Modified Hepburn Romanization System in Japanese Language Cataloging: Where to Look,What to Follow

The ALA-LC Romanization Table for Japanese instructs catalogers to consult multiple editions of Kenkyusha's New Japanese-English Dictionary and the American National Standard system concerning the Modified Hepburn romanization system. These resources and editions, however, not only vary in scope, but also present some conflicting policies, which may be hindering the operation of romanization. This study addresses the issues of Japanese romanization guidelines by clarifying what the Modified Hepburn system is, and analyzing the discrepancies among the guidelines. Selected romanization data in OCLC WorldCat records are also examined to see how this problem has affected the current practices.     

Single-Record versus Separate-Record Approaches for Cataloging E-Serials in the OCLC WorldCat Local Environment

Libraries have been making decisions on whether to use a single- or separate-record approach for cataloging e-serials based on what works best in their local library integrated systems and which approach is likely to save cataloging time. However, in the new network-level cataloging and OCLC WorldCat Local environment, we need to make cataloging decisions based on what works best in a network-level platform. This article discusses the OCLC WorldCat Local environment, the concept of network-level cataloging, and why Washington State University has responded by migrating from a single-record to separate-record cataloging policy for e-serials.     

Using OCLC WorldCat Language Indexes to Quantify Slavic and Eurasian Language Collections and Answer Complex Bibliographic Questions

The author presents strategies any librarian or researcher with access to OCLC WorldCat may use to answer many kinds of questions concerning foreign-language materials in their own or other libraries. These advanced searching strategies, some not obvious and some even hidden in the WorldCat interface, may also be used to help collection managers generate valuable information about their library’s collection strengths in specific languages, and by extension, make comparisons with collections at other institutions. Special attention is devoted to certain problems associated with Slavic and Eastern European languages.

Enhancing and Upgrading Records for Video Recordings in OCLC's WorldCat Database: One Participant's Experience at Texas A&M University

ABSTRACT

In 2002, Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries obtained a National Level Enhance authorization for the OCLC visual materials format, allowing TAMU catalogers to upgrade records for video recordings in OCLC's WorldCat database at all encoding levels. This article presents examples of typical changes made by one cataloger to video recording records that were either enhanced or upgraded to full-level at TAMU during the last five years. Common changes included: correcting information in the title and statement of responsibility, correcting date information, adding or correcting information in notes, and creating access points. Issues encountered relating to enhancing and upgrading records in this format are also discussed.     

Conversion of Catalog Records to Machine-Readable Form

The history of several major retrospective conversion projects is reviewed, selected problems are identified, and recommendations are offered for a national retrospective conversion program.     

WorldCat Local and Information Literacy Instruction: An Exploration of Emerging Teaching Practice

Since the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) unveiled its WorldCat Local library catalog discovery layer in 2008, library instructors have debated how to incorporate this tool into their teaching. WorldCat Local's faceted searching brings both educational benefits and unexpected challenges to the classroom. Instructors frequently hold formal and informal discussions on such topics as which search features are most effective during teaching and which patron groups benefit most from this tool. The authors of this article surveyed instruction librarians at U.S. academic libraries that are using WorldCat Local in order to gather and organize this feedback. This article presents the findings of this survey.     

Tracking the History of Romani Publications: Challenges Presented by Flawed Data

Romani is a language of northern Indic origin spoken natively by an estimated 2.5 million people, primarily in Eurasia but also in North America. The history of publication patterns in Romani has not been well documented. Extracting data about this history based on available information in large bibliographic databases such as OCLC WorldCat has been hampered by unfortunate misapplication of certain language codes, making it all but impossible to filter search results efficiently using Romani language as a parameter. The author discusses how he was able to correct much of this inaccurate data in OCLC WorldCat.     

An Environmental Scan of OCLC Alternatives: A Management Perspective

OCLC’s WorldCat now holds more than 320 million bibliographic records with some 2-plus billion holdings linked to the bibliographic records. The vast majority of the world’s libraries, archives, and museums rely on OCLC as the primary source for bibliographic records. Compared to all other options, OCLC is clearly the very large elephant in the room. OCLC provides a broad range of services, including WorldShare Metadata Services (cataloging); WorldShare Interlibrary Loan (sharing resources); WorldShare Management Services (cloud-based integrated library system); WorldCat Discovery Services; and CONTENTdm? (management of digital collections). This article explores the available options for obtaining cataloging records from alternative sources by considering four factors: breadth, quality, ease of use, and costs of use of the bibliographic database.     

