JiTT——Blending Learning理念下的信息化教学模式

近年来,适时教学（JiTT）作为一种能有效促进学生自主学习的教学模式,在欧美国家本科教学中受到推崇。JiTT既包含传统的面对面教学,又包含了学生自主网络探究的环节,充分体现了Blending Learning的新理念。文章通过对JiTT内涵、国外相关成功案例进行剖析,强调了成功实践JiTT的关键因素,并得出了JiTT较之传统本科授课的优势所在,以及对目前我国本科教学的启示。以期为我国当前开展的“质量工程”提供借鉴。     

Library Learning Space—Empirical Research and Perspective

Dentistry &; Oral Sciences Source from EBSCO Information Services provides indexing and full-text access to an extensive selection of dental journal literature, as well some full-text dental monographs. As stated by EBSCO, titles are chosen from those commonly held in dental school libraries. The database aims to support practitioners, researchers, and advanced dental education. This column includes sample searches from Dentistry &; Oral Sciences Source as well as a discussion of its special content and features.

Cognitive Processes and Information Literacy: Some Initial Results From a Survey of Business Students’ Learning Activities

A survey of classroom learning activity and research skills was conducted to obtain data on information literacy competence and critical thinking requirements among all undergraduate students enrolled as business majors at Memorial University of Newfoundland, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Initial findings confirm past larger-scale studies, particularly business students' preference for electronic resources over print, prior skills acquisition being largely self-taught, and reluctance to consult with a librarian during the research process. Regarding critical thinking, survey results can be interpreted as indicating ceremonial conformity in educational discourse versus classroom teaching.

The article provides an outline from an historical standpoint of how Italian cataloging rules have dealt with serials and gives a general picture of the current situation and trends. The most recent of the three national codes issued up to the present lime (1921,1956, and 1979) recommends the creation of a separate catalog for this type of publication in conformity with a national standard (UNI norm 6392) conceived outside the framework of the functions of the general library catalog. There exists, however, a substantially uniform cataloging tradition that allows access by title and deals with title changes in accordance with the principle of successive entry. The only existing national periodical file was created by the Istituto di studi sulla ricerca e documentazione scientifica (ISRDS) of the Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (CNR), set up in conformity with UNI norm 6392. The existence of this file, whose records are to be adapted and converted, forms the basis of a government project to create a periodical file within the catalog of the National Library Service (SBN).     

Symposium Introduction: Farm and Rural Radio—Some Beginnings and Models

Although radio is used principally for entertainment in many countries, it also plays a vital role in providing information to rural and farm populations. It is a lifeline to many groups and individuals in developing countries. Early experiments with radio in the U.S. were directed in large part to farm listeners. Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture developed significant radio services for farmers. Radio has made dramatic contributions to agriculture and farming, including the recognition and support of women in managing and operating farms, and currently includes network services that aid farmers and rural populations all over the world.

Don't Let Micropayments Penalize You—Experience From The City University Of Hong Kong

Self-service is the trend of today's libraries. The Run Run Shaw Library at the City University of Hong Kong therefore is transforming itself in the same direction and offers to its users what it calls the Easy-service. However, the need to handle cash-based micropayments at the service counter is a stumbling block. There is an urgent need for the Library to choose, out of the different payment technologies available, the most suitable one to automate these administrative costly but small-valued payment transactions. The Library's different attempts in this regard and ultimately the integration of the most popular e-purse in Hong Kong in its different payment transactions are therefore mentioned. Overdue fine payments are identified as the micropayments that must be automated if the administration costs are to be reduced and manpower is to be released to make Easy-service a total success.     

Studying for Exams Just Got More Relaxing—Animal-Assisted Activities at the University of Connecticut Library

In recent years, academic libraries have expanded their traditional focus on intellectual and scholarly pursuits, with many libraries now initiating programs that support student growth, development, and wellness. Although providing animal-assisted activities to college students is a fairly new concept, the social and therapeutic benefits of pet ownership or simply interacting with a companion animal are well documented. The University of Connecticut's Homer Babbidge Library on the Storrs campus chose to support the physical and emotional well-being of students during the stress-filled week of finals by providing therapy dogs. Student interaction and feedback were overwhelmingly positive.     

He Asked Me What!?—Using Shared Online Accounts as Training Tools for Distance Learning Librarians

ABSTRACT

This study explores the idea of creating a knowledge base from shared online accounts to use in training librarians who perform distance reference services. Through a survey, follow-up interviews and a case study, the investigators explored current and potential use of shared online accounts as training tools. This study revealed that the participants viewed the concept positively, but many encountered barriers to effectively employing a local knowledge base as a training tool.     

Open Access to Research Outputs—Institutional Policies and Researchers' Views: Results From Two Complementary Surveys

This paper presents the results of two complementary surveys undertaken in 2008 as part of a wider project investigating the effects and impact of open access to research outputs in the UK. The institutional view, from a survey of academic librarians, is compared to researchers' perceptions and practices. Researchers were largely unaware of their institutions' policies with regard to open access, or whether they had an institutional repository. Reasons for making research outputs available on open access, or not doing so, were sought, and the role of open access material as a research resource investigated. The surveys found that many researchers maintained a suspicion of open access publications, both as authors and as users of scholarly material, together with a degree of ignorance about open access and the role of institutional repositories. This suggests that a degree of culture change may be needed, as institutions develop repositories with a view to future research assessment requirements, and more funders adopt open access mandates for the outputs from research which they fund.     

Virtual Information for Patient Care—VIP Care: An Electronic Collection to Promote Learning Among Third-Year Medical Students

Virtual Information for Patient Care (VIP Care) is an electronic collection of materials assembled to promote learning among Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) clinical clerks. Materials in the collection are selected on the basis of how well they match the core clerkship learning objectives. Consistent with TUSM curricular emphasis on utilizing evidence from research, VIP Care articles are culled, when possible, from Hirsh Health Sciences Library's electronic Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) resource collection. This article describes the VIP Care collection within the context of the larger Patient Logs project of which it is a part and explains how this collection helps promote learning. It also reports on the process of compiling the collection as well as some of the methods librarians have adopted for publicizing the collection and keeping the content current.     

The Role of Patriotism in Explaining the TV Audience of National Team Games—Evidence From Four International Tournaments

In the literature addressing the determinants of TV audiences in sports, both the absolute and relative playing strength of the opponents play a prominent role. Regarding national team competitions, however, this study conjectures that patriotism matters as well. Analyzing the Swiss TV audience at 2 World Cups and 2 European Football Championships, this study finds strong evidence that TV ratings are highly affected by the sizes of the groups of foreign residents affiliated with the teams playing on the field.     

News Habits Among Adolescents: The Influence of Family Communication on Adolescents’ News Media Use—Evidence From a Three-Wave Panel Study

Keeping up with what’s going on in the world of politics and current affairs through various news media is commonly seen as important for civic engagement and informed citizenship. Today, however, citizens face more opportunities than ever to select media content according to their personal preferences and interests—leading to what previous research has identified as a polarization between news-seekers and news-avoiders. Given heightened concerns regarding growing shares of news-avoiders in particular, this study analyzes the development, stability, and family influences on Swedish adolescents’ news habits over time. The findings, based on panel survey data among adolescents and their parents, show that (a) news habits are fairly stable at the individual level, (b) parents’ own news consumption is the most consistent predictor of adolescents’ development of news habits, and (c) these family effects are distinct from adolescents’ personal motivations for seeking out news.
