Libraries and Faculty Collaboration: Four Digital Scholarship Examples

ABSTRACT

About twenty years ago, the Internet began to change the way people create, access, publish, and share information. The impact of this information revolution has been felt in every industry. For instance, the Internet has enabled new models in the publishing sector, which has subsequently impacted education and changed the landscape of teaching and learning. About a decade ago, the introduction of new buzzwords such as open access, electronic publishing, digital humanities, and digital scholarship continued to challenge the scholarly production and dissemination of knowledge. Undoubtedly, these changes also created new opportunities for collaboration among multidisciplinary groups including researchers, scholars, students, technologists, librarians, and others. In this article, the author discusses four successful faculty-driven digital scholarship projects that his library system has supported in the last two years. His team's work serves as an example of how academic libraries and centers for digital scholarship at undergraduate institutions can support digital humanities and digital scholarship initiatives. Additionally, the case examples can contribute to the ongoing discussion of new roles for librarians and technologists in working with scholars and students to gain the skills necessary to implement digital scholarship projects.     

The Digital Humanities Summer Scholarship: A model for library-led undergraduate digital scholarship

ABSTRACT

The article offers a model for library-centered undergraduate engagement with digital scholarship based on two years of successful implementation at Lafayette College. Librarians designed a competitive six-week summer internship where undergraduate students built their own digital research projects. Through their original projects, students practiced traditional research methods and simultaneously explored subfields of digital scholarship. The article's topics include the relationship between digital scholarship and information literacy, the library's role in facilitating digital scholarship, and the internship's design and execution. The article also includes reflections and recommendations for sustainable implementation.

数字学术近年来成为图书馆学术热点之一,受到国内外高校图书馆的普遍关注。文章对印第安纳大学伯明顿分校图书馆的数字学术服务分别从数据服务、数字保存服务、数字馆藏服务、学术出版服务和共享数字化实验室等进行深入研究,并对我国高校图书馆数字学术服务建设提出了相应的建议。     

新形势下数字图书馆馆员素养的塑造

当今新形势客观要求图书馆员与时俱进,加强培养信息观念和信息意识,不断提高信息处理的技术能力,熟谙信息服务岗位所需的专业学科知识,努力把自己塑造成适应新时代要求的数字图书馆馆员。从这个意义上讲,探讨新形势下数字图书馆馆员素养的塑造,有着重要的现实意义。     

美国大学图书馆数字学术服务调查研究

大学图书馆是美国数字学术服务的主力军之一。本文采用网络调研与内容分析相结合方法,以CenterNet8所图书馆独立承办的数字学术中心为样本,从中心概况、组织架构、人员配置、空间服务、学术支持5方面展开调研分析,以了解美国大学图书馆参与数字学术服务的具体情况,并指出数字学术服务面临的挑战。在此基础上,本文重点从数字学术服务目标制定、发展模式、实施路径、馆员技能交叉培训4个方面进行思考,为切实推动我国高校图书馆数字学术服务提供有益的启发。     

Communicating New Library Roles to Enable Digital Scholarship: A Review Article

ABSTRACT

Academic libraries enable a wide range of digital scholarship activities, increasingly as a partner rather than as a service provider. Communicating that shift in role is challenging, not least as digital scholarship is a new field with many players whose activities on campus can be disjointed. The library's actual and potential contributions need to be broadcast to a diverse range of internal and external constituencies, primarily academic staff, university management, library colleagues and related project teams, often with different perspectives. Libraries have significant contributions to offer and a focused communications strategy is needed to embed libraries in digital scholarship and to create new perceptions of their role as enabling partners.     

The California Digital Library and the eScholarship Program

Summary

The eScholarship program was launched in 2000 to foster facultyled innovation in scholarly publishing. An initiative of the University of California (UC) and a program of the California Digital Library, the eScholarship program has stimulated significant interest in its short life. Its modest but visible accomplishments garner praise from many quarters, within and beyond the University of California. In perhaps the best indication of its timeliness and momentum, there are more proposals submitted to eScholarship today than the CDL can manage. This early success is due in part to the sheer power of an idea whose time has come, but also to the unique approach on which CDL was founded and the eScholarship initiative was first launched.rved.]     

美国数字素养教育现状及启示

[目的/意义]通过对美国数字素养发展现状的梳理,引发对我国数字素养教育的思考,并提出相应的对策和建议。[方法/过程]针对美国的数字素养网站、教育资源、政府法案以及行业项目进行全面阐述,美国的数字素养教育在政府部门的大力支持、行业协会制定行动计划、各类图书馆各司其职的情况下,呈现出社会化、全民化的特点;其教育手段数字化、公开化同时强调公平获取、隐私保护和数据安全。[结果/结论]提出我国教育部门、图书馆界应紧跟互联网行业飞速发展的脚步,制定数字素养教育框架、标准与长远的行动计划,呼吁政府的支持,以求在数字素养教育中担当关键角色,全面推进公民的数字素养。

The future of research libraries will be shaped by broader developments at research universities in the areas of creating, sharing, disseminating, and curating knowledge. Universities face fundamental policy choices in all of these areas that have been recast by developments in information technology. This article discusses trends in digital scholarship practices across the humanities, science, and social science disciplines and examines implications for academic institutions and their research libraries as a means of framing these policy choices.

