Name Authority Work in Public Libraries

Random samples of U.S. public libraries were surveyed in summer 2010 to ascertain their name authority cataloging practices. Comparisons of authority work processes and types of authority work done were made among public libraries of different sizes. Results were compared to previous studies of public and academic libraries.     

A Fistful of Headings: Name Authority Control for Video Recordings

Lower DVD costs and increased patron demand have led to more video recordings in library catalogs. With long lists of cast and crew, these catalog records are more detailed than many books. For institutions requiring authorized name headings, both personal and corporate, heavily detailed catalog records for video recordings can be burdensome. Not all libraries that contribute original cataloging records to utilities such as OCLC are authorized to create corresponding authority records. A recent survey asked a sample of catalog librarians of video recordings in different types of libraries about their viewpoints and workflows in the context of authority control.     

PCC: A Leader of Change

Abstract

From its beginnings, the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has been an international leader of change in bibliographic and authority control and maintenance, and metadata creation and distribution. This article highlights some PCC achievements in these areas.     

Cost-Effectiveness and Benefits of Outsourcing Authority Control

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates the collaboration of three entities- the library, its online system and the authority service vendor-to achieve online authority control in a medium-sized academic library efficiently and cost-effectively. The authority service vendor checks and revises (as needed) the headings of the library's new bibliographic records, providing new authority records for them. Through a separate notification service, the vendor also provides revised authority records for the existing authority file, alerting the library when in-house online maintenance is needed. In this online environment, authority records and bibliographic records are maintained automatically by the vendor authority service. Thus, using various authority heading reports which can be generated by the local online system in conjunction with the notification service, the library concentrates its authority work on the elimination or correction of obsolete headings. The authority vendor services are effective and reduce the cost of maintaining the online catalog. Ultimately, accurate standardized headings enhance the ease and effectiveness of online searching and retrieval for all who consult the library's catalog.

The Development and Current Status of Authority Control at the National Library of China

ABSTRACT

This article gives a thorough introduction to authority control at the National Library of China from several perspectives including bibliographic services, the online cataloging center, acquisitions, and the library's integrated library system. It introduces the objectives, principles, applications, solution to the problem, and concludes with comments and insights on the issues surrounding the proposed NLC authority control system. This article also discusses the importance of authority control for access.     

The Anglo-American Authority File: A PCC Story

Abstract

This article examines the motivations for the collaboration between the British Library and Library of Congress to develop a joint (Anglo-American) authority file. It describes the obstacles that had to be overcome for the British Library to become a Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) “copy holder”, or node. It considers the contribution the British Library made to NACO, the benefits it has derived from participation in Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), and concludes by looking ahead to the next 25?years.

讨论网络环境下规范控制的重要性,分析国内中文名称规范应用方面与国外的差距。以中文人名规范数据为例,通过与中国机读格式的对照,形成基础语义描述词汇集,分析关联集成的思路。最后,展望其应用前景,建议对中国古代著者规范进行示范建设。     

The International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI): The Evolving Future of Name Authority Control

This article describes the project to build the initial International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) database by deploying the techniques used to develop the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF). It focuses particularly on the work of the OCLC team in transforming the VIAF “resource file” model of matched data into a robust, operational, and authoritative file of uniquely assigned ISNIs as a base for an ongoing ISNI assignment system, and on the quality assurance validation of the database provided by the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The need for future interaction between ongoing ISNI assignment and name authority control in libraries is also explored.     

The PCC ISNI Pilot: Exploring Identity Management on a Global,Collaborative Scale

Abstract

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) conducted a multi-institution Pilot project to contribute metadata to the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) database. In addition to describing the goals, structure, and activities undertaken in the Pilot, this article examines some of the experiences of PCC metadata practitioners as they sought to incorporate ISNIs into their metadata workflows and pursue a wide range of ISNI use cases. Lastly, the article outlines next steps that flowed from the Pilot as the PCC has parlayed its newly developing identity management expertise into additional PCC program explorations.     

