Supporting Communication in a Collaborative Discovery Learning Environment: the Effect of Instruction

We present a study on the effect of instruction on collaboration in a collaborative discovery learning environment. The instruction we used, called RIDE, is built upon four principles identified in the literature on collaborative processes: Respect, Intelligent collaboration, Deciding together, and Encouraging. In an experimental study, a group of learners (ages 15–17) receiving this instruction was compared to a control group. The learners worked in dyads on separate computers in a shared discovery learning environment in the physics domain of collisions, communicating through a chat channel. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the logged actions in the learning environment and the chat protocols showed that the RIDE instruction can lead to more constructive communication, and improved discovery learning activities, as expected, although no direct effect on discovery learning results was found. This study shows the benefits of providing instruction on effective communication and the learning process in a collaborative discovery learning situation.     

Collaborative Inquiry and Vertical Team Teaching: Implications for Literacy Instruction

The purpose of this collective case study was to explore the resultant effects of vertical team teaching and collaborative inquiry on elementary (Grade 8) and secondary (Grade 9) educators' literacy instructional and assessment practices. Key elements of the program included collaborative inquiry and vertical team teaching. The findings of this case study provide professional learning suggestions for teachers, administrators, consultants, support staff, and district and state administrators that aim to improve future transition programs and literacy supports.

Integrating Effective Teaching Literature With Literature on Instruction in the Natural Environment

Culturally diverse students are receiving much deserved attention by educators of the gifted. Historically, the field has been unable to answer all concerns about this "minority within the gifted minority"; however, research and census data indicate that diversity has become a priority in educational settings. Understanding the meaning of cultural diversity and accepting new paradigms for developing organizational and instructional strategies are important variables that lead to success in meeting the needs of this population. Research has shown that conceptual and attitudinal changes toward the recognition of hidden abilities often overlooked in culturally diverse groups have enriched successful programs for the gifted. Recommendations for the involvement of administrators, teachers, parents, and the community in the planning process for inclusion of culturally diverse students in programs for the gifted provide a roadmap for this complex process.     

Collaborative Online Teamwork: Exploring Students' Satisfaction and Attitudes with Google Hangouts as a Supplementary Communication Tool

This study examined differences in student satisfaction and perceptions of online teamwork in two cohorts of an undergraduate educational technology course: one delivered fully asynchronously and the other incorporating synchronous Google Hangouts sessions in student online teamwork. Participants included 50 undergraduate students at a large university in the northeastern United States. Results indicated that the cohort that used synchronous Google Hangouts as a tool supplementary to the asynchronous communication components such as discussion boards and e-mails had a higher level of satisfaction with online teamwork when compared with the cohort that used only asynchronous communication tools. In addition, students reported that synchronous communication using Google Hangouts helped them develop a sense of community. Implications of the results are discussed.     

Collaborative Learning in a Web-mediated Environment: A study of communicative practices

New opportunities for conceptualising, designing and facilitating collaborative learning are rapidly expanding with the technological innovations and proliferation of web-mediated learning and teaching. By enabling social interactions via an electronic medium, web technologies are not only expanding but also transforming the social interaction space of collaborative learning. This paper explores collaborative learning viewed from these social interaction processes. More specifically, the paper applies a Communicative Model of Collaborative Learning to make sense of students' interactions in a management subject taught in a combined face-to-face and web-mediated mode. This model provides a methodological instrument for the analysis of communicative practices in concrete learning processes. By analysing the empirical data from linguistic interactions among students, the paper investigates not only what these interactions mean but also what they produce in a particular learning situation and how they affect learning. In particular, the paper investigates processes of knowledge co-creation that are integral to the development of capabilities for life-long learning.

Sickle Cell Counselor: A Prototype Goal-Based Scenario for Instruction in a Museum Environment

Goal-Based Scenarios (GBSs) provide a framework for the design of instruction—a framework in which the student plays a role within a simulation, acquiring knowledge and skills in the process of pursuing a meaningful goal within the simulation context. Sickle Cell Counselor, a computer program designed to teach museum visitors about sickle cell disease by placing them in the role of a genetic counselor, is the first step in our development of GBSs. While using Sickle Cell Counselor, a museum visitor advises couples about the difficult decision of whether or not to have children when there is a substantial genetic risk of the disease. To carry out this task, the visitor can perform simulated laboratory tests and ask questions of several experts via interactive video. In this article, we describe Sickle Cell Counselor in terms of the GBS framework, present a detailed example of interaction with the system, and discuss the results of three evaluation studies.     

Collaborative,Formative Evaluation in Teaching Practice: a road to reflectivity

This paper starts from the assumption that teaching is more than the simple application of the results of research conducted by others. The goal of practicum is to promote a reflective attitude in education, leading the student teacher all along his/her complete training. Formative evaluation as a dynamic process is a way of reflecting during action, facilitating professional development of teachers. That is why it should be integrated into the curriculum of teaching practice.

Metacognitive Instruction: Trainers Teaching Thinking Skills

Humans have the ability to monitor and control their conscious cognitive processes. This ability, called metacognition, implies that people can learn to optimize their cognitive processes. Recent research in metacognition provides new ways of accelerating learning and skill transfer through an improvement in the decision-making, problem solving, and attentional skills of trainees. This paper provides a critical review of recent research in metacognition and presents recommendations for assessing and facilitating metacognitive skills in trainees, using cognitive-based techniques for task analysis and instructional design.
