exciting opportunity to be an essential partner in collaborative and interdisciplinary programs such as the new Carolina Center for Exploratory Genetic Analysis. The Library is a centrally located and neutral place, which helps minimize geographical and territorial obstacles to effective collaboration. The collaboration center raises the Library's visibility and allows staff to demonstrate the value of knowledge resources, services, technology expertise, infrastructure, and facilities for group study and collaboration.  相似文献

Anxiety experienced while in a public speaking situation (speech anxiety) is discussed within the framework of Trait‐State Anxiety Theory. Speech anxiety may be considered a dispositional variable designed to measure individual differences in speech anxiety proneness (Speech A‐Trait) or a measure of anxiety experienced during a particular speech (Speech A‐State). Physiological and behavioral measures of speech anxiety are typically viewed as A‐State measures. Self‐report indices may be considered either state or trait anxiety measures depending on the context in which the measures were obtained. The development of a scale to measure both Speech A‐State and Speech A‐Trait, including initial normative, reliability, and validity data, is reported.  相似文献

Because XML is misunderstood, the method to institute an XML-first workflow is mired in confusion. XML is about defining and structuring content, and is applied through the normal editorial and production process. An XML-first workflow can be easily implemented using the typical software (e.g., Microsoft Word and InDesign) used within the publishing chain. Necessary to an XML-first workflow is a structured consistent methodology. The technical requirements are fairly simple. Once accomplished an XML-first workflow can help publishers meet the business and technological problems we face.  相似文献

A university library implemented a three-pronged marketing action plan to increase library visibility on campus. The plan included a publicity campaign, a formalized liaison program, and a user satisfaction survey. The year-long effort did return library instruction statistics to earlier levels but did not increase reference usage. Of the steps in implementing an Information Commons, one of the most important is the planning phase. For the planning and implementation to be a success, buy-in and support from library users and administrators is essential. The result of the planning process is a detailed planning document that will influence the success of the commons. The document should include plans for policy changes, space for the commons, staffing issues, and assessments, both before and after implementation. Even with all the planning completed, an evaluation of the viability of and desirability for a commons should determine whether a commons should be implemented on each individual campus.  相似文献

The Internet has had a profound impact on the way people access and use information, especially in the area of monitoring and protecting human rights. This article reviews the development of the University of Minnesota Human Rights Library, one of the largest collections of human rights documents available on the web. The focus is on how the collection was built, how it is used to support research and teaching, and how it is maintained.
