The paper provides the results of the first phase of the research project Trust and Authority in Scholarly Communications in the Light of the Digital Transition. It provides for an examination of the behaviours and attitudes of academic researchers as producers and consumers of scholarly information resources in the digital era in respect to how they determine authority and trustworthiness in the sources they use, cite, and publish in. The first phase of the study utilized focus groups to formulate research questions for the project as a whole. It provided the direction for the literature review, interviews, and questionnaires studies that would follow. Fourteen focus groups were held in the UK and US in order to obtain this information. A total of 66 science and social science researchers participated. The main findings were: (a) researchers play down difficulties of establishing trustworthiness, not because there are none, but because they have well‐developed methods of establishing trust; (b) citation‐derived metrics are becoming more important in regard to where researchers publish; (c) social media are ancillary to research, but are used for promotion of research and idea generation; (d) researchers are suspicious and confused about open access, but less so if produced by a traditional publisher; (e) there was a uniformity of perceptions/behaviour of researchers irrespective of differences in subject, country, and age; (f) although some early career researchers behave the same as their more senior colleagues this is because of a fear of the system: they actually think differently.  相似文献

A sample of Australian journals in the natural and social sciences has been analysed with regard to their editorial procedures, costs, revenues, marketing, production methods and general well-being. The analysis shows that many scholarly journals have problems with management, marketing and distribution, and do not cover their costs. Most journals are increasingly subsidized by members of their parent societies or from other sources, and their longer-term future is unclear. The separation in most societies of the editing function from the policy and financial functions is thought to contribute to this situation, which in many cases is simply not yet recognized by those closest to it.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The move to electronic forms of communication has changed the way educational research is communicated. In particular, it has led to an increased reliance on journals. This change has been more precipitous than one might expect. As journals become a larger proportion of the body of current scholarship, authors and readers seek new methods of determining and communicating journal quality. Methods that have worked for researchers in the sciences are not directly transferable to the education discipline. This paper examines existing tools and looks for new methods of assessing quality in journal publishing. This article was developed from a paper presented at the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE) conference in Spring 2007.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The three presentations in this session provide an introduction to the economic challenges faced by small scholarly publishers. The first talk reviews trends in the library market and publishing trends of increased monopolization; the second describes the demands of technological innovation; and the final talk presents a budgetary case study from a medium-sized society publisher evaluating the impact of dropping the production of print journals. After the three talks, a list of eight recommendations for alleviating the pressure on small publishers was presented for audience discussion. The three speakers are all active in the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) and invite a closer collaboration with NASIG. Kasdorf is a Past President and Ivins and Seitter are Board members. This article summarizes the methodology and findings of the Online Catalogue and Repository Interoperability Study (OCRIS), a project recently carried out by the Centre for Digital Library Research at the University of Strathclyde, funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). In the context of the Online Public Access Catalogs (OPAC) and the recent development of the Institutional Repository (IR) within Higher Education Institutions in the United Kingdom, it considers issues of metadata quality, name authority control, and standardized subject headings, as well as departmental and institutional workflows. It also considers duplication and scope overlap within institutions with more than one IR.  相似文献
