Child Care Subsidies and the School Readiness of Children of Immigrants

This study is the first to test whether receipt of a federal child care subsidy is associated with children of immigrants' school readiness skills. Using nationally representative data (n ≈ 2,900), this study estimates the associations between subsidy receipt at age 4 and kindergarten cognitive and social outcomes, for children of immigrant versus native‐born parents. Among children of immigrants, subsidized center‐based care (vs. subsidized and unsubsidized home‐based care) was positively linked with reading. Among children of native‐born parents, those in subsidized center care displayed poorer math skills than those in unsubsidized centers, and more externalizing problems than those in unsubsidized home‐based care.     

异地中考政策限制是否影响了随迁子女教育支出？——基于2019年千村调查及中国教育追踪调查的实证分析

基于上海财经大学2019年千村调查数据和中国教育追踪调查数据,研究考察了异地中考政策限制及不同限制类型对随迁子女教育支出的影响,探讨了其与随迁子女群体内部教育公平的联系,并进行了一系列的稳健性检验及影响机制分析。研究结果表明：第一,异地中考政策限制对随迁子女家庭各类教育负担率均存在显著的负向影响,同时显著抑制了随迁子女的扩展性教育支出,而对教育总支出及基础性教育支出均无显著影响;第二,随着异地中考政策的限制程度不断提高,政策限制对随迁子女扩展性教育支出的抑制作用则越显著;第三,政策限制对扩展性教育支出的抑制作用在女孩、非独生子女、低认知能力子女、经济困难家庭子女等“相对弱势”群体中更为显著;第四,政策限制在长期内降低了家庭对随迁子女的教育期望,在短期内则直接限制了父母对子女的学业重视程度,进而减少对子女的扩展性教育支出。

作文在高考语文科目中占有较大的比重，加强高考作文教学是提高学生高考语文成绩之关键。要提高高考作文水平，必须增加作文训练的量，研究话题作文的写作要旨，同时还需要选用不同类型的例文给学生讲解，让学生在具体的写作指导中找到差距，克服不足。     

骨干教师校本培训模式的探究

课程改革将教师的专业发展提到前所未有的高度 ,教师的培训、学习显得比任何时候都更加重要。校本培训顺应了骨干教师继续教育的宗旨 ,解决教师培训中的种种弊端 ,具有重要的现实意义 ,因此 ,我校开始了校本培训的研究。在对骨干教师的校本培训研究中 ,我们形成了“二型七环”的骨干教师校本培训模式 ,这种模式为骨干教师持续的专业发展 ,拓展于广阔的空间 ,提高了骨干教师教育教学质量 ,并带动了教师群体素质的提高。     

浙西词人吴陈琰考议

浙西词人吴陈琰为“浙西前驱”曹溶的学生,于康熙二十年同淄川名宦唐梦赉相唱和,留下一百三十多首词,并与其他浙西词人有着广泛的交游。吴词境界阔大、慷慨俊爽,与其师曹溶一脉相承,却与典型的浙西词风迥不相侔。吴陈琰作词之时正是浙西词派发展壮大之际,他的创作从一个侧面展示了浙西词人从一个地理意义上的创作群体走向文学意义上的流派之经过。     

An Examination of the Clinical Preparation of School Counselors

Clinical training is considered the capstone experience (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, 2001) for preservice counselors. This exploratory study examined pedagogical practice for clinical preparation in a purposeful sample of 59 school counseling internship syllabi. A qualitative analysis revealed wide diversity in content regarding supervision, student assignments, and, in particular, on‐site requirements.     

Asian Pacific Americans and Critical Race Theory: An Examination of School Racial Climate

We attempt to answer where the social justice is in service-learning by probing what it is, how it looks in the process of being institutionalized at a Jesuit university, and why it is important. We develop themes about institutionalizing service-learning from a social justice perspective. Our themes were developed through an analysis of service-learning research focused on institutionalization and social justice, and a case study of a Jesuit university attempting to institutionalize it, including five faculty action research service-learning projects. From these themes, we share lessons that we learned from this experience.     

Segregation,Desegregation, Segregation: Charter School Options as a Return to Separate and Unequal Schools for Urban Families

The controversial glory of the Brown decisions and the retraction of court-ordered reforms represent the limited gains of racial justice in education and the protection of white privilege through law and policy. The return to segregation, as propagated through the rise of racially and economically segregated charter schools, exhibits the circuitous nature of law and education policy, represents a return to unequal schooling, and reveals the enduring and meaningful connections between race, law, and education. Using the lens of critical race theory, this paper focuses on law as an instrument of racial justice and oppression in education during the era of school desegregation and the inevitable return to separate and unequal schools for African American students through new education policies that promote the proliferation of charter schools in large urban school districts.

Social Competence and Oral Language Development for Young Children of Latino Immigrants

Research Findings: In this study we analyze how parent and teacher ratings of young Latino children’s social competencies in rural California are associated with children’s oral language development. We find (a) that there is considerable incongruence between parent and teacher ratings of child social competence, (b) that both parent and teacher ratings account for meaningful variation in children’s oral language development, and (c) that incongruence between parent and teacher ratings is associated with oral language above and beyond the effects of parent and teacher ratings alone. Practice or Policy: Young Latino children’s social competencies contribute to their oral language development. These competencies represent an important, though to date underutilized, asset for building stronger academic/language functioning. Part of the paradoxical development of Latino children (i.e., strong social though weak academic/language competence) could be attributable to cultural differences that underlie teacher and parent perceptions of social competence. Teachers of young Latino children should (a) be aware of the cultural nature of social competence and (b) explore culturally responsive ways of interacting in classrooms to build stronger oral language functioning.     

Health and Medical Care among the Children of Immigrants

Using data spanning 1996–2009 from multiple panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation, this study investigates children’s (average age 8.5 years) physical health, dental visits, and doctor contact among low‐income children (n = 46,148) in immigrant versus native households. Immigrant households are further distinguished by household citizenship and immigration status. The findings show that children residing in households with non‐naturalized citizen parents, particularly those with a nonpermanent resident parent, experience worse health and less access to care even when controlling for important demographic, socioeconomic, and health insurance variables.     

School and Residential Segregation in School Districts with Voluntary Integration Policies

ABSTRACT

Since the Supreme Court’s 2007 Parents Involved decision, school districts have been pursuing integration in more legally and politically charged environments. The retreat of the federal government in the racial integration of schools is well documented, but less understood is what local school districts are doing to fill that void. This study documents the districts in the United States that are engaged in voluntary integration. We measure the racial and income segregation in these districts at the school level from 2000 to 2015, examining the relationship between integration methods and levels of segregation. We also measure block group-level segregation in these school districts during this time period to better understand residential patterns of segregation within the districts and contextualize school-level trends.     

School Choice in Sweden: Effects on Student Performance,School Costs,and Segregation

This article presents empirical analyses of the effects of independent schools in Sweden. The most important result is that the impact—both the positive and the negative—is relatively marginal. This said, there are now a number of studies that show that when independent schools are established the pupils in municipal schools perform better. Municipal school costs will, however, tend to rise marginally. The effects on school segregation are complex, but the tentative overall result is that independent schools may have added somewhat to the much more significant effect of increasing residential segregation.
