Service Learning in the Community College: Drive to Employment

As community college leaders strive for institutional efficacy, programs are needed to promote student success through the alignment of curricular objectives and community needs. To meet this objective, service learning (SL) is becoming increasingly popular in the community college. A new SL program called Drive to Employment (DTE) was developed as a means of preparing students for employment by serving unemployed and underemployed community clients. As a result, the curriculum was better connected to workplace competencies, students were prepared for employment, and the capacity of community-based partner organizations was expanded. An overview of DTE will familiarize stakeholders with SL, lessons learned, and the potential impact of similar programs on student, institutional, and community outcomes.     

The Effect of Service Learning on Community College Students

This study discusses the implementation of a service learning component in community college communication 101 level courses. Through the execution of a service learning component in communication classes at a community college, students’ communicative competency and attitude toward community service is assessed. Using two different delivery approaches, a quantitative study assessed the pretest and posttest of the standardized tool Communicative Adaptability Scale (CAS). Eight sections of communication 101 courses were distributed into two groups: (a) an experimental group and (b) a control group. The experimental group (n = 69) was required to finish a service learning project consisting of 15 hours by the end of the semester. The control group (n = 64) students did not participate in a community service project. Quantitative research methods were applied through data collection of the CAS taken by participants preimplementation and postimplementation of the service learning component, which was a community service project. The CAS results support that the implementation of service learning significantly increases students’ communication adaptability and competence.     

Civic Engagement Among Community College Students Through Service Learning

Higher education has been called upon to prepare its graduates to be civically engaged community members. Since the 1980s, faculty have taken up this call. Service learning is a common strategy that educators have adopted to stimulate civic engagement in students. In this study, service learning students and nonservice learning students from eight community colleges were given precourse and postcourse surveys on civic engagement. Results revealed a statistically significant increase in service learners’ civic engagement when compared to nonservice learners. The findings are consistent with other higher education studies that use an expanded definition of civic engagement.     

大学英语课堂上培养学生跨文化交际心态

跨文化交际能力的培养有赖于跨文化知识的学习,但更需要培养跨文化交际心态。针对我国应试教育的特点,大学英语教师应从课堂等本族语文化交际环境中启发和培养学生跨文化交际的心态,以提高学生跨文化交际能力。     

Toward Radicalizing Community Service Learning

This article advocates a radicalized theoretical construction of community service learning. To accomplish this radicalization, I initially take up a discussion of traditional understandings of CSL rooted in pragmatic/progressive thought. I then suggest that this traditional structural foundation can be radicalized by incorporating Deborah Britzman's (1998) “difficult knowledge” and Cornell West's (1989) historic catastrophe into that traditional structure. In conclusion, I discuss the implications that such a radicalized understanding of CSL entails.

Perceptions of Reform-Based Teaching and Learning in a College Mathematics Class

This study investigated, from the students',professor's, and researchers' perspectives, the effects of a reform-based introductory undergraduate mathematics course, and the efforts of a mathematics professor to teach such a course. The class had been designed for teacher candidates of middle school mathematics and science (Grades 4 to 8) but was open to all qualified students. We addressed the following research question: What perceptions about learning and teaching mathematics emerged through the participants' experiences in a reform-based mathematics course? Results of the analysis of the data suggested that the teacher candidates and the professor took an important first step toward enculturation into a reform-based vision of mathematics learning and teaching. Implications for mathematics faculty and teacher education faculty interested in promoting reform-based mathematics are presented.

文章采用问卷调查的形式,对民族院校非英语专业学生英语学习心理状况进行了调查,分析了心理因素与学习效果的关系,探索了培养学生良好学习心理的策略。

一项跟踪某高校大学英语教师学习共同体的个案研究表明：以课堂教学研究为核心的教师学习共同体,从情感和知识技能两个维度促进了大学英语教师科研成长及身份转变。教师学习共同体打破以往自上而下的教师团队建设形式,有利于促进教师师徒传授和同伴互助,是普通大学英语教师专业发展的有效途径。

学习共同体是一种全新的合作学习方式,是一种自主、平等和互惠的合作共同体。教师学习共同体与学校是利益共同体,学校通过搭建教学共同体、科研共同体、技术攻关共同体等合作学习的组织平台,为教师合作提供良好的空间。学校可以在合作氛围创设、平台搭建、机制完善和资源保障上发挥作用,为教师之间的合作学习和专业成长创造更多的有利条件。

本文首先考察语言焦虑的定义以及对外语学习的影响，然后讨论了合作学习理论的基本含义和理论基础，并分析了合作学习在哪些方面有利降低焦虑。最后提出合作学习适合处理语言焦虑，同时提高学生的交际能力。     

地方高校大学生学习心理状况调查研究

以“中国大学生学习性投入调查问卷”(NSSE-China)为工具,针对哈尔滨市某高校学生进行调查.围绕问卷指标中的“向学/厌学”即学生学习心理状况进行分析,且与问卷指标中的“自我报告教育收获”进行了深度比较,以求得高校学生学习心理的特征,寻找高校在教育过程中的问题并给出建议,达到提高高校教育质量的目的.     

Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning in College English Reading Class

Cooperative learning emerging as the leading new approach to classroom instruction abroad over the past decades has been studied by many researchers from all aspects.This paper mainly focuses on the basics of cooperative learning and tries to answer the question that if the use of cooperative learning produce higher achievement than the traditional methods in college English reading class through experimental study.The analysis contributes to better college English teaching and learning.A conclusion is drawn that cooperative learning is very effective in improving college students reading ability.