美国部分大学图书馆的数字学术支持考察与启示

[目的/意义] 研究美国部分大学图书馆的数字学术支持现状,为国内大学图书馆开展数字学术支持提供参考和借鉴。[方法/过程] 采用典型案例分析法,对美国14所大学图书馆的数字学术支持情况进行考察,分析数字学术的概念、数字学术支持机构设置、数字学术支持的内容与形式等。[结果/结论] 美国大学图书馆在明确数字学术概念基础上,设立数字学术支持机构,以数字资源建设、数字项目建设及研究、数据策展、数字出版、数字人文项目研究等为数字学术支持核心内容,提供形式多样的数字学术支持。我国大学图书馆应设立数字学术支持机构,重视数字学术支持团队建设,重视图书馆数字学术空间建设,创新以数字学术为核心的图书馆服务。     

万华镜里的自画像:关于中国人文学者数字学术认知与需求的质性研究

[目的/意义]从人文学者的角度出发,探讨人文学者如何看待数字人文,他们又如何被数字人文的浪潮所影响。通过对人文学者数字学术认知与数字学术需求的考察,为数字人文服务和系统设计奠定基础。[方法/过程]采用质性研究方法,对文学、历史、哲学和艺术4个领域展开比较研究,并以访谈素材进行饱和度检验,构建起"认知-预判-担忧-需求与应对"的质性主线。[结果/结论]研究发现,不同领域人文学者对数字学术的认知并不完全相同,但对其影响的预判也存在共性之处,他们普遍认同数字化对人文的研究素材、研究方法、知识传播和研究问题都会产生一定影响;面对数字化浪潮,人文学者的担忧主要包括对数字学术研究深度的担忧、对学科主体地位的担忧和对技术环境下学术伦理问题的担忧;最后,人文学者在自身能力提升、数据、技术、科研评价体系方面存在许多需求,其中对"基础设施"和"数字项目"的需求最为迫切。     

An On-Demand and Cloud-Based Digital Scholarship Applications Dashboard

Building on the findings of a 2013 NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up funded project, in early 2016 we began working on an IMLS Sparks! funded project: Digital Scholarship Applications Dashboard. The project is a collaborative initiative between University IT and the Library's Center for Digital Scholarship. We are currently evaluating an efficient and user-friendly dashboard solution that will allow faculty and student to easily choose, configure, deploy, and evaluate any of a set of common web applications in a shared and virtual hosting environment. The service is similar to those offered by commercial hosting providers for deployment of popular web applications, but our Scholars Dashboard service will focus on tools more relevant to digital scholarship and digital humanities. The prototype leverages OpenNebula, an open source cloud-computing platform for managing distributed data center environments, and Amazon Web Services for deploying virtual machines. In this article, we will describe the work we have done in the last year and further discuss the role of digital scholarship teams within academic libraries in providing cloud-based infrastructure for digital scholarship and research.

数字素养是数字时代的必备技能。为帮助世界各国加强数字素养教育质量监测,有效利用研究成果改进学习并缩减数字鸿沟,联合国教科文组织研制了数字素养全球框架。系统分析数字素养全球框架的研制动因、研制过程、内容及特点并总结相关启示,可以为我国数字素养研究与实践提供参考。面对数字化的持续影响,我国的数字素养研究应因地制宜,开发本土化数字素养框架,采用理论与实证并重的研究范式,推动企业深度参与数字素养研究,采取面向未来能力需求的数字素养提升策略。     

国外高校数字素养教育实践及其启示

［目的/意义］通过对国外高校数字素养教育实践的分析梳理,总结其对我国高校数字素养教育的启示和建议,以期能够为我国高校数字素养教育提供一定的参考。［方法/过程］通过文献调研和网络调查的方法,对国外高校数字素养教育情况进行调查。［结果/结论］国外高校数字素养教育受到各国政府和行业组织的高度重视和大力支持,已形成体系并获得一定的成果。借鉴国外的经验,我国政府部门应当高度重视并支持数字素养教育的开展;我国高校在数字素养教育中应当构建数字素养标准框架以指导数字素养教育的开展;以高校图书馆为主要教育阵地,形成多部门协作的教育模式;丰富教育模式,促进学生在实践中提升数字素养。     

Reviewing Digital Scholarship: The Need for Discipline-Based Peer Review

ABSTRACT

Digital scholarship connects scholarly research to students and the public in nontraditional ways. Authors present research in a digital form, which may include links to primary source material and teaching guides. In this format, design and accessibility are important, and, unfortunately, those quick to dismiss all digital work as teaching or outreach can overlook the research element. The confusion over what digital scholarship is and how to evaluate it can affect promotion and tenure decisions in academic institutions. This article will examine issues surrounding the availability of peer review for digital scholarship, especially in the field of American history. Mechanisms for peer review must be created by scholarly associations and applied to digital scholarship to ensure this form of scholarship is acknowledged and rewarded.     

Opportunities beyond Electronic Resource Management: An Extension of the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians to Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications

This article will provide an overview of current topics in Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications (DS/SC) and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill set of electronic resources librarians. Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians and those needed for success in DS/SC will form the basis of the author’s recommendations for involvement in these new areas.     

数字参考服务中的信息素养分析

文章以信息素养标准和研究模型为基础，针对数字参考服务的特点，探讨了信息素养与数字参考服务的关系，提出了一个适用于数字参考服务信息素养分析的模型，并结合实例对该模型的应用做了说明。     

从数字出版到数字图书馆的有效对接

本文针对当前数字出版与数字图书馆在版权保护、使用范围、利益分成等方面存在的"冲突"而展开,通过寻找数字出版与数字图书馆合理对接的契合点,指出数字出版与数字图书馆在需求互动的链条上是密不可分的关系,如果解决了政策和技术等方面的问题,利用数字文档就可以将二者有效地链接起来。对此,笔者提出的解决方案是,在政策和制度层面要合理解决数字版权保护的立法问题、数字文献资源的网络传播保护问题、数字化出版物的市场规范问题。在技术方法层面需要解决数字文档格式的统一问题、从排版文件到阅读文档的贯通问题、数字版权技术应用及推广问题等。
