On Montrose’s Perception of New Historicism

Louis Adrian Montrose has addressed literary,historical,and theoretical topics and issues concerned with New Historicism.He elegantly demonstrated how language and literary imagination shape cultural value;belief,and understanding;social distinction and interaction;and political control and contestation,thus significantly shaped contemporary studies of poetics and politics of culture.He refuted the oversimplified polarization of language and society of J.Hillis Miller and Edward Pechter’s misunderstandings about "New Historicism" and stated his own understanding and expectations of New Historicism.From a detailed analysis of his ideas,the author points out the weakness in his arguments and advises researchers in this field to dialectically view the school of New Historicism.

On the Relationship between the Original and the Translated Version——The Interpretation of Benjamin's Three Metaphors

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning,yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original,but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later,based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary,just like the fragments of a vessel,responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.     

The New Curriculum for the Teaching of English——With Which Dialectical Knowledge in Education Is Raised

The paper ,with a theory of Action Research and especially dialectical knowledge, gives a brief analysis and disussion of the New English Standard Syllabus(aim called the New Curriculum) and also points out the difference between the New Curriculum and the traditional syllabus of the basic English course. It is also theoretically and practically designed with some excellent suggestions on how to study the New Curriculum and make good use of English teaching.

On the Cultural Comparison between Chinese and English——The Analogy of Animal Words

Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate.With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication,cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions,historical developments,traditional customs,mythology and fables,etc.So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively,but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English.Thus,through illustration,classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words,the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese.What’s more,the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.

An Interpretation of The Kite Runner from the Perspective of Diasporic Theory——On the Lack and Pursuit of Cultural Identity

The Kite Runner was the first English novel created by an Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini.This novel has received widespread popularity since its publication in 2003,and it was translated into 42 languages.This novel tells a story of an Afghan boy Amir's betrayal on friendship and his selfredemption.It not only expresses accusation against the war,but also reflects the racial and religious issues in Afghanistan.From the perspective of diaspora,this dissertation briefly introduces diasporic theory of Homi Bhabha and Said.As a post colonial writer,Khaled Hosseini has a dual identity.Therefore,this thesis studies The Kite Runner from the angle of cultural identity in order to put forward more research methods and deepen the understanding of post colonial writers and works.     

Where Are the Global Rankings Leading Us? An Analysis of Recent Methodological Changes and New Developments

This article is based on the analysis of the changes in global university rankings and the new ‘products’ based on rankings data in the period since mid-2011. It is a summary and continuation of the European University Association (EUA)-commissioned report ‘Global University Rankings Their Impact, Report II’ which was launched in April 2013. It covers the changes in the ranking methodologies which have been the most visible in the CWTS Leiden Ranking and Webometrics and which have replaced some indicators with newly designed ones. Changes have been made in other rankings as well, but they are less visible. A new U21 ranking was launched in 2012. It is an attempt to rank national higher education systems rather than individual universities. New rankings by conventional ranking providers have demonstrated that in reputation rankings or reputation indicators the scores drop even more sharply than in the most élitist rankings and therefore can be used for even narrower groups of universities. Several ranking providers have started their own data collections and combine ranking data with the data from the newly established data collections and use them for several multi-indicator classifications or profiling tools. QS has been most productive and has added not only classification and profiling tools, but has also launched a ranking of student cities, and ‘stars’ that universities can obtain. Generally, the rankings’ impact is growing. Let us see where it will bring us. At the same time, some rankings providers have changed language and explain the biases, flaws and misunderstandings created through misuse of rankings or using ranking indicators without proper knowledge.
