Building A Contemporary Public Library Through Community Engagement: A Personal Journey

ABSTRACT

This article discusses how a broad understanding of community engagement has influenced the conception, realization, and services of one of the most internationally lauded modern public libraries, Dokk1, opened in 2015 in Aarhus, Denmark. Leveraging the power of networking and partnerships and the engagement of citizens and stakeholders is a key component in the success of the library. Input derived from the engagement process has informed decisions and influenced planning profoundly, contributing to the library’s evolution into a significant cultural and communal hub with 1.4 million annual visits from people from all walks of life. The article examines the journey toward this achievement through the lens of the author, who has been a central actor in the decision making and planning processes leading up to Dokk1     

Connecting with Community: The Importance of Community Engagement in Rural Public Library Systems

While the topic of community engagement in public libraries has been researched in urban public library systems, little research explores community engagement in rural library systems. The Canadian province of Nova Scotia is largely rural and sparsely populated, with a dwindling and aging rural population. This report examines how community engagement can connect Nova Scotia’s rural public libraries with their communities. Librarians from eight predominantly rural library systems across the province were interviewed regarding the community engagement practices currently being used within their libraries and how their patrons (particularly youth) were reacting and responding to these practices. This article synthesizes the information derived from these interviews and provides a summary of the community engagement efforts being made throughout Nova Scotia. This study ultimately determines that while librarians in rural communities face a number of challenges when attempting to implement community engagement (e.g., small budgets and low staffing numbers), they remain extremely passionate about the topic and dedicated to serving their communities in the most meaningful and relevant way possible.     

Piloting Consumer Health Information Services in Collaboration with a Community Research Engagement Program

At an academic health science center, librarians partnered with a community research engagement program to offer a suite of consumer health information services. The services included training staff in the use of online consumer health resources, purchasing a print collection of monographs, and creating a guide to both the online and print resources for staff use. Focus groups were conducted to assess information needs, and the workshop attendees’ online health information competency was assessed presession and postsession. This article details planning and intervention efforts, and proposes future activities to meet the information needs of HealthStreet and its clients.     

Statewide Initiative to Embed Consumer Health Librarians in Public Libraries: A Case Study

In 2004 a collaborative, statewide outreach project in Delaware was undertaken where consumer health librarians were embedded in public libraries. In order to explore the effect of the embedded librarians on the quality of health information provision, unobtrusive reference visits were made to half of the public libraries in the state. The query “Do vaccines cause autism?” was posed to library staff; resources provided were recorded. In 67 percent of visits, public library staff provided authoritative health information resources. It appears the embedded librarians had a positive residual effect on the provision of authoritative health resources for addressing an ambiguous query.     

Community Engagement at an Emerging Academic Medical Library: A Three-Pronged Outreach Model

The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s (OUWB) service-oriented mission and vision is reflected in all aspects of the school including its culture, curriculum, research, community engagement, and the OUWB Medical Library. Though starting informally, the OUWB Medical Library’s outreach program has matured and now sustains a wide array of activities each year. This outreach program has blossomed into a three-pronged model that is inclusive of activities and endeavors engaging the institution and local community: integrate, partner, and create. Among its successes and challenges, the library’s ongoing outreach efforts have showcased the value of libraries in promoting community health and meaningfully contributing to the institutional mission.

图书馆开展社区公共卫生服务是图书馆的使命与社会教育职责在社区发展中的表现形式。本文通过对比国内外图书馆开展相关服务的实践,总结出当前我国图书馆开展公共卫生信息服务存在的主要问题,论述了图书馆开展公共卫生信息服务需要坚持的基本原则、工作目标和实现路径,提出了图书馆开展社区公共卫生信息服务的工作方针、角色定位、工作目标、内容体系等。     

社会资本对社群数字不平等状况的影响研究——芝加哥公共图书馆CyberNavigator项目的案例分析

采用参与和介入观察、访谈等田野调查方法,对芝加哥公共图书馆基金会发起的虚拟导航员项目在唐人街社区公共图书馆的运行情况进行了深入调研。该案例研究表明,社会资本在图书馆读者尤其是特殊社群获取计算机免费培训信息方面扮演着支配型角色;桥接型社会资本为社群数字贫困成员实现数字脱贫提供了先决条件;社区公共图书馆在社群成员的数字化生活中可以成为一个重要社会网络节点。以芝加哥公共图书馆基金会为代表的非营利组织可以增加公益信息机构如图书馆的团结型(内部型)社会资本储量。     

