Rethinking the use of Multi-User Virtual Environments in education

ABSTRACT

Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) have gained more prominence in education of late; however, the question of their theoretically sound implementation remains relatively understudied. The current article addresses this gap through the explanation of how a MUVE platform Second Life was used in an undergraduate course for pre-service teachers. Instructional decisions are explained within a theoretical framework of Open Source Educative Processes and are illustrated by specific multiple data sources. Based on the semester-long observations, the authors argue that Second Life can be used to create independent learning communities that have possibilities for transformative learning, creating contexts in which students move beyond simple understanding and engage multiple perspectives in their meaning-making processes. The authors explain the potential instructional and technological pitfalls involved and how to deal with them through a micro-analytic Open Source methodology, and raise broader philosophical questions about the role of technology in education.

Reconceptualised life skills in secondary education in the African context: Lessons learnt from reforms in Ghana

Early notions of life skills in Africa did not take into account the importance of a flexible and portable set of skills that would enable youth to adapt to changes in the world of work and lay the foundations for productive well-being and behaviour. Rather, life skills education in many secondary education curricula in Africa started with an emphasis on developing specific technical vocational skills considered essential for employability or self-employment. Using Ghana as an example, this paper shows how secondary education curriculum reformers recommended shifts that embraced a new interpretation of life skills focused on 21st-century skills. This gradual move also reflected the difficulty that secondary education in general has had in networking with the world of work to provide work experience that would lead to the development of work-related skills and enhance employability. The author’s main argument is that although the reconceptualisation of life skills in secondary education to reflect 21st-century skills is a welcome shift in the African context, this needs to be accompanied by reforms in teacher education. Classroom teaching and learning need to be adapted in a fundamental way in order to ensure that youth fully benefit from the inclusion of 21st-century life skills in secondary education curricula. Such reforms must include pedagogical practices which nurture communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills.

西方大学"开放教育资源运动"研究

近年来,一场致力于通过互联网络来提供免费教育资源的"开放教育资源"(OER)运动正在西方高校中悄然兴起.本文以OER为主题,介绍了其历史渊源和发展状况.研究者将OER分为"开放标准"、"开放内容"与"开源软件"三个部分,并以"开源软件"为代表,介绍了西方大学中的发展及应用情况.开放教育资源运动为我国高校的信息化发展提供了一个契机,值得学习和借鉴.     

Becoming a Design Thinker: Assessing the Learning Process of Students in a Secondary Level Design Thinking Course

Design thinking is a collaborative problem solving and human‐centric approach that fosters innovation by elevating participants’ creative thinking abilities. Design thinking techniques and practices have been implemented into different curricula in secondary and post‐secondary education to address the need for new skills to be learned for the twenty‐first century. However, little work has been conducted to clarify how to evaluate the students’ design thinking skills gained in these courses. This study reports on a successful evaluation of an interaction design thinking curriculum in secondary level education. Several types of data sources, including participant observation, open‐ended questions and document analysis were employed to gather extensive data on students’ skills gained during the course. The results of the study inform design thinking researchers about how to evaluate design thinking skills of students in a secondary level design thinking course.

21世纪的学校教育面临着新的形势。独生子女成为学生的主体；互联网的出现、国际形势的复杂化以及教育本身的发展变化等，为学校教育提出了新的课题。在这样的新形势下，作为学校的校长要游刃有余地办好学校必须具备良好的政治素质、良好的个人素质、良好的文化素质、很强的责任心素质和良好的心理素质。     

英语第二课堂教学环境下学生素质教育的培养

随着素质教育的推行,英语第二课堂教学活动被看成是学生素质提高的重要过程。该教学活动所培养的学生素质主要包括知识素质、能力素质与个性思想品德,这三种素质是21世纪复合型英语专业人才所应该具备的素质。同时,英语第二课堂教学又是培养复合型英语专业人才综合素质因素比较丰富而全面的教学过程,在这一教学过程中进行英语专业学生综合素质的培养,既十分必要,又具有很多有利的条件,能够充分体现现代英语教育的功能和重要性。     

Open educational practices for curriculum enhancement

Open educational resources (OER) and open educational practices (OEP) are relatively new areas in educational research. How OER and OEP can help practitioners enhance curricula is one of a number of under-researched topics. This article aims to enable practitioners to identify and implement appropriate open practices to enhance higher education curricula. To that aim, we put forward a framework of four open educational practices based on patterns of OER reuse (‘as is’ or adapted), mapped against the processes of curriculum design and delivery. The framework was developed from the in-depth analysis of 20 cases of higher education practitioners, which revealed patterns of OER reuse across disciplines, institutions and needs. For each open practice we offer evidence, examples and ideas for application by practitioners. We also put forward recommendations for institutional policies on OER and OEP.

