Functional adult literacy interventions have been regarded for many decades by policy makers as an effective way of imparting health knowledge. Supported by research on the statistical relationships between women’s literacy rates and health indicators, this dominant policy discourse is based on assumptions that non-literate women lack understanding and confidence, and that formal programmes and institutions constitute the main sites of learning. Proposing a broader conceptualisation of literacy as a social practice and of health as connected with social justice, this article draws on policy analysis and the authors’ earlier research in Nepal to re-examine the relationship between gender, literacy and health. By comparing health and literacy approaches used within the education and health sectors and taking account of new and indigenous informal learning practices, the article points to ways of investigating the complex interaction of factors that influence inequalities in gender and health at community level.  相似文献

Stigma is a powerful force in preventing university students with mental health difficulties from gaining access to appropriate support. This paper reports on an exploratory study of university students with mental health difficulties that found most students did not disclose their mental health problems to staff at university. This was primarily due to fear of discrimination during their studies and in professional employment. Many students went to considerable efforts to hide their mental health condition and in doing so struggled to meet university requirements. Of the minority who did disclose, most received helpful assistance with both their studies and management of their mental health condition. The university was the main source of support services including counselling, disability, student union and housing. A range of measures are required to address the impact of stigma and mental health to empower students so that they can disclose in the confidence that they will be treated fairly.  相似文献

Although college student mental health concerns are on the rise, many struggling students do not seek psychological treatment when needed. Stigma toward psychological treatment has been demonstrated to influence intent to seek treatment in college student populations. This study aimed to identify factors that predict treatment stigma in college students by examining other forms of student-held stigma, parent-held stigma, and mental health literacy. Results indicated that student-held personal, perceived, and self-stigma all predicted student attitudes toward treatment, while parent-held personal stigma was found to predict self-stigma in students. Those individuals who had received previous education about psychological disorders had lower levels of personal stigma, and, surprisingly, higher levels of self-stigma. Implications for campus outreach programming are discussed.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to explore the mental health and subjective well-being of staff working with adolescents with severe and profound multiple learning difficulties. The participants were 19 teachers and 25 teaching assistants working in an inner London, local authority, specialist day provision. A demographic questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Positive Affect Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale were used as data collection tools. The inferential statistical tools used were t-tests and correlational analyses. The study brought to light a high number of borderline and abnormal anxiety scores among all staff. The study also found a significant difference in the resilience scores of teachers and teaching assistants, with teaching assistants scoring higher on the resilience scale. The results, alongside findings from previous research, call for better mental health support for teachers and staff working in the field of special educational needs and disabilities. The study highlights the emotional toll on educators, and the need for mitigation strategies that promote good mental health outcomes for both teachers and students.  相似文献

This research is an evaluation of a six-week mental health literacy programme, referred to as the Cambridge United Community Trust’s ‘Mind Your Head’ programme, which was delivered by sports professionals to secondary school students (11-16) in Cambridge, England, during 2017–18. A Mental Health Literacy Scale was used to measure students’ knowledge of mental health issues pre- and post-intervention. Statistical data from these surveys were analysed using an independent samples t-test. Focus groups were held with students in each school, and individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with one lead teacher in each school. The statistical data indicate that statistically significant improvements in mental health literacy were achieved, and this occurred across all genders and ethnicities. The qualitative data suggest that this programme resulted in positive attitudes towards mental health and improved knowledge of how to seek help. The data indicate that investment in similar programmes would be beneficial for schools in improving students’ knowledge of mental health and reducing stigma.  相似文献

为增强大学生心理健康课程课堂教学的有效性,充分发挥课堂教学在心理健康教育中的主渠道功能,进行课堂教学设计实践探索。从课堂教学目标的确立、教学内容的设计、教学组织的实施等层面进行规范而灵活的设计,在遵循倡导积极的课堂教学价值取向、追求应用型的课堂教学目标导向、运用直通生活的课堂教学内容素材、强化活动导向的课堂教学组织、构建正向多元的课堂反馈机制五项原则的前提下,建立了"以心理规律为基础的专业化课堂设计、以现实情境为主导的生活化教学过程"的心理健康课堂教学模式,并在教学目标、教学方法以及师资团队等方面上提出了注意要点。  相似文献

高校是培养人才的基地,高校扩招后,青年教师人数激增,他们的心理健康状况也不容乐观,在心理承受力差、适应性差、焦虑抑郁等方面问题比较突出。扩招后高校青年教师产生这些心理问题有一定的原因,依托工会建立高校教师心理健康援助中心的做法,可以缓解或消除青年教师的心理健康问题。  相似文献
