A Study of Input Hypothesis and Its Influence on English Reading Teaching

The target language input plays a significant role in the process of foreign language teaching and learning.One of the most influential studies about input is Krashen’s Input Hypothesis.It emphasized the importance of comprehensible input in foreign language learning.This thesis is mainly to study the significance of Input Hypothesis and its implication on reading teaching.The problems exited in reading teaching and some suggestions are given at last.     

Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Its Pedagogical Implications on Second Language Teaching

Krashen has developed the Input Hypothesis, which has deep influence on teaching method of second language. This thesis focuses on the Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, which includes the following five hypotheses: the acquisition- learning hypothesis, the monitor hypothesis, the natural order hypothesis, the input hypothesis and the effective filter hypothesis. The thesis tries to explore the pedagogical implications of Krashen’s Input Hypothesis on second language teaching in the aspects of the input quantity and input quality. The thesis tries to explore the most effective methods of second language teaching, in the hope that it will help to improve the efficiency of second language teaching.     

A Critical Review of Critical Period Hypothesis in Second Language Acquisition

The researches on Critical Period Hypothesis(CPH) aims to explain the importance of the age factor in the process of learning a second language.In this essay,a critical review of the theoretical issues and empirical research on the CPH will spread out.Meanwhile,the discussion of implication and limitation of the CPH research will be concerned as well.     

The role of new technologies in competence teaching in higher education： The case of accounting

The Spanish educational system will require certain changes in order to achieve the Bologna objectives for the European Higher Education Area, including a more professional profile, with new activities and roles for both students and teachers, who must assume new skills that will affect concepts and attitudes related to the teaching and learning processes within the framework of training projects. However, students must also take a leading role in the educational process by adopting independent, meaningful and cooperative learning methods. This process will imply a notable change of mindset for the typical Spanish students and will involve a high degree of collaboration between students and teachers. Teachers will have to choose suitable methodologies for achieving those objectives, within the academic framework and considering the characteristics of professional training in skills. In addition, they must create the appropriate structural and organizational conditions to carry out these activities （class size, space, educational organization, etc.）. This paper describes the authors＇ experience in designing learning methodologies for the teaching of accountancy in the business administration degree course at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part describes the methodology designed for teaching accounting, based on PBL （problem-based learning）, compiled with Internet-based technologies. We analyze its use and evolution in two accounting subjects in the first and the fourth years of the degree. The second part presents the results for each subject in these years. The authors also point out the differences between students who chose the learning methodology described and those who used the traditional approach. The final part of the paper presents the conclusions obtained from the statistical treatment of the results and the analysis of different options for correlating the information obtained. These results show that there is a direct correlation between the use of an active learning model--through the teaching methodology--and obtaining satisfactory exam results in the subject. Finally, the authors analyze these results and consider how they should be used for evaluating the suitability of the methodology and to determine whether it is necessary to redesign the methodology to fit in with the characteristics, conditions and limitations of the teaching and learning processes.     

Evaluation of Email Effectiveness in ESL Writing Classroom Guided by Second Language Acquisition Theory

The wide application of internet technology has provided the possibility to study and research new writing concepts and teaching modes in the classroom of English as a Second Language(ESL).In this trend,using email to assist English writing class has gained much attention in this field.This paper discusses the evaluation of email effectiveness with the implication of the Second Language Acquisition(SLA) theory.The result shows that the email assisted English writing class is a very salient method though it had its limitation somehow.

The Application of Genre- based Pedagogy in College English Reading and Writing Instruction

The genre-base pedagogy is based on genre and genre analysis theories. It provides a new direction to improve the teaching effect of College English reading and writing. This paper analyzes the notion of genre, highlights genre analysis and genre-based pedagogy for its advantages in language teaching, clearifies the relationship between reading and writing, and then presents a sample class which adopts genre-based pedagogy to textbook-based College English reading and writing instruction.

