Demonstrating Our Value: Tying Use of Electronic Resources to Academic Success

Dr. Stephanie Havron Rollins, Instruction Coordinator, and Ed Cherry, Systems Librarian at Samford University, presented the results of their research that measured the use of library electronic resources and academic success as defined by a higher grade point average (GPA). They presented statistics on student database log-ins by college, department, and major; student log-ins by level, class, and gender; and student undergraduate GPA by department and class. Research implications were discussed along with future research ideas. Their findings demonstrate to library stakeholders the impact that the library has on student success.     

Stacks,Serials, Search Engines,and Students' Success: First-Year Undergraduate Students' Library Use,Academic Achievement,and Retention

Like other units within colleges and universities, academic libraries are subject to increasing internal and external pressures to demonstrate their contributions to institutional goals related to students' success. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between first-year undergraduate students' use of the academic library, academic achievement, and retention. Results of ordinary least squares regressions predicting first-year students' cumulative grade point averages (GPA) and logistic regressions predicting students' first-year to second-year retention suggest that students who used academic library services and resources at least once during the academic year had higher GPA and retention on average than their peers who did not use library services. The results of two separate regressions predicting students' GPA by 10 different types of library use suggest that four library use areas were consistently and positively associated with students' GPA: database logins, book loans, electronic journal logins, and library workstation logins. The results of two separate logistic regression analyses suggest that logging into databases and using library workstations were actions consistently and positively associated with students' retention. Additional results predicted by students' use of services at least one time and by one-unit increases in the frequency of library area uses are discussed.     

Our Journey from Print to Electronic Resources: An Acquisitions Perspective at a Caribbean Academic Library

This article seeks to add to the body of literature about the provision and management of electronic resources in academic libraries in developing countries. It recognizes the importance of providing increased electronic information to users and describes the efforts of an academic library in the Caribbean to address this need. The role of the Acquisitions and Serials Unit in making this transition possible is explored. Furthermore, an assessment of the progress attained in the transition process is documented, including issues encountered, many of which have not yet been resolved. Future plans for successful development of an increased electronic resources environment have also been proposed.

[目的/意义]探讨电子资源使用监控与统计系统的数据获取质量评估方法,为提升数据准确性和可靠性提供依据,为高校图书馆评估和应用此类系统提供参考。[方法/过程]分析数据质量评估的内容、指标和难点,对数据质量评估的3种主要方法进行介绍,并结合北京大学图书馆的实践对其作用和局限进行探讨。[结果/结论]从信息丰度、准确性、及时性等指标对北京大学图书馆评估结果进行总结,并从应用范围、数据监测反馈、原始流量保存等几个方面对系统下一步应用提出建议。     

Impact of the E-Journals of Academic Libraries Consortium on Research Productivity: An Iranian Consortium Experience

Abstract

This article reports on a research project undertaken at a university in Iran to study the impact of academic libraries consortium on research productivity. The overall objective of study was to examine to what extent the subscribed resources meet the needs of users and to determine the quality of cited journals by researchers. It also examined the relationship between the access method to a cited journal, its quality and the average citing to it. The results of the present research can help decision makers for selecting and providing suitable resources and databases based on the users' needs.

Electronic Resources for Alumni: A Review of ARL Academic Library Websites

Providing electronic resources for alumni requires careful consideration of a number of legal, technical, financial, and administrative questions by academic libraries. Our review of 115 library websites, including 114 academic library members of the Association of Research Libraries along with Stanford University, reveals in large part what is being made available to alumni and how the information is organized, but also raises more questions for investigation.

通过引入开放存取和机构仓储的概念,结合资源提供商的垄断给我国图书馆的电子资源许可使用所带来的困境,提出灵活运用不同的计价模式、购买模式来创新图书馆电子资源的引进方式,推进图书馆资源体系整合优化以应对许可使用所带来的不利因素,推动开放获取和机构仓储来应对资源提供商的垄断等建议,以为促进我国电子资源的可持续发展开拓思路。     

Collaboration in Electronic Resource Provision in University Libraries: SHEDL,a Scottish Case Study

This case study examines the growth of collaboration among Scottish higher education institutions. Following a summary of the work of the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries (SCURL), more detailed information is provided on collaboration in the fields of acquisition, licensing, selection, and purchasing. Some of the UK background is outlined, relating to NESLi2 in particular, in order to illuminate the options within Scotland. The origins of negotiations on electronic resource provision within Scotland are described, drawing on developments in other countries including Ireland and Scandinavia. After initial setbacks, the implementation of the Scottish Higher Education Digital Library (SHEDL) from 2007 to 2009 is detailed. Current benefits arising from SHEDL are explained, and some possible future developments are discussed.

通过网上调查分析了山西省高校图书馆电子资源建设的现状,揭示了所存在的一系列问题,并为今后山西省高校图书馆电子资源建设的发展提供了相应的建议与对策。     

国外图书馆利用对高校学生学习成果影响的研究综述

[目的/意义]图书馆利用对高校学生学习成果的影响研究既可以证明图书馆对学校办学效力的贡献,又可以通过强化对学习成果有积极影响的资源和服务来提高图书馆的工作成效。为使我国相关研究人员对国外先进的研究理念、分析思路及相关研究的发展趋势有系统、深入的了解,提高我国在该领域的研究成果质量,并有效指导图书馆的工作实践,对相关研究进行系统评述。[方法/过程]通过网络数据库检索出53篇相关文献,首先梳理研究的发展历史;然后对研究内容要素进行分析、归纳和总结;重点对两类研究进行深入分析和评述;最后对我国的相关研究提出展望。[结果/结论]发达国家的相关研究日趋成熟,有常态化、规范化的发展趋势。建议我国图书馆学界从三方面提升研究质量:①加强制度建设,以制度促进研究的发展;②扩大调查规模和调查范围,强化研究结果的可信性和代表性;③注重加强与高等教育评估领域的合作。
