College librarians express concern over incoming students' information literacy skills and lack of skills preparing them for college-level research. However, it is unclear whether information literacy skills are not being taught at the high school level, whether they are not being retained or transferred as students move on to college, or whether there is a disconnect between the skills taught in high school and those expected of incoming college students. This study explores these questions through a set of parallel surveys sent to a national sample of high school and college librarians. Findings suggest that high school and college librarians agree on the importance of most skills though they vary in their emphasis on their importance, and that information literacy skills are being taught in high school but do not seem to transfer to college. The paper concludes with suggestions for increased communication and collaboration to bridge the high school to college transition.  相似文献

The library has experienced many conversations with colleagues at the college in different departments lately related to the library tools and services it offers. Some of these conversations have included senior administrators, who have at some point directly supervised the library. In order for senior administrators to advocate for the library, librarians must educate them on the tools and services the library offers to its customers. Springshare’s LibApps is one such tool that has been integral to library operations. In the few years since the library has subscribed to Springshare’s LibApps’ suite of tools, Office of Institutional Research & Training (OIRT) has successfully utilized this library-specific tool, which has justified the annual renewal of this software tool by senior administration. For more departments at the college to adopt these tools and integrate them into their day-to-day tasks, librarians must educate customers (student, staff, and faculty) as well as administration about this and other library-specific tools. Since Springshare markets to and for librarians and as more librarians write about how this tool can be used for a variety of different applications, then other departments college-wide will become aware of and then adopt Springshare’s LibApps’ suite of tools.  相似文献

In the 2011–2012 school year, the instruction librarians at Augustana College, Illinois, changed their assessment approach in the college's required first-year sequence to focus on higher-level information literacy concepts. The librarians replaced a quantitative assessment instrument with performance assessments, which they integrated into their first-year library sessions. Although the sequence is taught by many faculty with diverse assignments, these new assessments could be applied organically across sections yet provide generalizable results. This case study describes that assessment project and its initial findings, analyzes the project's implications, and suggests how other college libraries might adopt similar qualitative assessments.  相似文献

This paper is based on a study carried out in Botswana. The study examined the trend of allocations of materials budgets in Botswana colleges of education libraries from 2000 to 2004. Preliminary investigations had revealed that the information materials in the libraries appeared inadequate for the library clients. With the senior librarians in the six colleges forming the target group, a 21-item questionnaire was administered to the group. It was noted that the college libraries received annual budgetary allocations ranging between 8 and 11% of the total budgets of the colleges and, in all cases, the libraries spent over 60% of the materials budget on monographs and between 10 and 40% on printed journals. The college librarians were not encouraged to budget and they appeared ill-equipped to allocate materials funds. The study concludes that the college authorities and the Department of Teacher Training and Development need to provide support for the college librarians to enable them improve on their allocation activities. Library schools also have a major role to play in equipping librarians with skills of managing materials budgets.  相似文献

This article shares the perspectives of two former high school and middle school librarians who moved into academic libraries. The move from the K–12 sector to higher education offered them unique insights into working with first-year students as they started their college careers. Existing literature discusses the importance of collaboration between high school and academic librarians. The authors of this article have firsthand experience of how students work in the middle and high school realm, and they demonstrate how to apply that knowledge and experience with college students.  相似文献

Federal Regulations published in 1988 require colleges to demonstrate the difference they have made to students. The accrediting agencies such as the Middle States Association have combined frameworks for outcomes assessment with the long established requirement that college students demonstrate the ability to retrieve and use information. Hudson Valley Community College librarians work with the faculty in a liaison program to shape the collections, library use and student success. As faculty the librarians serve on college committees; at the state level the library subscribes to the SUNYLA student library competencies statement. All this is drawn on as librarians collaborate with faculty on college and departmental accreditation self study and visits. As the focus shifts from accreditation to assessment, librarians undertaking self-study must decide who will use the information and what library roles must be justified, Illustrations include an accreditation visit checklist, the Curriculum Committee LRC fact sheet and the SUNYLA Recommended Library Skills and Competencies for Graduates of Community Colleges.  相似文献

Objective:The primary objective of this study was to determine how community college health sciences librarians perceive their proficiencies in the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary for the practice of a health information professional as defined by the Medical Library Association (MLA) Competencies for Lifelong Learning and Professional Success. A secondary objective was to determine their current level of engagement with the professional community and identify barriers to further professional development.Methods:A survey was posted to various email discussion lists, and volunteer follow-up interviews were conducted.Results:The survey was completed by seventy-five community college health sciences librarians, and seven follow-up interviews were performed. Survey results indicated that community college health sciences librarians perceived themselves as having intermediate or advanced intermediate proficiency in the six MLA competencies. Survey and interview results indicated that community college health sciences librarians were engaged with the profession and faced the same barriers to continued professional development and continued education as other academic librarians.Conclusion:The results affirm that community college librarians who are responsible for collections and services in the health sciences meet the MLA competencies, which fills a gap in the literature regarding how these librarians develop professional competencies and are involved in professional associations. The results suggest that community college librarians can improve their skill levels by continuing their education and following trends in the literature.  相似文献