开放大学功能的发挥离不开兼职教师队伍,本文立足开放性的内涵,提出开放大学兼职教师队伍新型建设观。文章根据开放教育的特点和现实状况,对开放大学兼职教师队伍群体角色进行五维转型定位,提出建设五型兼职教师的概念;同时聚焦政策性、使用性和情感性开发,探讨开放大学兼职教师队伍转型发展的路径。     

The Internet in Kinesiology and Physical Education

Throughout America the click of computer keys is replacing the scratch of pencils. Properly used, technology increases students' learning opportunities, motivation, and achievement; it helps students acquire skills that are rapidly becoming essential in the workplace; and it breaks the barriers of time and space, enabling students in any community to have access to high-quality instruction.

The Internet is developing at an astounding rate. It will become the primary means of communication in the 21st century. An overview of the Internet, with applications in kinesiologylphysical education, is presented in this paper. The following topics are discussed: (a) What is the Internet; (b) The origin of the Internet; (c) Elements of the Internet; and (d) Emerging technologies.     

课程开放：开放大学人才培养模式转型的重要标志

当前,广播电视大学正在向开放大学转型的进程中,进一步推进课程类型和内容、教学手段和方法的开放,整合优质教育资源,促进学习资源的共建共享,是办好开放大学迫切需要解决的问题。以中央广播电视大学于2000-2011年开展的课程开放试点为例,总结其基本经验和困扰的问题,同时通过对21世纪以来席卷全球的大学课程开放现象进行分析,特别是对可能导致高等教育现有人才培养模式发生深刻变革的大规模开放在线课程的典型案例进行比较,从中发现当前全球大学课程开放的趋势与走向,并提出开放大学进一步做好课程开放的对策。     

开放大学的发展历程与重心位移

开放大学是在以现代信息技术为支撑,以实体综合性大学为依托,在开放的公共教育环境下以满足学习者各种类型及层次的教育需求为目标,既坚持高等教育学历提升,又积极推进非学历继续教育及公共教育服务支持的开放性高等教育机构。作为一种新型的高等教育机构,开放大学促进了世界高等教育的民主化和公平化,也将终身教育的理念推行至实处。开放大学的质量保障涉及多个因素,要在学生、教师、课程和良好的师生互动等方面进行严格把关。开放大学不仅仅应该充当一种新型的教育机构,更应该成为一种无形的教育理念贯穿于有形的教育机构中。鼓励开放大学与传统大学走向融合,这将会为高等教育全民化的到来作出更大的贡献。

日本放送大学通过多样化的教学形式、多渠道的社会经济支持、良好的人文关怀服务和信息技术支持等手段,持续为日本国民提供安全稳定、自由开放的教育机会.作为一所承担日本国民职业教育、继续教育、终身教育重任的开放大学,坚持利用电视、收音机、网络等远程多媒体为学习者提供接受大学教育的渠道,在一定程度上促进了教育公平,解决了教育资源分布不均等问题.日本放送大学从学习者需求出发,深化课程改革,组建教师队伍中的专家团队,为学习者提供高效的信息技术服务,这对我国远程教育的改革发展具有一定的借鉴意义:应为学习者提供多样化的学习支持服务,建立资源共享理念,不断完善国家立法和规范办学管理流程,才能建立完善的终身教育体系.     

Gamers and gaming context: Relationships to critical thinking

Gaming is purported to hold promise for education, in part, because it is thought to develop 21st century skills such as critical thinking. To date, there has been a dearth of generalisable research investigating the relationship between gaming and critical thinking. Results of a survey of 121 adults found that gamers and non‐gamers do not differ significantly on critical thinking dispositions. However, gamers who play strategy games scored higher on actively open‐minded thinking than did other types of gamers. In addition, low compared with high involvement in the gaming community was associated with higher open‐minded thinking. Implications for educators and for further research are discussed.     

海南省本科学历小学教师培养方案研究
