AN ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING MODEL: A NECESSARY TOOL FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENTS AND BOARDS OF TRUSTEES

How can community college presidents and boards of trustees safely manage the ethical dilemmas they face as they lead their institutions into the future and important resources continue to diminish? And what happens when a board member violates the board's code of conduct or the president either fails to consult a professional ethics code or ignores it? This article considers such a scenario. Recognizing that ethical dilemmas are complex and involve emotional responses, this article presents a nonlinear, multidimensional ethical decision-making model that can help presidents and boards maneuver through difficult situations in an ethical manner. This decision-making model consists of six steps to guide presidents and boards as they consider the most ethical course of action for their college and the community. These steps include (a) identifying the ethical dilemma; (b) gathering facts, self-monitoring, and consulting; (c) asking important questions; (d) creating alternate courses of action; (e) evaluating alternatives by the ethics code, law, and moral motivation; and (f) implementing a course of action by moral follow-through and virtue ethics.

DEVELOPING A CULTURE FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

Positive behaviour management is high on the education agenda. This paper will describe the relationship between organisational culture and positive behaviour management. As an example of good practice the authors highlight a secondary Pupil Referral Unit which has undergone a significant change over the last three years leading to an enhanced ability to support, re‐direct and sustain the education of disaffected pupils. Many of the principles discussed are also considered to be of relevance to mainstream education.

高等学校仪器设备管理水平的高低,不仅直接影响到高校仪器设备的使用,而且还影响到高校教学、科研工作的有效开展.本文从高校仪器设备的管理现状着手,分析管理中出现的问题,提出了一些整改的意见及对策.     

ACTION RESEARCH WITH GRADUATE STUDENTS: A TOOL FOR ACTIVE LEARNING

Abstract

This research explored the needs, expectations, and experiences of early childhood teachers as they worked together in graduate study. The study looked at data collected from graduate students in three courses that were part of a pilot program. In this program, traditional (M.Ed. students) and non‐traditional (uncertified teachers working in low SES urban child care centers) graduate students were enrolled in the same early childhood graduate courses. Following New Jersey Supreme Court mandated universal preschool in 30 low SES districts, non‐traditional students were required to obtain the new (P‐3) teaching certification. Results showed that most students valued their learning experiences. Additionally, combining the two groups of learners created significantly more ethnic diversity in the graduate classes. Challenges included decreasing class size, creating a sense of community for learners from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and maintaining the rigor of course material while meeting the needs of students who do not have a strong theoretical background.

高等学校管理的模糊信息定量评价理论

本文根据辩证法和系统论的基本思想,应用社会经济统计学和模糊数学的基本原理,借助计算机语言,发展了一种从所获之模糊信息中计算得出并给予高校管理以定量评价的新方法。该方法既体现了科学性和先进性,又不失实用性和可操作性。     

COMMUNITY COLLEGE MANAGEMENT IN TRANSITION: AN ASSESSMENT OF CHANGE

Community colleges tend to follow an authoritarian type of management, but many educational leaders are attempting to develop and implement a more open and participatory management system in these colleges. This is a study of one college in the process of making the change from an authoritarian system to one that would involve the faculty and staff extensively in the process of goal setting and decision making. In this case study, which relied heavily on semistructured interviews to assess the feelings of administrators and faculty toward organizational changes, it was found that the college was more open. Individuals appeared to be more receptive to change and innovations and to have increased willingness to participate in institutional governance. The faculty and administrators expressed the feeling that they had developed a broader view of the organization and a greater sense of trust. The results of the study suggest that the process might have been assisted by using even more in‐service training and by providing a fuller management structure.     

一位大学讲师的文化战争宣言-评白壁德的《文学与美国的大学》

白壁德的《文学与美国的大学》对十九世纪晚期以来美国大学盛行的“各种各样的潮流都自由地进行了批判”。该书因此可以看成是一篇文化战争宣言。宣言公开出版于1908年,当时白壁德已经43岁,与他同龄的同事大都早已成为教授,而他虽然在哈佛教了十四年的书,却仍只是一位讲师,依旧在为谋求终身教职抗争。

意义是人的生存根据,我们这个时代是一个意义缺失的时代。所以,意义的追寻构成每一个人的内心焦虑,它在根本上就是个人与世界较量的过程。拥有意义的人就是拥有完整性和超越性心灵的人。有意义的生活就是在已有的世界里创造未来的世界。     

A PERSISTENCE MODEL FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE URBAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS

A considerable amount of effort is expended encouraging students to enroll in higher education programs. It is, therefore, disappointing to all concerned when students fail to complete their programs. It is even more distressing when one particular group of enrollees is identified as failing to persist with their studies at a disproportionately high rate. This was the issue faced by Kennedy‐King College during the early 1990s. The African American male, nontraditional student (either more than 24 years old, or part‐time enrollee, or live off campus), was identified in this category with the withdrawal/departure behavior becoming a serious and increasing problem.

Kennedy‐King College is a non‐residential, two‐year community college located in a neighborhood of Chicago that is predominantly African American (97%), low income (70% below the poverty level), with a comparatively high crime rate and a public school system that has been described as “somewhat ineffective.” More than 30% of the students are residents of this community.

The study consisted of a literature review; consideration of the variables identified from the review that had previously been thought to affect student persistence; quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis carried out with the African American male students; the development and testing of a persistence model incorporating previous and newly identified variables; and the development of a college strategy designed to increase the persistence of these students.
