Marketing Reference Resources and Services Through a University Outreach Program

Abstract

In many respects the Outreach Program at Mississippi State University Libraries provides an excellent framework for the marketing of reference services and resources. It is often the close, long-term collaboration between academic faculty and reference librarians, however, that makes the discovery of crucial information needs possible. In-depth interviews with strategically selected faculty and continuous feedback provide the basis of effective planning for reference services and a wise marketing strategy.

New Tools for Collection Development

Abstract

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library's merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections.     

An Opportunity for Change: College Accreditation and the New Library Manager

Abstract

Administering special collections within an academic branch library presents challenges in the areas of public services, collection management, facilities planning, and staffing. In art and architecture libraries, special collections can include a variety of materials such as rare books, trade catalogs, builder's guides, graphic and visual materials, artists' books, archival records in many formats, and files of ephemera. Public service issues relating to the administration of special collections housed in an architecture branch library (and its off-site repositories) will be addressed. Collection care and access services will be examined in light of recent technologies.

随着数字资源的迅速增加,有关数字资源的馆藏控制进入了各图书馆的议事日程。如何对数字馆藏实施有效的控制?该文首先回顾了传统馆藏控制理论,接着介绍了数字馆藏控制的基本概念和内容,并从数字资源保存、备份、信息生命周期、控制数字资源采集量、数字资源的分级与剔除四个方面具体地介绍了数字馆藏控制的主要范畴。于论文的最后部分,作者还从建立数字资源存储图书馆、建立数字资源评估体系、设备更新、与其他有关厂商协作、建立专门的研究队伍等五个方面简介了与数字馆藏控制相关的问题。     

Flickr as a Digital Image Collection Host: A Case Study of the Alcuin Society

This report is a case study of the Alcuin Society's use of Flickr as a digital image collection host. It covers the selection, implementation, and promotion of Flickr as the place for its photographs and images.     

Access to Serials Collections in Four Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The author surveyed four university libraries in southwest Nigeria regarding access to their serials collections. It was found that in the libraries surveyed, undergraduates not in their final year often had at most limited access to the collections. This can be attributed to a variety of reasons including security and a lack of space; however, of more importance still is the fact that the collections are intended to cater mainly to researchers. In addition, it was found that the libraries usually provide open access to their serials collections, the collections are generally understaffed and suffer from a shortage of current, relvant journals.     

Managing Serials in a Large Digital Library: Case Study of the UNT Libraries Digital Collections

The Portal to Texas History (http://texashistory.unt.edu) and the University of North Texas (UNT) Digital Library (http://digital.library.unt.edu) contain more than 445,000 items collectively, hosted by the UNT Libraries. These collections include a variety of serial publications such as newsletters, magazines, scholarly journals, annual reports, and yearbooks. Many of these serials are key resources for the user groups of both repositories. In this article, we discuss the importance of serials within our collections, some of the challenges, the standards we use, and how we leverage metadata to facilitate access to serials for diverse global users.

When it's all Greek: The Importance of Collaborative Information Literacy Outreach Programming to Greek Student Organizations

This article examines the rationale and benefits of establishing collaborative outreach partnerships between academic librarians and student services professionals to meet the information literacy needs of Greek students. Through a literature review and case study, the authors discuss the realities involved in facilitating this kind of collaboration and its potential to create meaningful co-curricular outreach programming.     

Creating connections: Library instruction across campus

The Library Outreach Program Committee at Western Washington University serves as a coordinating body for outreach activities to the non-departmental campus community. Successful projects include collaboration with New Student Services/Family Outreach, Academic User Technology Services, and Residential Life. A database of outreach activities assists in tracking and assessing outreach activities.
