Responding to a staffing shortage and assessment of usage data, eight of Hale Library's nine service desks were consolidated into one service point. Fourteen months later, the Libraries conducted an assessment of the consolidation using reference transaction data, responses to a survey administered to Libraries’ staff, and responses from a student focus group. The assessment revealed many logistical and staffing challenges with the new desk. As a result, a separate service point for reference was created directly outside the consolidated desk. ABSTRACT Public and academic libraries continue to have a vital role in providing reference services. As more and more information is only available in electronic form, reference librarians need to reaffirm their core values. Some of the changes happening in reference include smaller reference collections, the disposition of printed reference books, and the increased use of electronic tools. Other topics include different service models for the reference desk, the changing nature of reference questions, and changes in staffing at the reference desk. Librarians at the Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, NY, conducted a study to assess the quality of their consumer health information services. They sought to evaluate the accuracy and currency of the medical information provided and to determine if they were able to distinguish an informational from a judgmental question. Patron characteristics and types of questions are analyzed. Several physicians served as evaluators regarding the accuracy of the information provided. The results indicate that the service is of a high quality and that public librarians are successful providers of health information. 相似文献

This article discusses some of the lesser known complexities of LEXlS and WESTLAW and the necessity for evaluating these systems critically. Sample searches highlight the major differences between WESTLAW'S and LEXIS's search protocols. Comparable features of each system are examined to show how users can improve the qualily of their search results and to warn of unintended consequences when users misapply them. Strategies for formulating searches that retrieve relevant cases and prevent the exclusion of potentially relevant cases are considered, along with the economics of online searching. Although the searches presented are limited to Ohio case law, they are adaptable for exploring the nuances of online searching in other state and federal jurisdictions. 相似文献
