‘Challenge and support’: the role of the critical friend in continuing professional development

Abstract

In this paper, the writer, a senior teacher in a comprehensive school, describes his role as a critical friend to two teachers who were undertaking self‐initiated action research projects as part of a school‐based, award‐bearing curriculum development scheme offered in conjunction with the local higher education institute (HEI). He concludes that such a relationship, in providing both challenge and support for colleagues who are attempting to improve practice, is a powerful vehicle for the professional development of teachers and has a positive impact on whole‐school development.

Developing Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Teaching a New Topic: More Than Teaching Experience and Subject Matter Knowledge

Teaching experience has been identified as an important factor in pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) development. However, little is known about how experienced teachers may draw on their previous experience to facilitate their PCK development. This study examined how two experienced high school biology teachers approached the teaching of a newly introduced topic in the curriculum, polymerase chain reaction and their PCK development from the pre-lesson planning phase through the interactive phase to the post-lesson reflection phase. Multiple data sources included classroom observations, field notes, semi-structured interviews and classroom artefacts. It was found that the teachers’ previous experience informed their planning for teaching the new topic, but in qualitatively different ways. This, in turn, had a bearing on their new PCK development. Subject matter knowledge (SMK) can not only facilitate but may also hinder this development. Our findings identify two types of experienced teachers: those who can capitalise on their previous teaching experiences and SMK to develop new PCK and those who do not. The critical difference is whether in the lesson planning stage, the teacher shows the disposition to draw on a generalised mental framework that enables the teacher to capitalise on his existing SMK to develop new PCK. Helping teachers to acquire this disposition should be a focus for teacher training in light of continuous curriculum changes.     

高校教师教育技术素养提升策略探索

在信息时代,教师教育技术素养的高低,直接关系到素质教育、创新教育的成败,因此提升高校教师的教育技术素养显得非常重要。在借鉴前人及同行研究成果的基础上,提出了一个高校教师教育技术素养提升策略模式,分别从加大高校教学资源建设力度、进行教育技术培训、创设教师教育技术素养跟踪评价平台进行跟踪评价、建立提高高校教师教育技术素养的长效保障机制等角度进行了探索。

The critical question addressed in this article is whether it is possible for early years teachers to achieve an understanding and appreciation of children's behaviour and development without also having insights into their own behaviour and family background? It is argued that teachers must recognise the importance of their own background as a key factor in how they look at children, teaching and events in the classroom; that how they were treated as children has a bearing on the way they too, relate to the children in their care; and that there will be echoes of their own up bringing in the way they face the tasks and challenges of teaching. It is particularly important that these issues are addressed by early years teachers given their potential influence on young children's social and emotional development.

当前高教教师面临着巨大的职业心理压力,为数不少的教师出现了职业倦怠的情况。这种状态如果不及时缓解必然会对社会、高校、教师带来危害。有关研究表明,社会支持能有效缓解职业倦怠。社会支持体系是指能够为所需者提供各种资源支持(如物质、金钱、情感、友谊等)的各种支持源(如国家、政府、社区、家庭、同事等)组成的社会网络,这些网络能为所需者提供支持,帮助其解决日常生活中面临的问题与危机。应从宏观、中观和微观三个维度为高校教师建立社会支持体系,倡导从社会环境、社会制度、学校、同事、个人等层面为其提供物质支持、情感支持与信息支持,以帮助教师正确面对压力,减少职业倦怠的发生。
