Although Katherine Mansfield never claimed that she was a radical feminist, she showed her concerns and pondered on females through her life of pursuing freedom and independence, her creative writing skills and her short stories. She had her own feminism consciousness and viewpoints. She believed that man and woman were different and living in a different world, and it’s very hard to understand and communicate with the other sex. Man dominated the society in the economical and political areas in tradition that they had the speech right and ranked above woman. However, Mansfield saw the hope of the awakening of the feminism awareness.  相似文献

John Edgar wideman’s "Fever" is a multiple-voiced text, narrating experiences of the blacks during the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793. The "fever" is essentially a metaphor of racism and endangered human existence. This paper attempts to uncover what lies beneath the "fever" via disentangling the text’s narrative strategies and to foreground Wideman’s concern on his people.  相似文献

This paper explores Laura’s inner world, applying Freud’s theory of the unconscious and the structure of the mind,Jung’s idea of archetypes, and Lacan’s concepts of the three orders. The story in The Garden Party depicts, in the movement toward adulthood, how Laura feels, thinks and acts under the drive of the id, and the adjustment of the ego and the superego. Laura’s psychological development indicates Laura has a healthy personality. She can confront her imperfection in her growth.  相似文献

Cognitive processes underlying a behavioural outcome (like reading ability) and the impact of familial risk (e.g., for dyslexia) have been studied in isolation. We present a novel design, linking the two avenues. How do familial influences impact on children’s cognitive skills, which subsequently underlie reading development? Participants from the Familial Influences on Literacy Abilities (FIOLA) Project included 373 children and their parents. We considered three causal routes from parental reading and children’s putative cognitive endophenotypes to children’s reading. Path analyses showed that half of parental effects on children’s reading bypassed and half operated through children’s cognitive underpinnings. Spousal correlation was small but significant. Findings do not support a strong hypothesis of cognitive endophenotypes with full mediation. Furthermore, we discuss the use of parental skills as a proxy for offspring’s liability. Finally, familial reading difficulties are not fully accounted for by known cognitive skills, which has implications for dyslexia diagnosis.  相似文献

The major problems affecting students in reading are lacking time, vocabulary, background knowledge and reading skills. Among them, lacking vocabulary is the utmost problem, therefore, special attention still need to be paid on vocabulary teaching. To solve the above mentioned problems, countermeasures such as enlarging vocabulary, building background information and reading skills as well as reading extensively are put forward.  相似文献

The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel.  相似文献

English reading,a key procedure of English learning and teaching in middle school,is an essential way of getting information from the globe and communicating with others. Therefore, efficient comprehension on reading materials will directly serve for accepting the information. And it is extremely important for middle school students to acquire certain reading ability. At present, great attention has been paid to the course of reading in the instruction of English by the Chinese Education Department. But middle school students’read ing ability is still much lower than the target they should reach because of a set of existing obstacles that prevent them from being effective English readers. What are these obstacles? How to break them down? This paper will first point out and then analyze the obstacles that af fect middle school students’reading ability from two aspects:linguistic obstacles(obstacles of lexicon, grammar and background knowl edge) and non-linguistic obstacles(obstacles of psychology, interest, skill, and habit). After demonstrating different obstacles, the paper also come up with some corresponding strategies in the hope of helping middle school students to be effective English readers.  相似文献

The author analyzes two texts, Gloria Whelan’s Homeless Bird and Deborah Ellis’s Parvana’s Journey, in an attempt to explain some of the problems and difficulties associated with those texts. The author examines Whelan’s representations of India and finds troubling binaries associated with that text. In comparison, the author finds Ellis’s depictions of Afghanistan more nuanced and complex. The author also discusses student reception of both texts and offers ways to problematize some of their reactions.

Chekhov’s"Enemies"describes two pitiful characters filled with enmities towards each other, and no one can prevail over another because of their absurdness and pettiness. The reading of this story reveals a dark world permeated with miseries, where no one can control himself and every is pitiable. And this kind of impression is mainly engendered by the writer’s con cerned narrating voice which are produced by constant usages of irony and inserted comments.  相似文献

Bookaboo is a television programme aiming to promote literacy and reading among young children. In each episode, a celebrity reads a book to Bookaboo, a dog who plays the drums in a rock band, in order to help him overcome stage fright. Using the episode featuring the picture book (Cowell and Layton in That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown, 2006) as a case study, this article explores how this type of adaptation of picture books transforms the original narrative, with implications for children’s developing narrative literacy. Taking a multimodal social semiotic perspective, this study investigates the changes in meaning which result from the employment of semiotic resources such as animation, sound, and camera movement in the representation of the book on the television show. We argue that the deployment of such resources can subtly reshape the meanings expressed through the modes of language and images in the original picture book, potentially affecting the child viewer’s engagement with the narrative. Examining the use of these resources in the picture book’s televisual representation is thus an important first step towards developing frameworks for evaluating the ability of television programmes that incorporate picture book reading to support children’s literacy.  相似文献

The three traditional methods of backward, forward, and stepwise selection of variables to be included in a “best” regression equation were compared to a method designed to maximize weight validity. With student achievement as the criterion, and aptitudinal variables manifesting considerable multicolinearity as predictors, the subset of variables selected by the traditional methods performed poorer than the one selected by the weight validity maximization method. Implications for constructing regression equations for prediction are discussed, with consideration of the weight validity maximization method recommended in crucial situations.  相似文献
