Transforming Developmental Reading Through Information Literacy: Developing A Contextualized Course Curriculum

ABSTRACT

Skill and drill remediation in developmental reading courses do not prepare students for reading tasks in future college-level courses. When a skill and drill model is replaced with a model that utilizes contextualization, students engage in relevant activities with authentic texts to prepare students for college-level activities. The reading department at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) eliminated the skill and drill textbook from its courses and teamed with library faculty to create a curriculum integrated with information literacy. Reading and library faculty provided students contextualized project-based activities that integrated reading and information literacy strategies. The development, redesign, and implementation of CGCC’s reading program that eliminated textbooks and contextualized information literacy and reading strategies through project-based activities are described in the present study. This study further addresses gaps in the literature regarding a fully contextualized reading course that can be implemented for no more cost than the cost of a traditional curriculum.

本文着重论述了高校图书馆信息素质教育之特色,分析了当前大学生信息素质现状,从而提出了高校图书馆对大学生进行信息素质教育的有效途径与方法,以使大学生成为合格人才,适应社会需要。

批判性思维在信息素养中有着极其重要的作用,这种作用表现为分析与评价信息的清晰性与正确性、准确性与相关性、广度与深度、含义与重要性以及信息的道德合法使用等,并最终做出指导信仰与行动的判断.因此培养学生信息素养的一个关键是发展他们的批判性思维,向每一个学生提供的应该是基于批判性思维的信息素养教育,这种教育促使学生把批判性思维应用到他们熟悉与关切的现实生活中去.     

Testing a Model of Program Curriculum Leadership

This study tests the curriculum leadership framework that Stark and Lattuca adapted from Quinn's model of management styles. Chairpersons of departments nominated as effective in curriculum planning answered a survey about their leadership activities and styles. Factor analysis partially supported the model. Activities that chairs reported did not correspond well, however, with leadership styles they chose as most effective.

Critical Literacy,Disciplinary Literacy: Reading the Engineering-Designed World

Globally, many people spend most of their time interacting with the products of engineering design as they wear clothes, drink clean water, use transportation systems, and more. Given the omnipresence of engineering design, whose material results are felt daily in people’s lives, it seems especially important that students learn to recognize and question how certain designs promote the welfare and interests of some while remaining inaccessible to others. In this article, we outline a vision for critical literacy instruction in engineering that simultaneously incorporates and challenges professional standards. We—an associate professor of literacy, an engineer, and a teacher at an engineering-focused high school—illustrate how critical literacy instruction might be enacted in the context of engineering design instruction in high schools. We describe how critical literacy can complement disciplinary literacy instruction in engineering as students use critically-focused, disciplinary lenses to move toward social justice.

This article provides a framework for practitioners and policy actors that links leadership and literacy. The focus is on the specification of research-anchored scaffolding that can assist school administrators and policy players in their quest to strengthen student performance in reading. The framework itself isbuilt frommaterial culled from4 lines ofempirical investigation: quality instruction, effective reading programs, school effects, and educational leadership. The analysis represents an important dimension of what we refer to as second-generation work on instructional leadership.
