The high esteem in which Harvard's Nieman Fellowships are held by the journalism fraternity recently prompted the establishment of a similar program for broadcasters. The initiative was taken by CBS Foundation Inc., the agency for making educational and charitable grants on behalf of CBS, Inc. and its divisions. The Foundation announced the inauguration of an annual program of CBS Foundation News and Public Affairs Fellowships at Columbia University. Since the program has now completed its first year of operation, it seemed appropriate to publish a special progress report in the Journal.  相似文献

Does media ownership affect the editorial page? Scholars such as Tim Groseclose, Jeffrey Milyo, and Tim Groeling have offered recent empirical tests for media bias in political news coverage. This article focuses on the editorial content of newspapers to examine whether a change in publishers affects a newspaper's editorial page's support for government action on public policy questions, the attention given to the major political parties, and the tone of coverage of the parties. Our content analyses compare the Wall Street Journal's editorial page before and after Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation purchased the paper with two newspapers that did not change ownership structures over the same time period (New York Times and Washington Times). We show that Murdoch's Wall Street Journal is far less supportive of government intervention in the economy, much more negative to Democrats, and much more positive to Republicans than the paper's editorial page was under Bancroft family ownership. We also show that the Wall Street Journal's changes were unique as the New York Times and Washington Times generally did not exhibit similar changes to their own editorial pages.  相似文献

This column describes the Research Review Competition, a program developed by the Library at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York to promote research and writing skills. The Competition, which since 1980 has recognized well-written research papers that reflect mastery of library research skills, is a success with students and faculty, and highlights the library's role in the academic process.  相似文献

University librarians at the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY), in response to a new requirement for an information literacy component in the University's general education program, formed a committee to create a credit course. The committee was able to work collaboratively and cohesively to quickly create a successful and flexible information literacy course. The committee's progress as they worked through this challenge is described, and the benefits resulting from this approach are examined.  相似文献

This article examines the educational and social impact of an instructional radio program, called the Music Appreciation Hour (MAH), broadcast on the NBC network from the 1920s to the 1940s. Walter Damrosch, who came from a musical family and had previously conducted the New York Symphony, envisioned the possibility to use radio to teach music to American schoolchildren by tapping into its aural and emotional qualities. Through archival materials, including correspondence, teachers’ manuals, student notebooks, and program evaluations, it is argued that while Damrosch positioned himself with a new progressive movement that espoused student-centered education, he instead became an appealing on-air “personality” to student listeners and the network. This research serves as an important example of some of the ongoing tensions between education, entertainment, and the mass media.  相似文献

This study aims to explore second-level agenda-setting at the national level. In particular, it examines the relationships among the citation bias of the New York Times, national level public opinion, and Congressional policies from 1956 to 2004 in order to better understand mass media's role in national policymaking. In addition, it also tests one important intervening variable of the relationships among the three attribute agendas (the media agenda, the public agenda, and the policy agenda)—the president's policy liberalism.  相似文献

Television entertainment plays an important role in the development of political orientations concerning authority, order, freedom and equality. This article shows that viewers have “limited autonomy” in constructing meaning from television entertainment. Q‐method was employed to determine viewer's subjective reactions to an episode of Law and Order that fictionalized a racial incident that took place in Brooklyn, New York in 1991. The analysis revealed that there were at least seven distinct readings of the program. While there was consensus about some aspects of the story, viewers obviously had some autonomy regarding interpretation. We argue for a synthesis of theories that emphasize “closed” and “open” meanings of television programs. Entertainment is politically relevant and the most useful way to examine its impact is through intensive methods.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the fall of 2000, the State University of New York College at Geneseo implemented an electronic reserve system. After a successful pilot of this system in the spring of 2000 with four academic departments, it was fully implemented for all departments on campus. This paper describes the program selected, the procedures used, and how students, faculty and staff reacted to the new system.

SUNY Geneseo is a primarily residential campus located in the village of Geneseo, 30 miles south of Rochester, New York. There are over 5,600 students, most of whom are full-time undergraduates, and 350 faculty, 260 of whom are full time. The curriculum consists of 47 undergraduate majors, 6 master's degree programs, and 24 interdisciplinary minors programs.  相似文献
