Policy Metamorphosis in China: A Case Study of Minban Education in Shanghai

This is a book on policy study in the Chinese mainland by an insider with an outsider perspective.With contemporary policies on minban schooling in Shanghai as a case study,Ding illustrates and analyzes a case of policy metamorphosis in the contemporary Chinese mainland. The book is based on a well-designed qualitative study with 65 in-depth interviews in 2001 and 2004.Ding tries to figure out the logic of policy implementation in Shanghai as an "insider" while having a clear awareness of the dilemma of studying a policy issue in her own culture.She makes the best use of her identity as an insider,not only as a Chinese but as someone who knows some "inside" stories concerning the issue interviewed.As Ding pointed out,"I had obtained some firsthand information about minban education in Shanghai,so that when I sensed that the informants were talking superficially,I let them know that I had heard some inside stories (which usually had very different versions).In this way,sensitive data emerged." (Ding,2011,p.145).This is true,since the views expressed in most interview data Ding collected cannot be found in public or official documents,and are also rarely found in the academic literature.

Synthesis of CdSe quantum dots via paraffin liquid and oleic acid

This paper reported an efficient and rapid method to produce highly monodispersed CdSe quantum dots （QDs）, in which the traditional trioctylphosphine oxide （TOPO） was replaced by paraffin liquid as solvent and oleic acid as the reacting media. The experimental conditions and the properties of QDs had been studied in detail. The resulting samples were confirmed of uniform size distribution with transmission electronic microscopy （TEM）, while UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence （PL） spectra clearly indicated that such synthesized QDs had good fluorescence properties.

O fickle moon!Here is a natural illusion which you can test for yourself on a dear night. Look at the size of a full moon when it is just over the horizon. Then check it again when it is high in the sky. When it is lower, it seems to be about one and a half times as big as when it is higher. Interestingly, this is not an illusion that shows up in photographs.

The Analysis on the "Iceberg" Writing Style

"Iceberg" writing style was created by the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway, who pioneered a new style of writing that is almost commonplace today. "Iceberg" style, as its name, was strong and marvelous in the hiding the 7/8 part while just appeared 1/8. The concealed parts of an iceberg were the implication in Hemingway’s stories. It combined the sensibility and thinkability of literature together in a subtle way and let readers explore the implied meaning from the striking images in the works.