FRAD概念模型与CNMARC规范控制

阐述规范数据功能需求（FRAD）的研究背景与概念模型,并比较FRAD与CNMARC规范控制的内容、检索点、著录实体的异同,分析在CNMARC规范控制中实现FRAD概念模型存在的障碍。FRAD为我国制订编目规则、确定标目形式、参照范围以及附注内容等规范提供参考依据。     

数据网络中中文名称规范档的建设与发展

[目的/意义]名称规范档在书目数据库中对书目记录的检索点进行规范化校验,通过实现标目的一致性,达到检索效率提升、目录汇集的目的。分析国外名称规范档的最新研究进展及实践,以期为中文名称规范档的发展研究提供借鉴。[方法/过程]通过对当前中文名称规范档建设存在的问题进行客观分析,结合国外名称规范档的研究进展及实践,提出中文名称规范档的建设发展方向。[结果/结论]当前中文名称规范档的建设存在着数据规模小、数据完全性差、数据共享性低问题,从国外名称规范档的发展看出,其不再局限于图书馆内部建设,开始向合作共建共享发展,规范数据不再面向OPAC系统,向开放互联发展。因此中文名称规范档的建设可从共建共享、构建新模型与规则、提升质量方面着手,发挥中文名称规范档在网络环境下的规范控制作用。     

浅议计算机编目中存在的问题及质量改进对策

对于任何一个图书馆而言，编目质量具有特别重要的意义。它不仅关系到对自身资源的管理和利用，更直接影响到该馆能否顺利实现联机编目。本文结合图书馆编目工作的情况，提出了保证计算机编目质量的一些具体措施。     

中文名称规范文档与虚拟国际规范文档的共享问题研究

随着规范控制工作的国际化,国际名称规范文档共建共享成为必然趋势。本文对影响名称规范文档共享的要素——名称规范文档遵循的编目规则、采用的描述格式和数据元素构成的差异进行分析,基于虚拟国际规范文档(VIAF)匹配思路,通过中国高等教育文献保障系统管理中心(CALIS)、香港中文名称规范数据库(HKCAN)和VIAF的数据匹配实验,分析当前国内规范文档存在的问题:名称规范文档记录不全,检索结果输出不按相关度排列,国内各机构对中国人名的拼音标目不规范。本文在控制规则、附加信息、数据模型等方面提出相应对策,以提高文档的共享效率,希望能为推动我国规范控制工作的国际化进程提供参考。图2。表4。参考文献19。     

The DeathFlip Project: Automating Death Date Revisions to Name Headings in Bibliographic Records

The 2005 revision of Library Congress Rule Interpretation 22.17, allowing the addition of death dates to personal name headings with open dates, had a significant impact on the maintenance of bibliographic records. The decision not to include open date forms as “see from” fields in revised authority records destined catalog maintenance staff to higher levels of manual review and editing. At Kent State University this prompted a search for better options and resulted in the creation of a shadow authority file intended solely for automated “flipping” of open date headings to the new forms. The file is available to other libraries for use and experimentation.     

UNIMARC Format Relevance: Maintenance or Replacement?

This article presents an empirical study focused on a qualitative analysis of the UNIMARC format. An analysis of the structural quality of the data provided by the format is evaluated to determine its current suitability for meeting the requirements and trends in data architecture for the information network and the Semantic Web. Driven by a set of quality characteristics that identify weaknesses in the data schema that cannot be bridged by simply converting data to MARC XML or RDF/XML, we conclude that the UNIMARC format is not compliant with the current metadata schema desiderata and must be replaced.     

近代广东海关档案名称规范档的语义模型构建

文章针对近代广东海关档案现存的语言、书写及专有名词不断变换问题,提出近代广东海关档案海关档案名称规范档的语义模型,为档案中多样化的相关名称表达提供数据规范。针对近代广东海关档案中不一致的名称,通过规范控制来分析其中的文字表征、发音特征以及相关的表达方式;参考《中国档案主题词表》及近代广东海关档案专有名词词典,从语义逻辑关系出发,构建近代广东海关档案名称规范数据的语义模型。近代广东海关档案名称规范数据语义模型的构建,不仅可以作为其他海关档案开发利用的参考框架,而且为进一步构建海关档案本体提供数据基础。
