A Collaborative Web

Abstract

The content of a law library's website is often developed as part of reference services. Overall design, development, and management of the website, however, may be better addressed independent of content. Overall website management may reside in different areas in different libraries. This article shares experiences at the University at Buffalo Law Library, where the placement of website management within technical services has allowed for increased collaboration across all departments.     

Catalogers Unite! Creating Documentation through Collaboration

Recent changes have forced Bowling Green State University (BGSU) to reevaluate our documentation, workflows, and communication. There have been staff retirements, changes in staff responsibilities, and a new faculty cataloger. Additionally, BGSU is implementing a discovery layer, purchasing shelf-ready books, and adding more electronic resources. It has become apparent that documentation needs to be updated and, in many cases, created from scratch. Collaboration is critical as catalogers are currently few in number and are seeing the need to work with other departments in ways unheard of previously. The creation of a new cataloging manual is vital to the success of cataloging at BGSU.

目前,利用Web技术搭建在线信息素养教育平台,通过平台对学生进行信息素养教育已成为世界各国高校在信息素养教育教学方面所采用的主流教学方式。与国外高校相比,我国高校在在线信息素养教育教学方面存在不少问题,在分析目前我国高校图书馆在在线信息素养教育方面存在的相关问题的基础上,论述了基于Web2.0高校图书馆在线信息素养教育平台的构建。     

高校图书馆互动式网站建设调查

文章调查了国内20所高校图书馆互动式网站建设情况,发现高校图书馆网站建设中或多或少都融入了不同方式的互动。特别是在信息技术高速发展的今天,Web2.0技术在图书馆网站建设中也逐渐被采用,由此不仅网站风格有了新变化,而且改变了图书馆传统网站的服务模式,能够吸引更多的读者使用图书馆。     

Assessing the Impact of Cloud Computing and Web Collaboration on the Work of Distance Library Services

ABSTRACT

Cloud computing and Web collaboration are shaping 21st-century libraries. These 2 developments seem to be behind the newest developments in library services and are driving library automation. The 2 are impacting library work by providing the library administrator with opportunities, especially for greater synergies among various individuals over dispersed locations. While the literature indicates ambivalence about these twin developments among library and information professionals, the administrators of distance library services have no choice but to engage in the use of cloud computing technologies and Web collaboration in order to remain relevant to users. Unfortunately, in doing this, distance services librarians will need to trade off ownership and control, trusting outsiders, while teaching users to be critical of the information gathered from collaborative sources.     

Embedded Library Services: From Cooperation to Collaboration to Enhance Student Learning in Asynchronous Online Course

The online environment presents a unique challenge to higher education. Shifting from the face- to-face format to online not only involves rethinking course design, but requires careful consideration of when and how to teach students, how to find and evaluate information needed to successfully complete coursework. One solution is faculty teaming with subject librarians to design and build in teachable moments. This case study discusses one such successful partnership from designing the course to choosing and embedding library resources and finally to the learning outcome of the online course.     

华北地区高校图书馆网络互动服务调查研究

Web2.0的出现和广泛使用,使网络互动的概念深入人心,对图书馆网络互动服务的研究逐渐引起了学者们的关注。以华北地区高校图书馆网络互动服务为研究对象,对高校图书馆网络互动平台的搭建情况和网络互动服务项目开展现况进行调查。华北地区高校图书馆网络互动服务发展不均衡,北京和天津市高校图书馆网站建设水平和互动服务开展情况较好,OPAC服务和参考咨询服务是最为普遍的互动服务项目。高校图书馆需从平台建设、深化互动服务功能、人员队伍等方面切实提高网络互动服务的质量与水平。     

Lib2.0环境下高校图书馆的读者组织

Web2.0的出现极大地改变了大学生的学习方式,同时也给高校图书馆带来了严重的读者流失问题,加强读者组织工作是解决这一问题的有效办法。

University Libraries and Academic Strategic Planning at the University of Cincinnati

As part of a broadly defined academic strategic planning initiative at the University of Cincinnati, the Libraries developed a five-year plan. This article describes the process including its successes and failures, documents the most positive outcomes resulting from the process, and raises several issues related to university-wide planning processes.

The Implementation of a Renewal-Limits Policy at University Libraries,Northern Illinois University

Abstract

In 1991, the University Libraries of Northern Illinois University implemented a revised policy for renewals of library materials. Various system, staff, and patronrelated concerns required the access services department to adapt to immediate demands, then to seek longterm solutions. This case study examines the initial impact of the new policy, corrections, and new procedures that were adopted over time. It also examines ongoing issues related to renewals policy.

Collaboration in Electronic Resource Provision in University Libraries: SHEDL,a Scottish Case Study

This case study examines the growth of collaboration among Scottish higher education institutions. Following a summary of the work of the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries (SCURL), more detailed information is provided on collaboration in the fields of acquisition, licensing, selection, and purchasing. Some of the UK background is outlined, relating to NESLi2 in particular, in order to illuminate the options within Scotland. The origins of negotiations on electronic resource provision within Scotland are described, drawing on developments in other countries including Ireland and Scandinavia. After initial setbacks, the implementation of the Scottish Higher Education Digital Library (SHEDL) from 2007 to 2009 is detailed. Current benefits arising from SHEDL are explained, and some possible future developments are discussed.

通过调查研究,初步了解了西安地区普通高校多校区图书馆管理的现状,并分析了其管理存在的问题,最后提出了多校区图书馆的管理对策。     

Developing Best Practices for Technical Services Cross-Institutional Collaboration

The OhioLINK CollaboraTeS Project was initiated to support cross-institutional collaborations by building a skills inventory and by defining collaborative best practices. This article discusses what was learned and defines best practices for collaboration. The authors recommend the creation of regional technical services skills inventories, and the application of management and financial best practices to collaborations. Librarians should be confident they possess these skills because many of them have been learned in other environments. Collaboration represents a bright future for libraries struggling to meet tight budgets. Providing the tools and best practices for collaboration makes it easier for libraries to participate.

A Web 2.0 Catalog and Document Delivery: Hold this for me at Western Michigan University

This article details the implementation of an electronic request service that allows users to register item requests directly from the OPAC without re-typing the bibliographic information and at no cost. This project supports the overall efforts of the university by furthering the Western Michigan University strategic plan to implement a user-friendly document delivery service. This article describes this innovative and easy way to access a reservation list to retrieve library items by implementing customized web-based management using MySQL and Voyager Oracle? backend. The advantage of a web-based management system is its ease of use and highly customizable features. Some statistics on the number of requests from 2008–2011 are also included.
