This is a review of Integrating Concepts in Biology, an innovative electronic textbook intended for either or both semesters of a typical introductory biology sequence. The e-book is an excellent example of effective pedagogy informed by recent educational scholarship.Integrating Concepts in Biology (ICB) is the apt title of this groundbreaking electronic textbook (see Supplemental Material). The target audience is students seeking an introduction to biology. It is structured to focus student attention on key concepts underlying biology at all levels of organization. In contrast to the current encyclopedic model of an introductory textbook, this e-book makes effective use of electronically linked text and online resources, selects examples to explore in depth, and offers students means to deepen their understanding. It explicitly uses current ideas about student learning, supported by evidence of best practices, to help students develop as biologically literate thinkers. The authors are colleagues at Davidson College: biologists A. Malcolm Campbell (cellular and molecular biology) and Christopher J. Paradise (ecology) and mathematician/computer scientist/bioinformaticist Laurie J. Heyer. They share a common passion for innovative pedagogy and multidisciplinarity, and ICB is their laudable effort to address many of the widely recognized problems evident in introductory biology texts and introductory courses and explored in recent reports such as BIO2010 (National Research Council [NRC], 2003 ) and Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2011 ).  相似文献

The well-being of modern economies and societies is increasingly requiring citizens to possess capabilities in integrating knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering and science to solve problems. However, by the end of schooling, the majority of Australian students show little interest in these discipline areas and have no plans to continue study or work in them; many refer to these disciplines as boring. Further, they typically have little experience in integrating knowledge and skills from these disciplines and/or in applying this to solve relevant problems. Therefore, there is a need to engage students with such learning experiences to develop their interest and capabilities, particularly during the early years of secondary schooling. This is not easy for teachers to respond to, but with the support of modern digital technologies and the new Australian curriculum, the potential is expanded and the challenge is more readily achievable. However, appropriate pedagogies need to be supported that include more authentic approaches to assessment. Learning activities need to support students to integrate knowledge and skills across discipline areas in tackling real problems, and this also needs to be reflected in how students are assessed. In this paper, I will draw on personal experience as a teacher, a review of recent literature, components of the Australian Curriculum, and findings from research projects associated with my University research centre, to argue for, and illustrate how, teachers can orchestrate powerful learning activities to promote an interdisciplinary approach to STEM.  相似文献

Energy is one of the most important unifying themes in science. Yet the way energy is conceptualized varies depending on context. In this paper, the discourse used to explain the role of energy in systems from biology, chemistry, and physics is examined from the perspective of metaphor theory. Six substance metaphors for energy are identified in pedagogical discourse (i.e., textbooks and the science education literature): energy as a substance that can be accounted for, can flow, can be carried, can change forms, can be lost, and can be an ingredient, a product or stored in some way. Each of these conceptual metaphors highlight and obscure various characteristics of energy, and provide a set of frameworks that each afford a different understanding of the energy concept.  相似文献

The Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) technique allows students to be engaged in course material outside of the classroom by answering web-based questions. The responses are summarized and presented to students in class with a follow-up active learning exercise. College students enrolled in an introductory-level general education geoscience course were surveyed over a two-semester period on their engagement level during lecture and perceived learning of course content. Data show that students are able to reflect on their prior knowledge and construct new knowledge with weekly graded JiTT exercises. Despite increasing and competing pressures outside of the classroom, students reported increased learning and engagement in a course with required weekly assignments.  相似文献

Today’s employers seek high levels of creativity, communication, and critical thinking, which are considered essential skills in the workplace. Engaging undergraduate students in critical thinking is especially challenging in introductory courses. The advent of YouTube, inexpensive video cameras, and easy-to-use video editors provides opportunities to increase students’ skill levels in these areas. In this article I explain the assignment of producing a public service announcement that integrates research, collaborative learning, and creativity into an introductory survey course; and I discuss the support necessary for students’ success.