In 2013, the librarians at a small academic health sciences library reevaluated their mission, vision, and strategic plan to expand their roles. The school was transitioning to a new pedagogical culture and a new building designed to emphasize interprofessional education and active learning methodologies. Subsequent efforts to implement the new strategic plan resulted in the librarians joining curriculum committees and other institutional initiatives, such as an Active Learning Task Force, and participating in faculty development workshops. This participation has increased visibility and led to new roles and opportunities for librarians.  相似文献

A regular, systematic collection assessment program is essential to a well-managed collection development operation. But too often librarians lack the knowledge and skills to plan and conduct such assessments. To help librarians develop their professional competence in collection evaluation, this article rccommends a collection assessment training manual. Such a manual should provide not only the practical techniques and procedures necessary to conduct, analyze, and report the assessment activities and results, but also the broader rationale needed to develop tailor-made evaluation programs to meet a variety of assessment objectives. The article also recommends and discusses a number of collection-centered and client- centered measurement techniques that should be included in the manual as well as planning and reporting considerations and suggestions for format, etc. Developing an assessment manual requires considerable effort, but the effort is well invested when the results are better collection development decisions.  相似文献

After Hurricane Katrina struck, many friends, fellow librarians at all levels, alumni, and others came to help in our rebuilding efforts at Benjamin Franklin High School. I developed an action plan that covers stages in the rebuilding process. It is extremely important that a librarian remain focused and flexible in all rebuilding efforts. The plan, procedures, process, needs assessment, and current educational, library, and technological trends are important to successfully rebuild a library. Summary

Academic librarians, eager to participate in the education of college students, have been researching library anxiety, students' aversion to asking questions, and other problems with interactions between students and library staff for decades. Misconceptions about librarians' professional status, teaching roles, knowledge and expertise, and attitudes toward students are often proposed as causes of dysfunctional interactions and as reasons why some students don't ask questions. It is important for students to know that librarians are willing and able to help, so that they feel free to ask questions that will help them advance their education. This study reports the findings of a survey of 48 undergraduate students regarding their perceptions of academic librarians, and discusses ideas for addressing existing misconceptions.  相似文献

本文基于阅读疗法在大学生心理健康教育中的实践研究效果,提出了通过阅读疗法对高校图书馆员健康人格进行塑造与培养的观点,以期通过促进馆员人格健全,提升馆员素质,从而提高阅读疗法的服务水平。笔者认为,可通过成立面向高校图书馆员的阅读疗法工作组、开辟高校图书馆员阅读空间、精选高校图书馆员阅读治疗书单、建立健全评价机制、畅通馆员沟通渠道等途径对馆员健康人格进行培养,进而促进高校图书馆的健康发展。  相似文献

Funded in part by a Chancellor's Faculty Outreach Grant, a project team of University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) instruction librarians developed information literacy workshops for local high school teachers and librarians. They introduced teachers to information literacy standards, provided technology training, and presented strategies and activities for incorporating critical thinking into the research process. The project team also worked with teachers to create lesson plans that incorporated these methods into their own curriculum. By “training the trainers,” the ultimate goal was to enhance the research skills of students to help them perform better in high school and thereby preparing them for a successful transition to college.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对当前高校图书馆学科馆员人力资源缺乏,难以在院系广泛开展“嵌入科研,深入课题”的学科服务困境,探索利用研究生(博士、硕士)兼职参与学科服务,协助或替代学科馆员到院系开展学科服务的新模式。[方法/过程] 以华南农业大学图书馆学科服务实践为例,介绍针对兼职学科馆员的队伍建设、管理模式,探讨其在院系进行学科服务的实践效果。[结果/结论] 结果表明,研究生兼职参与学科服务,可实现图书馆资源宣传和信息专题培训的大范围“入院(学院)、进室(实验室)、到组(课题组)”,针对院系科研人员的信息服务实现了研究生对导师(或课题组)个性化的贴身服务。基于兼职学科馆员的学科服务新模式改变了单靠图书馆力量开展学科服务的现状,缓解了图书馆有限的人力资源在院系广泛开展深度学科服务举步维艰的困境,为同类图书馆进一步开展广泛、深入的学科服务提供了一个高素质人力资源利用的新思路。  相似文献
