This article presents the results of a survey examining and comparing the metadata practices of academic and non-academic libraries regarding digital projects. It explores the types of metadata and vocabularies utilized, issues of interoperability, end-user-created metadata, and staffing for metadata planning and creation. Participants from 87 academic libraries and 40 non-academic libraries responded to the survey. The survey found that, despite their different environments, academic and non-academic libraries engage in similar metadata practices. The majority of the participating libraries have metadata librarians, who are the primary staff members responsible for all metadata activities. Academic libraries tend to use more metadata schemes, plan for metadata interoperability more frequently, and are more likely to have created new positions responsible for metadata for digital projects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The historical clothing collections held by academic and other institutions serve as an important resource for scholars in fields ranging from fashion design to sociology. While metadata schemes have been created for individual clothing collections, no standard metadata scheme for clothing had been developed. This case study describes the creation of a linked data metadata scheme for clothing designed for the Oregon State University's College of Business Design Programs' Historical and Cultural Textile and Apparel Collection housed within the ScholarsArchive digital repository. In addition, the scheme can be used as a standard clothing metadata scheme which may be implemented by other organizations, or extended as needed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the search results of four main Internet search engines on three newly created digital collections at Texas Tech University Libraries, in order to assess the search engine indexing on metadata and PDF files of digital items that are published in the institutional repository. The exploratory study found that only one search engine discovered PDF files, while the others only discovered metadata. The results of the study also suggested that metadata and PDF files can supplement each other to facilitate discoverability of the digital collections on search engines, and revealed some findings that are contradictory to conclusions in previous research.  相似文献

Based on a set of web survey data, this study examines cataloging and metadata professionals' perspectives on issues surrounding continuing education. The results show that emerging data standards such as the Semantic Web and BIBFRAME, as well as metadata and digital library-related topics, are subject areas currently central to their professional concerns, in addition to RDA, for professional development. Topics such as ontologies, social tagging, and automatic metadata generation were rarely reported. Meaningful interactions were often found to be lacking in online education. The results provide evidence of the need to expand the pool of shared expertise to meet our collective needs for continuing education in the cataloging and metadata community.  相似文献

The report summarizes a presentation given at the 2015 NASIG conference. It outlines metadata used by Project CERES, a print preservation and digitization project supported by a partnership between the United States Agriculture Information Network and the Center for Research Libraries. It also outlines metadata guidelines used to disclose print holdings committed for preservation and provides tips on creating efficiencies in gathering the detailed issue level data and providing quality assurance for digitization. Gathering detailed metadata to support the preservation of print is an investment in the preservation of essential scholarly resources. Project CERES can be used as a model for other programs coupling preservation and digitization.  相似文献

[目的/意义]探讨资源发现系统元数据方面的问题与解决方案.[方法/过程]从元数据的视角,以当前国内应用最广的4家资源发现系统为研究对象,通过文献资料的收集和内容分析,并结合武汉大学图书馆资源发现系统的调研、测试与实施及电子资源元数据整合与管理的实践,分析当前发现系统的元数据在元数据仓储、元数据质量、元数据测评、服务与合作4个方面存在的问题.[结果/结论]指出资源发现系统的元数据问题不容忽视,并针对元数据描述、元数据仓储、元数据质量管理、元数据测评以及服务与合作5个方面提出解决问题的思考与建议.  相似文献

[目的/意义]数字资源粗放式的管理模式已经无法与高校图书馆精细化的信息服务需求相匹配,构建文献元数据仓储下的数字资源全新管理系统,完善基于元数据的数字资源采购协议及监管流程,并以此为基础建立多维度文献保障评估体系,将为高校图书馆信息服务质量的提升提供重要参考。[方法/过程]利用文献调研法和实例分析,探讨高校图书馆在数字资源管理和文献保障评估中的发展策略。[结果/结论]全新形式的细粒化数字资源管理为高校图书馆多维度文献保障评估提供基础,高校图书馆只有具备系统化、规范化的数字资源管理与评估体系,才可以顺应数字信息化的时代发展趋势,真正利用大数据分析助力高校教学和科研的发展建设。  相似文献

This article explores the development and automation of quality assurance procedures for locally loading electronic books (ebooks) on the Ontario Council of University Libraries’ Scholars Portal Platform. The authors conducted a two-phase study of MARC record fields indexed on the platform to detect errors and implement workflow changes to the quality control process. The authors report on this process and the costs involved and suggest that the challenges of ebook metadata are not met by MARC and a new metadata standard should be considered in the near future.  相似文献

Multifaceted evaluation studies of digital archives are important to understanding multiple aspects of user experience and improving the quality of the systems. This study provides an example of a formative evaluation of the community digital heritage archive. Using a multifaceted evaluation framework, the study focused on three aspects of the site relevant to users: interface, collections, and information organization. The study adopted a mixed-methods design with a questionnaire and interviews with community members. The findings indicate that in addition to a usable interface, the quality of objects, depth of metadata, contextual information, and coverage are important to users. The lack of representation of marginalized groups that were part of the community's history emerged as an important theme. The findings from the study were used to redesign the site and to expand the archive's coverage. This research also points to the need for evaluation models that focus on community-based criteria.  相似文献

