Teaching quantitative subjects such as operations management (OM) can be quite challenging. In this article, we present a novel approach that uses simplified concept maps for teaching OM. This application of concept maps was investigated to determine if it helps students to answer questions and to solve OM problems more effectively. Our study used a controlled experimental design with students divided into two groups, one taught using concept maps and another group taught using traditional techniques. Student learning was measured with pre‐ and posttests consisting of both multiple‐choice and constructed‐response items. The performance of the two groups was compared using an independent samples t‐test and analysis of covariance to control for the covariate “pretest.” The results indicate that use of simplified concept mapping significantly improved student learning of OM course material. We therefore recommend its adoption as an active‐learning pedagogical technique that can lead to positive change in the OM classroom.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of a shared concept-mapping task on high school students' learning about kinematics in a collaborative simulation-based inquiry setting. Pairs of students were randomly assigned to a concept-mapping condition (12 pairs) or a control condition (13 pairs). Students in the concept-mapping condition had a computer-supported collaborative concept-mapping tool that aimed to integrate concepts and propositions. Students in the control condition used the same learning environment without the concept-mapping tool. Students' interactions with each other and with the simulation were tracked by log files. Learning was assessed with tests of intuitive and structural knowledge and a proposition test. Students in the concept-mapping condition exchanged significantly more chat messages related to experimentation, interpretation, and drawing conclusions and were more engaged in integration-oriented consensus building, which regression analysis showed to be positively related to learning gains for both intuitive and structural knowledge. Students in the concept-mapping condition outperformed their peers on the intuitive and structural knowledge tests. These results suggest that concept maps can positively influence consensus-building activities and learning in a collaborative inquiry-learning setting. The findings of the current study thereby contribute to the ongoing debate about (shared) graphical representations as scaffolds for collaborative learning.  相似文献

In this study we use concept maps as the tool for examining concepts presented in three high school computer textbooks. All three textbooks were endorsed by Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE). The concepts relating to CPU was selected as a sample for analysis. Two high school computer teachers first worked independently and then together to draw concept maps for each of the textbooks. Our analysis revealed that the textbooks did not cover the important concepts appropriately and failed to address the connections between the concepts. While all three textbooks elaborated on some concepts using examples, only a few analogies were used. The study also showed that concept maps can be an effective tool for analyzing the conceptual framework of important concepts within a textbook.  相似文献

Generalizability theory provides a conceptual and statistical framework for estimating variance components and measurement precision. The theory has been widely used in evaluating technical qualities of performance assessments. However, estimates of variance components, measurement error variances, and generalizability coefficients are likely to vary from one sample to another. This study empirically investigates sampling variability of estimated variance components using data collected in several years for a listening and writing performance assessment. This study also evaluates stability of estimated measurement precision from year to year. The results indicated that the estimated variance components varied from one study to another, especially when sample sizes were small. The estimated measurement error variances and generalizability coefficients also changed from one year to another. Measurement precision projected by a generalizability study may not be fully realized in an actual decision study. The study points out the importance of examining variability of estimated variance components and related statistics in performance assessments.  相似文献

Concept mapping is a technique that paves the way to represent knowledge schematically. In this research, concept mapping was used as an assessment method on the impulse–momentum topic. The purpose of this study was to determine teacher candidates’ knowledge about understanding of the concepts of impulse and momentum by comparing and contrasting two different methods; namely, students’ concept maps and an achievement test. The mean of teacher candidates’ concept map scores are extremely low when compared with the scores of the achievement test. In addition, it was seen that although a great number of concepts were written down, not many relationships were established between these concepts. There is a weak correlation between the achievement test and the concept map scores since concept maps assess the students’ knowledge from a conceptual perspective while the achievement tests measure the level of students’ knowledge on the topic and his/her ability to apply this knowledge on different occasions.  相似文献

概念图是一种有效的知识可视化工具,而概述图的布局是影响其信息传递能力的重要因素,因此布局算法是实现概念图工具的重要技术基础.本文在Sugiyama层次布局算法的基础上,针对概念图的特点和布局要求,提出了一种概念图的布局算法:首先对概念图的概念节点和关系节点进行简化处理,然后应用Sugiyama层次布局算法的第一步(分层),并对图中的关系节点进行特殊处理,调整分层,最后应用Sugiyama层次布局算法的“交叉减少”和“坐标分配”模块,得出概念图各个节点(包括概念节点、关系节点和虚拟节点)的坐标,最终得出概念图的布局.该算法已通过编程实现,并成功应用于我们自主研发的概念图工具软件中.  相似文献

在主观评价的结果分析中,方差分析能够分辨出参与主观评价人员的个体特征对评价结果的影响,从而更真实地反映出车辆之间的真实差异.使用SPSS软件,采用方差分析的统计学方法,对4款轿车的悬架舒适性主观评价结果进行分析.结果表明,驾龄在4~15年之间的人员,更能够得到相对一致的评分结果,过高和过低的驾龄,会导致评分的过高和过低.驾龄没有与车型之间产生交互作用,可以排除驾龄与车型对评价结果的交互影响.  相似文献

A concept map is a node-link diagram in which each node represents a concept and each link identifies the relationship between the two concepts it connects. We investigated how using concept maps influences learning by synthesizing the results of 142 independent effect sizes (n = 11,814). A random-effects model meta-analysis revealed that learning with concept and knowledge maps produced a moderate, statistically significant effect (g = 0.58, p < 0.001). A moderator analysis revealed that creating concept maps (g = 0.72, p < 0.001) was associated with greater benefit relative to respective comparison conditions than studying concept maps (g = 0.43, p < 0.001). Additional moderator analyses indicated learning with concept maps was superior to other instructional comparison conditions, and was effective across science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and non-STEM knowledge domains. Further moderator analyses, as well as implications for theory and practice, are provided.  相似文献

An animated concept map is a presentation of a network diagram in which nodes and links are sequentially added or modified. An experiment compared learning from animated concept maps and text by randomly assigning 133 undergraduates to study 1 of 4 narrated animations presenting semantically equivalent information accompanied by identical audio narration. Two of the animations presented text; one with concurrent audio and another with delayed audio. Two of the animations presented concept maps; one in black and white and the other with nodes colored to represent semantic relatedness. The concept map groups outperformed the text groups on free recall (p < .05). The black-and-white concept map group outperformed the text groups on a multiple-choice knowledge test (p < .05). No advantages were statistically detected for color enhancements of the animated map. The results indicate that verbal information can be effectively communicated by learner-paced animated concept maps accompanied by audio narrations.  相似文献
