The ABCs of private equity and venture capital data and information

ABSTRACT

In June 2017, the Business Reference & Services Section of the Reference & User Services Association organized and hosted an event known as the Publishers' Forum during the annual American Library Association Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The Publishers' Forum is a professional development event that brings together business librarians and publishers of business information to engage in a discussion about business information products. The theme of the 2017 Publishers' Forum was private equity and venture capital data and information, and three different publishers were invited to speak and showcase their information products. This article will provide an overview of the Publishers' Forum, discuss the selection of private equity and venture capital as the theme, and highlight the importance of private equity and venture capital to business librarianship. Finally, this article will include a discussion of each of the publishers who presented at the Publishers' Forum and the information products they showcased.     

Venturing forth: Venture capital and private equity information in academic business libraries

ABSTRACT

Due to limited disclosure requirements, obtaining private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) information presents challenges to academic researchers. However, the universe of commercially available resources that focus on private equity and venture capital has increased substantially over the past decade. This article examines recent academic business literature to evaluate whether resources from newer providers in this subject area (CB Insights, PitchBook, Preqin, PrivCo) are gaining traction among academic researchers. It also matches the resources that researchers are citing to library holdings in an effort to measure library support for PE/VC research. The results indicate that data from traditional providers (Dow Jones, S&P Capital IQ, Thomson Reuters) continues to be heavily used and that libraries are providing moderate support for PE/VC research.     

Special issue on Theory and Media Economics

This issue of The Journal of Media Economics is devoted to a symposium on theory and media economics research. Media economics has been criticized by some in communications disciplines as being a field of research that is a theoretical in nature. As readers will discover, the articles in this issue of the journal invalidate the criticism.     

Reintroducing taboo topics: Antecedents and consequences of putting topics back on the table

Relational partners often experience intractable disagreements. When confronting such arguments, they sometimes declare the topic taboo and thereby remove it from further discussion. However, research does not inform as to whether or how such topics can be reintroduced for discussion. We argued that topics are most likely to be reintroduced when the conditions that led to their banishment are no longer relevant. We also anticipated that reintroducing the topic through a planned interaction rather than an unplanned conversation or event would be more common when the topic concerned some aspect of the relationship. However, a planned interaction would be less likely when the topic focused on extra‐relational activities, prior relationships, or attitudinal differences between partners. We also posited that reinstating the topic would create more positive reactions when the reason for reintroduction flowed from changed conditions and was planned than when not. A survey of individuals involved in dating relationships indicates that most could report topics that were once taboo and then reinstated. Our hypotheses were generally supported. Future directions for research are discussed.

通过分析目前我国科技期刊为获得较高的总被引频次和影响因子以争取进入国际著名检索系统,在选题组稿中重视热点课题、忽视冷点课题这一实际情况,阐述科学研究中的热点课题和冷点课题之间的辩证关系,指出科技期刊在选题组稿中,不但要跟踪和报道热点研究课题的成果,而且应该注意发现冷点研究领域中的原创性成果,并给予积极报道.     

社会资本与科技期刊

将近年来兴起的社会资本的概念引进到科技期刊的办刊实践中,并研究科技期刊的社会属性以及社会资本对科技期刊的影响。研究表明：社会资本普遍存在于科技期刊之中,并对科技期刊的发展具有积极的影响和消极的影响。科技期刊人应充分利用社会资本对科技期刊的促进作用,并消除社会资本的不利影响,合力办好科技期刊。     

特色文献资源与特色服务

介绍了图书馆特色文献资源的建设与图书馆的各种特色服务 ,指出这一工作的开展为图书馆事业的发展带来新的生机。

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a halo effect in issue management: public response to negative news about pro-social local private companies

This study investigates the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate nationality on public reactions to negative news about corporations. To explain how CSR activity works as a buffer for a negative issue of an organization, we propose a halo effect theory. This study conducted an experiment using a 2 (CSR activity vs. no CSR activity) x 2 (domestic company vs. foreign company) between-subject design. For this experiment, we developed a negative news story about a fictitious Asian local company. The dependent variable was whether individuals showed willingness to take actions against this company. We found that both CRS activities and corporation nationality have the main effects on individuals' willingness to take an action against the local company. CSR activities and the company's national identity (being domestic) were significant positive factors in attenuating participants' intention to take action against the local company. Further, there was a significant interaction effect of CSR activity and the company's nationality on individuals' willingness to take action against the company: CSR activity had a greater positive impact on soothing the public's negative reactions when the local company was identified as foreign rather than domestic. The results were discussed as a halo effect of CSR activities.     

Integrative model for discovering linked topics in science and technology

Linked topics in science and technology (LTSTs) can provide new avenues for technological innovation and are a key step in the transition from basic to applied research. This paper proposes a science and technology semantic linkage integration model for discovering LTSTs. Particularly, the integrative model fuses the term co-occurrence networks of basic and applied research, which expands the completeness of topic networks by enhancing the semantic characteristics of these networks. It is found that link prediction can further reinforce the semantic association of topic terms in networks between basic and applied topics. Simple fusion explicitly linked the topic terms, which can be used as automatic seed marking for subsequent link prediction to identify implicit linking of topic terms. Furthermore, an application to the gene-engineered vaccines field depicted that newly predicted implicit relations can effectively identify LTSTs. The results also show that implicit semantic recognition of LTSTs can be enhanced through simple fusion, while the recognition of LTST can be improved through link prediction. Therefore, the proposed model can assist experts to identify LTSTs that cannot be recognized through simple fusion.