＂E-book flood＂ for changing EFL learners＇ reading attitudes

This paper was intended to investigate the effects of using e-books （or texts with multimedia support） in an ERP （extensive reading program） on EFL （English as a foreign language） learners＇ attitudes toward reading in English. In a junior high school in northern Taiwan, 109 students from 3 intact classes were recruited in the 10-week ERP of e-books. Each class was introduced to a list of 140 selected e-books for the reading program; each student was then encouraged to read e-books after school, with the target of reading 4 e-books every week. The degree of changes in reading attitudes was assessed by using the reading attitudes scale （Stokmans, 1999） before and after the e-book ERP. In addition, the teacher＇s class notes of the students＇ reading behaviors and reactions as well as their spontaneous oral or written feedback were analyzed to be triangulated with the quantitative data. The results showed that the e-books had positive effects on the students＇ attitudinal changes in all dimensions of reading attitudes, namely, utility, development, enjoyment and escape, as well as in all the cognitive, affective and conative components. The results also showed that the features of the e-books, especially oral reading, highlighting, animations and music/sound effects, were considered important to change their attitudes. The implementation of interaction and learner control in the e-books guaranteed positive attitudinal changes as well.     

A Curriculum Report on Teachers as Decision-maker

Curriculum design is an aspect of education profession which focuses on developing curricula for students.Educators will take many factors in consideration when design a curriculum.In practical teaching,teacher as decision makers to design an appropriate curricu lum and teaching activities play an important part in the whole teaching and learning.Many classroom teachers are working with students of different levels of ability,and they need to be able to adjust the curriculum to keep all of the students engaged and learning.It may also be necessary to change the pace of a curriculum to deal with problems as they arise.The essay analyse five parts in designing the curriculum as a teacher decision maker and get a conclusion according to the whole analysis course.     

Using web blogs as a tool to encourage pre-class reading, post-class reflections and collaboration in higher education

This paper reports on the students＇ experiments of using blogs to encourage themselves to do pre-class reading assignment and reflections after class. The sample in the study included five ESL （English as a Second Language） graduate students in a course of teaching methods, and 90 software engineering students in an undergraduate information technology program. Results indicated that there was a positive attitude towards the use of blogs for pre-class preparation and post-class reflections. However, considering the successful experience, it is important to consider the class size, students＇ educational level, and the type of reading assignment.     

An Introduction to Interactive Teaching Mode and Its Implication in College English Writing Class

Interactive teaching mode refers to a dynamic process of teaching in which teachers and students and teaching materials will affect each other. It offers language learners a chance to communicate and exchange information frequently. Group cooperative leaning has long been considered to be one of the most important forms of the interactive teaching mode. English writing,one of the essential English language skills, is an integral part of college English teaching. The high or low level of English writing is a comprehensive reflection of various abilities. This paper aims to explore the application of the interactive teaching model in college English writing class in order to improve students’ motivation and ability of English writing, thus can provide an effective way of learning to the current college English writing class.     

Analysis of “Reading and Writing Book (Book I)” of “21~(st) Century College English”

The quality of course books decides the quality of teaching. It is important to evaluate course books. The author analyzes "Reading and Writing Book" of "21st Century College English" based on the Nuttal’s reading model. Firstly, this model is presented in the open- ing part. Secondly, then the author discusses suitability of the course book from its content variety, authenticity and the training of language skills. Thirdly, how Nuttal’s reading prin- ciples and reading skills are reflected in such book is analyzed. Based on the discussion and analysis, conclusions are drawn that it is suitable for reading instruction; many of the reading principles and reading skills are well embodied and trained in this book. Finally suggestions are presented in the conclusion part. These suggestions include: 1) this book should be adopted more authentic materials such as poems, advertisements, recipes, travel guidebooks and so on; 2) teachers may present and train students’ reading skills systematically; 3) teachers should provide more and better non-linear text, such as col- ored pictures, reference book list, etc.