从创新扩散理论看公共图书馆网上社区信息服务

网上社区信息服务是公共图书馆一种创新服务模式。依据创新扩散理论分析公共图书馆网上社区信息服务发展的影响因素．其中相对优越性、兼容性、可试验性、可观察性、传播途径、社会系统本质、改变组织提升力的程度、创新的决策类型等因素都对公共图书馆网上社区信息服务产生积极作用．只有复杂性对其发展产生一定的负面影响。根据这一分析．中国公共图书馆网上社区信息服务将得到快速发展。

随着Web2.0的普及,widget在强调个性化定制的时代应运而生。通过对公共图书馆社区信息服务的现状进行分析,认为公共图书馆可以利用widget开展更为方便化、个性化的社区信息服务,有效地满足图书馆用户的信息需求。

Our Path to Engagement,Learning, and Stewardship: The Oak Park Public Library,the American Library Association,and the Harwood Institute

How do we engage with our community in a more meaningful way? How do we make the user experience the center of all we do? What impact are we having and how do we measure it? In an effort to better answer these questions and make a tighter connection between library objectives and the broader needs of the community, the Oak Park Public Library embarked on a journey to “turn outward.” Following the Harwood model for community engagement, Oak Park has made strides in unifying its internal operations and strengthening strategic partnerships. Its intention is wider and deeper community impact.

Health Sciences Library Support of a University Common Reading Program: A Case Study

Common reading programs have become increasingly popular on college and university campuses as a means for increasing student engagement, retention, and success. This article describes the characteristics, goals, and benefits of common reading programs and provides examples from the literature of academic library involvement in them. Finally, an example is provided of how one academic health sciences library participated in its institution’s First-Year Summer Reading program.     

Developing Media Literacy in Public Libraries: Learning from Community Media Centers

The rise of digital media labs and spaces for content creation in public libraries has been documented in the scholarly literature. However, fewer studies have investigated the outcomes of media literacy initiatives in community media centers (CMCs) and how they might inform similar programs and services in public libraries. This article reports findings from a study that used qualitative research to investigate the current goals and activities of CMCs across the United States. The findings show that the educational, social, and community benefits of these programs could be useful for public libraries to consider in developing or augmenting their own media literacy initiatives.

A New Approach to Health Literacy: Working with Spanish Speaking Community Health Workers

This case study describes the integration of pop culture, music, and scenarios into a consumer health curriculum for community health workers (CHW)/Promotoras De Salud of Hispanic/Latino decent. The class goal is to ensure that participants learn about reliable health resources and how to use them when reaching out to their clientele. This interactive approach to teaching consumer health information was something that evolved after teaching this topic for many years and finding the need to reach the CHW population and enhance their learning experience of health information.     

基于扎根理论的移动图书馆社群化服务用户参与影响因素研究

[目的/意义]新媒体环境下,以用户原创内容、互动分享关系、自组织活动和参与式服务设计为特点的移动图书馆社群化服务成为图书馆服务的新模式。从用户视角入手,探究移动图书馆社群化服务中用户参与的影响因素,进而构建移动图书馆社群化服务理论模型。[方法/过程]通过半结构化访谈方式对10名受访者进行调查,运用扎根理论方法对访谈资料进行分析和归纳以提炼影响用户参与的因素,并对因素间的作用路径进行分析。[结果/结论]最终归纳出影响用户参与的4个主范畴,即基础服务质量、社群化服务价值、用户社群化关系和参与式服务设计,并以此为基础构建影响因素与作用路径理论模型,帮助从用户角度深入了解移动图书馆社群化服务的构建方向,为移动图书馆未来在资源组织、服务更新等方面完善自身功能提供一定的借鉴。     

我国公共图书馆个人信息保护理论研究

总结当前我国公共图书馆服务中存在的个人信息安全问题,主要包括个人办证信息、个人活动信息、个人网络痕迹以及个人空间的安全问题等四个方面,并在此基础上提出构建我国公共图书馆个人信息保护体系的建议,即以法制建设为中心,以提高读者自我保护意识为重点,以图书馆学会为主导,以先进网络技术为支撑,以图书馆行业自律为手段。