以处理文献资源为基本目的的元数据标准(如Dublin Core,IMS and LOM)和专业置标语言(如MatML,MathML,CML,GML)近年来都在以前所未有的速度向前发展,然而其发展和应用却缺乏相互沟通和操作。数字图书馆建设过程中通常会遇到在不同水平上对文献处理的各种格式和方法进行选择与应用、这些格式和标准如何进行互操作等问题。本文分析用于描述文献资源的元数据和面向专业的置标语言在数字图书馆中对知识进行表述的特点和功能,讨论其在对一个资源作结构上和语义上的分解时的作用,指出元数据与置标语言结合的必要性,并提出在同一数字图书馆中将两者结合起来使用的可行方法。  相似文献

The Portal to Texas History (http://texashistory.unt.edu) and the University of North Texas (UNT) Digital Library (http://digital.library.unt.edu) contain more than 445,000 items collectively, hosted by the UNT Libraries. These collections include a variety of serial publications such as newsletters, magazines, scholarly journals, annual reports, and yearbooks. Many of these serials are key resources for the user groups of both repositories. In this article, we discuss the importance of serials within our collections, some of the challenges, the standards we use, and how we leverage metadata to facilitate access to serials for diverse global users.  相似文献

The authors review how access to historical aerial photograph collections has evolved in response to technological developments and addresses areas for further advancement, with a particular emphasis on developing, preserving, and sustaining online collections. The authors focus specifically on the areas of metadata, the Semantic Web and linked data, and sustainability through collaboration. The article includes brief case studies, highlighting various projects involving the aerial photography collections at the University of Minnesota. The conclusion asserts the critical role played by geographic information librarians in effectively carrying out the strategies described in the article as they relate to the long-term sustainability of digital geospatial collections.  相似文献

Digital repositories require good metadata, created according to community-based principles that include provisions for interoperability. When metadata is of high quality, digital objects become sharable and metadata can be harvested and reused outside of the local system. A sample of U.S.-based repository administrators from the OpenDOAR initiative were surveyed to understand aspects of the quality and creation of their metadata, and how their metadata could improve. Most respondents (65%) thought their metadata was of average quality; none thought their metadata was high quality or poor quality. The discussion argues that increased strategic staffing will alleviate many perceived issues with metadata quality.  相似文献

This article presents a case study of quality management issues for electronic resource metadata to assess the support of user tasks (find, select, and obtain library resources) and potential for increased efficiencies in acquisitions and cataloging workflows. The authors evaluated the quality of existing bibliographic records (mostly vendor supplied) for e-resource collections as compared with records for the same collections in OCLC's WorldShare Collection Manager (WCM). Findings are that WCM records better support user tasks by containing more summaries and tables of contents; other checkpoints are largely comparable between the two source record groups. 随着网络与信息技术的发展,近年来全国各地博物馆数字化建设进展迅速,数字博物馆日益受到各方面的关注。而数字博物馆相关元数据规范作为数字资源管理、开发与利用的基础,其规范化的进程却发展缓慢,成为数字博物馆资源共享和信息交换的瓶颈,严重影响了我国数字博物馆事业的长远可持续发展。另外我国博物馆藏品种类繁多且日趋丰富,藏品数字资源特点各异,决定了在数字博物馆系统中不可能采用一个元数据标准来满足所有资源描述的需求。综合以上两点考虑,文章提出了基于核心元数据的可扩展的三级数字博物馆元数据规范体系。接着研究核心元数据规范以及基于核心元数据的扩展规则。最后以基于核心元数据规范形成的古建筑专门元数据规范为例,表述了数字博物馆元数据规范扩展的方法与过程。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The University of South Florida Libraries house and provide access to a collection of cultural heritage and 3D digital models. In an effort to provide greater access to these collections, a linked data project has been implemented. A metadata schema for the 3D cultural heritage objects which uses linked data is an excellent way to share these collections with other repositories, thus gaining global exposure and access to these valuable resources. This article will share the process of building the 3D cultural heritage metadata model as well as an assessment of the model and recommendations for future linked data projects.  相似文献

Abstract

Users of geographic data may not be able to afford to purchase and implement a dataset that does not finally meet their needs. Therefore, metadata has a very important role in the information supply environment of geographic data. The development of national/local spatial data infrastructures recognizes the importance of metadata, as do the digital libraries providing spatial data.

The new ISO 19115:2003 standard of metadata for geographic information is introduced briefly. In particular, geographic information can be made available as digital maps (or images) that are meant for visual use, or as datasets meant for computational use. Metadata for digital maps is closely related to the metadata elements for conventional maps and can be enhanced by providing a sample map with the data. The case of computational use of geographic data is more complex. There are several details that may appear crucial when determining the fitness of data for an intended use. Understanding the importance of the crucial factors in each use case requires professional skills from the users of metadata.  相似文献
