Analytical modeling for corrosion-induced cover cracking of corrosive reinforced concrete structures

An analytical model for predicting the corrosion-induced cracking of concrete cover of reinforced concrete(RC) structures was developed.The effects of influence factors such as practical initial defects,corrosion rate,strength and elastic modulus of concrete on the corrosion-induced cracking of concrete cover were investigated.It was found that the size of practical initial defects was the most effective factor.Therefore,improving the compactness of concrete is an effective way to improve the durability of RC structures.It was also demonstrated that the accelerated corrosion tests may be unfavorable in the study of the relationship between cracking time and crack width.

Automatic damage detection of engineering ceramics ground surface based on texture analysis

Ground textures seriously interfere with the exact identification of grinding damage. The common nondestructive testing techniques for engineering ceramics are limited by their difficulty and cost. Therefore, this paper proposes a global image reconstruction scheme in ground texture surface using Fourier transform (FT). The lines associated with high-energy frequency components in the spectrum that represent ground texture information can be detected by Hough transform (HT), and the corresponding high-energy frequency components are set to zero. Then the spectrum image is back-transformed into the spatial domain image with inverse Fourier transform (IFT). In the reconstructed image, the main ground texture information has been removed, whereas the surface defects information is preserved. Finally, Canny edge detection is used to extract damage image in the reconstructed image. The experimental results of damage detection for the ground texture surfaces of engineering ceramics have shown that the proposed method is effective.     

Maximum relative displacement of adjacent buildings during ground motions

In order to give the reasonable width of seismic gaps to prevent the structural pounding during ground motions,the maximum relative displacement of adjacent structures is studied in this paper.The factors that may have effects on the maximum relative displacement are discussed.As for multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) systems,they can be equivalent to single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) systems with the influences of high modes neglected.The results show that the period ratio,height ratio and peak ground acceleration are the main factors that have great effects on the maximum relative displacement of adjacent structures.The maximum relative displacement of MDOF systems can be obtained from calculating the maximum relative displacement of the equivalent SDOF systems.

Equivalent response estimation of structural systems subjected to long-period ground motion

Long-period ground motion has become an important consideration because of the increasing number of large and long-period structures. Therefore, a thorough investigation on the formation and characteristics of longperiod ground motion is desirable for engineering applications. In this work, an analytical study is performed to examine the effect of several parameters and the combining mode for equivalent harmonic components on the dynamic response of systems. The results of the work show that the harmonic components in equivalent ground motion are evidently influenced by the intensity rise time, duration, phase and combining mode. Moreover, the long-period ground motions are simplified and simulated by separate harmonic components through proper combination. The findings of the work are believed to be useful in the selection of input ground motion in structural seismic analysis.
