The author discusses a project called "The Sunflower Symposium," named in honor of Simon Wiesenthal's The Sunflower (1998). The project was a catalyst for discussions on legalized discrimination, the infringement of civil rights, (in)justice, (in)tolerance, and civic responsibility, influencing students to connect the Holocaust to other world events. It proved an effective pedagogic method for examining critically and taking action on important global issues. Evidence of the effectiveness of this message is presented and suggestions for integrating literature into courses are offered.  相似文献

In France, training in engineering was exclusively provided by the ‘Grandes Ecoles’. In this context, the French universities have been developing engineering training alongside traditional training courses. The growth in engineering training has been particularly important during the last five years. The author describes the conditions of the setting up and the nature of the different training courses and gives an evaluation after the first twenty years of their existence. Oregon State University became one of the first research universities in the United States to introduce the Total Quality Management methodology into its administrative structure in 1989. Beginning with finance and administration, quality improvement teams were introduced and achieved significant improvement in process effectiveness and efficiency. Improved quality was also achieved and measured by customer satisfaction.TQM was expanded to all administrative areas — including student affairs, research, and faculty administration — over the next four years. TQM has also been used in curriculum development, teaching improvement, and research proposal development.This paper describes the implementation strategy used by Oregon State University and presents some of the results achieved. Particular attention is paid to implementation barriers found in university settings.Today, Oregon State University has over 85 process improvement teams working in both administrative and academic areas and has received many awards for its work in Total Quality Management.  相似文献

This article discusses the contributions of modern universities to civil society in the light of recent university reforms in western European countries. It seeks to position modern higher education reforms based on New Public Management ideas into three different contexts: the normative ideals surrounding university activity, the organizational ideals related to university governance, and finally, the actual recent reform processes and their implications for civil society. A central idea in the following analysis is that the university makes its primary contribution to civil society in its capacity as a cultural institution. The article concludes with a discussion of the conditions under which such a contribution may be sustained.  相似文献

As a society, we realize that the profound issues facing us cannot be addressed by any individual or profession alone. By tracing the 25-year history of the Interprofessional Commission of Ohio at The Ohio State University, this article illustrates how collaboration among the helping professions, academics, individual citizens, and community agencies and organizations offers the best hope for meeting the challenge of improving human conditions in our increasingly complex world. This article chronicles the development of the Commission from its inception as a vision to its present form, describes the evolution of the program from a client-centered focus to one that now embraces a community-based approach, and concludes with a brief look at some challenges facing collaborative programs in the new millennium.
