2012年的图书馆展望

如何规划将来的学术图书馆是一个持续不断被关注的专业性话题.本文对新泽西AcRL(高校图书馆协会)和费尔利迪金森大学图书馆举办的"2012年的高校图书馆"为主题的征文竞赛进行了总结,分为三个议题:技术的发展,图书馆的职能以及图书馆员的角色.技术进步作为发展的原动力,决定着学术性图书馆未来的走向;图书馆功能的再造,排名第二;而图书馆员的角色和行为位居第三.     

擘划明天:中美大学图书馆馆长研讨会综述

2015年4月23—24日,北京大学图书馆与哈佛大学图书馆共同举办了中关大学图书馆馆长研讨会。此文综述了研讨会上19位馆长的发言,包括大学图书馆转型策略、图书馆发展环境前瞻、图书馆的价值与使命、资源建设、信息基础设施建设、共建共享及馆际合作、读者服务创新、空间变革、区域发展等主题,以分享大学图书馆在发展转型中的经验,归纳大学图书馆的发展方向。

Partnering Through Staff Rotation in a Multi-Branch Academic Library: One Example at the UCSD Libraries

ABSTRACT

The article describes a partnership between two of the libraries at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) through which two staff in one library worked part-time at the other during the summer of 2006 in order to maximize staffing efficiency among the units, as well as to realize professional development-related goals for the staff involved. The author outlines challenges faced by the project's coordinators, outcomes for the two UCSD libraries, and recommendations for other libraries experimenting with similar staff rotation projects.

Access to Business Research Resources Through Academic Library Websites: A Survey

This study is an examination of access to business research resources through academic library websites, including research databases, catalog services, research guides, and business librarians. The websites of 114 academic libraries serving top business programs in the United States were studied. Results reveal a wide range of access to business research databases among the schools studied (anywhere from 11 to 100 business databases available). More than 95% of the schools provided business research guides, and nearly all schools provided at least some contact information for business librarians.

Barcoding a Small Academic Library:

Barcoding problems are universal to recently-automated small academic libraries. This article chronicles one library's experience and provides practical advice for others facing the same task. A barcode plan and worker guidelines are included. The authors offer the following suggestions for a successful project: (1) Read the shelves first. (2) Create a written plan. (3) Test in advance. (4) Get additional workers if you can. (5) Stress accuracy. (6) Regularly check the work being done. (7) Keep error correction and book repair to a minimum.     

Academic Library Outreach Through Faculty Partnerships and Web-Based Research Aids

Summary

Electronic library services and myriad online resources are shifting the roles and workloads of academic reference librarians. Reallocation of staffing through a differentiated reference desk service model provides time to author curriculum-centered online research guides and tutorials, bibliographies, and webliographies. The expanding electronic information environment also opens new opportunities for teaching partnerships with university faculty. This article showcases a librarian's collaborative work with a history professor, noting student benefits/reactions and implications for future collaboration.     

台湾学术图书馆自动化的未来趋势

近年来, 台湾的大学图书馆在自动化建设方面, 随着电脑科技的发展和网络应用的推广, 面临新的冲击传统的“ 中央主机式” 结构为“ 主从式” 结构所代替, 但仍有许多问题尚待深人探讨, 诸如著作权、调整传统业务以适应自动化系统的要求、字符集的标准化等等。著者对上述问题进行了分析, 并提出了评鉴自动化系统的若干注意事项。     

Academic Library Status:

This study determined from published advertisements the range of variability in employment opportunities of academic librarians. Research questions were formulated to investigate employment with regard to rank, academic expectations, benefits, tenure, and issues related to salary and equal employment. A survey and analysis through the use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Program were made of selected data available in published advertisements in The Chronicle of Higher Education.. Of the 67.5% of librarians holding academic status, results show variations in rank, academic expectations, and benefits among institutions and regions.

Personas: Stepping Into the Shoes of the Library User

Personas are researched-based user archetypes which can help uncover gaps, highlight new opportunities, and inform the functionality of a space, resource, or service. Personas are a useful tool for organizations, such as libraries, which are interested in improving the user experience, since they tap into users' expectations, behaviors, and attitudes. This column will explain what personas are, the advantages and disadvantages of using personas, and where personas are used. A list of resources for exploring and creating personas is also provided.     

Marketing the Academic Library

Abstract

Academic libraries do not often launch public relations campaigns. However, recent changes and enhancements at the Geoffrey R. Weller Library at the University of Northern British Columbia prompted librarians to embark on a public awareness campaign built upon the “@ your library” framework. The campaign featured multiple strategies, including posters, displays, brochures, newspaper ads, and giveaways. The goal of the campaign was to break away from the stereotypical image of the library as a research necessity, and show it instead as the beating heart of the University. The campaign is evaluated and the continued need for marketing and promotion of academic library services is examined.     

Leaving the Academic Library

A survey was distributed to former academic librarians to determine why they left the field and which career they pursued afterward. Results suggest that former academic librarians are unhappy with administration, image, and salary. Time spent as librarians helped individuals in their new careers.