Romani Language: Cataloging Ramifications for a Language in the Process of Standardization

In this article, the author discusses issues related to the cataloging of a language, Romani (or Romany), which is only in the twenty-first century beginning to achieve some degree of standardization. In his discussion, the author focuses on issues of Romani orthography, specifically a small number of unusual Unicode characters that may cause technical problems in certain automated cataloging environments, such as OCLC WorldCat, the OCLC cataloging client Connexion, and online library catalogs.     

授权影印版西文图书主要字段编目细则再探讨

授权影印版西文图书原则上作为西文文献编目,非专业性普及读物作为中文文献编目。本文结合MARC21和笔者的工作实践,探讨此类图书主要字段编目细则和注意事项,并就《CALIS联机合作编目手册例解(西文部分)》中的一些细则,提出修正意见和建议。     

论中外文图书的界定与国内版外文图书的采编工作

近年来,国内版图书的中外文文种界定日趋困难,同种图书在不同图书馆中文种界定不一致的情况十分普遍。通过图书实例探讨授权影印版外文图书及国内原版外文图书文种界定的复杂性和采编工作的应对措施。建议高校图书馆应改革按文种划分图书的管理模式,实行按学科类集各类型文献,中外文图书混合采编,混合馆藏排架等措施,逐步实现信息资源的整合共享。     

中文搜索引擎检索语言研究

中文搜索引擎在很大程度上满了用户检索中文网络信息资源的要求，但也存在检索效果不够理想等问题，本文人检索语言的角度对现有中文搜索引擎进行分析，指出将检索语言的原理与方法应用于中文搜索引擎，必然极大地提高搜索引擎的检索效率。     

The Establishment of a Library Networking Model for the Caribbean Region: A Delphi Study

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to propose a library networking model for the Caribbean region. In addition, the probability, desirability, and feasibility of developing and implementing the proposed model was assessed.

Three questionnaires were used for collecting the data. One was called the preliminary questionnaire; the second one consisted of the Delphi questionnaire, which was sent in two rounds; and the third, was the cross-impact questionnaire.

The analysis of responses to the three questionnaires were the major sources of input on the design of this prototype model. The major findings were: Almost all libraries were involved in some kind of cooperative activity involving other institutions. Interlibrary loans, exchange of professional information, and reference services were three major activities which are carried out by libraries, both at the local level and based on informal arrangements. Eighteen institutions reported that they were engaged in computer activities with other libraries. Responses indicated that a wide array of materials exist and that a good portion is in English. Other languages represented were French, Spanish, Dutch, Papiamento, and German. There is a variety of materials found in library collections in the Caribbean region.

The classification schemes used are DDC–the most widely used; followed by LC. The AACR II is used by 82.5 percent of the institutions participating in the study.

All respondents, except one, agreed that there is a need for a networking structure in the Caribbean. Inadequate funding of library and information services was the major obstacle to the development and implementation of a library network. Absence of planning and lack of library legislation were two other impediments mentioned. The responses to the two rounds of Delphi questionnaires provided information with regard to the probability, desirability, and feasibility of the occurrence of the events presented to the participants. In general, experts agreed with all the components that were proposed in the questionnaires. The components for the proposed structure include objectives, functions, governance structure, composition of the network structure, types of members, funding and financing sources, type of structure, and operational requirements of the network.     

伪满时期东北地区日文期刊考略

20世纪上半叶,伪满东北地区日文期刊曾是日本对东北三省殖民统治和文化侵略的工具。而今这一时期的期刊已成为研究东北近代史文献的重要组成部分。笔者在对这一时期大量日文期刊进行调研和整理的基础上,就伪满时期东北地区日文期刊的产生、发行概况及部分重要期刊作以简要的考证和介绍,希望对相关问题的研究能有所借鉴和参考。
