The Pacific Northwest Regional Health Sciences Library and the Washington/Alaska Regional Medical Program jointly conducted a service to provide photocopies of articles on cancer topics within twenty-four hours after receiving telephone requests for information from Central Washington physicians. AIM-TWX was utilized as the initial source of references whenever possible, and its benefit as such was evaluated. In the three-month experimental period, twenty-seven requesters made fifty-six requests and received photocopies of 185 articles; the estimated total cost was $1,000, less than $18 per request.A sample of requests showed AIM-TWX to have reduced the total work time per search; moreover, when it was used, AIM-TWX retrieved more than 70% of the articles selected to be sent. Physician response indicated that the service was both needed and appreciated. Further investigation by a similar information service is suggested.  相似文献

At the time this paper was written a unique trial project for disseminating medical literature to physicians had been in operation for six months (October 1971-April 1972) at the Virginia Medical Information System. Doctors in the state who referred patients to the Medical College of Virginia received short lists of references relevant to the problems of their patients as described in referral letters sent them by MCV consultants. Doctors receiving such lists were offered free photocopies of the articles cited if they could not obtain them locally. Of some 700 reference lists sent out, VAMIS received 12(1/2) percent direct responses, and 22 percent of respondents to a questionnaire reported obtaining articles elsewhere. Ninety percent of the respondents favored the service and approved of its method. Funding problems necessitated revision of the service in the summer of 1972. Presently the service is provided only on request of the referring physician.  相似文献

Online LATCH
The LATCH program developed as a means of expanding the library's circle of communication. Online LATCH was initiated to save time, reduce paperwork and to provide information that impacts directly on patient care. Initiated at the unit by physicians or nurses, the LATCH request is typed onto the CRT, relayed through the Hospital Information System (HIS), and is picked up by the library staff who forward the literature directly to the unit to be attached to the patient record. Eighty-nine per cent of LATCH requests are answered the same day. Online LATCH demonstrates a shift in identification of the library as an isolated unit to an interactive resource center.  相似文献

Information centers are being established for many disciplines. For the medical profession, users can benefit directly from these centers by having information searched by medical library professionals and readily available. If the users of an information system are to share in the operating expenses, some equitable system of charges must be established. The numerous systems of establishing user charges are listed and discussed, with the advantages or disadvantages of each system explained. After the systems have been reviewed, alternative methods of establishing prices are presented along with a typical example of what these prices might be, ranging from $7.50 to $2.50 per request. The implementation of the cost system is outlined and certain philosophical questions are posed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

When deciding whether to use UnCover2 or ILL for document delivery, consider these factors: accessibility of the article, how quickly it is needed, and how much it costs the patron. Then within your ILL unit, determine the average delivery time for libraries that own the material. An informal study of UnCover2 shows that within Colorado, ILL can usually deliver quickly enough at no charge to the patron. If the owning libraries cannot deliver within the time frame needed and the patron will pay an average of $10 to $12, UnCover2 can do the job.  相似文献

The rationale for and the production of the 1977 TALON Union Catalog of Monographs are described. The 158,859 records include the existing machine-readable records for six health sciences libraries plus the cataloging of six others, converted by matching other data bases and by keypunching. The method and costs of production are discussed. Use of Computer-Output-Microfiche (COM) significantly decreased the cost and time required for publication. The $.076 unit cost per entry, with both author and title access for the COM method, is almost one-half the unit cost for the previous method which offered only main-entry access. The TALON Catalog compares favorably with the Midwest Medical Union Catalog. The addition of the title index significantly increases its usefulness. However, the unique feature of the TALON Catalog may be its machine-readable form which offers the potential for quantitative analyses of health sciences library collections. Such data may be essential for rational management of limited library funds.  相似文献
