A study was conducted by the Acquisitions Department of Hunter Library at Western Carolina University of the eleven American book dealers used regularly by the department. The purpose of this study was to evaluate their performance in relation to our library's needs in order to determine which of those companies studied would receive the bulk of our future orders. As a result of the study, three suppliers with inordinately low scores were dropped by the library. Another vendor will be receiving substantially more of our business than ever before. The department will extend this study through 1984 during which time approximately 50% of the annual monographic book orders will be studied.  相似文献

A vendor evaluation project at the University of California at Berkeley Library, employing random distribution of controlled groups of comparable orders among groups of comparable vendors, is described with emphasis on methodology. Results of comparisons between individual vendors are expressed without identifying names; results also include comparisons between French and British orders, various specialists vs. general vendors, the impact of order difficulty and of requesting rush handling, and the relation between geographical location in the U.S. and vendor performance. Statistics generated cover speed, fulfillment, and pattern of delivery described in various graphs. Data gathering and analysis methods are less complex than with random sampling or retrospective comparison of vendors; reports are not monitored; and interruption in routine procedures is minimal. The methodology can be introduced into virtually any automated or manual acquisitions system, or used in combination with other techniques for monitoring vendor performance.  相似文献

The Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Library embarked on the project to convert books and periodicals from the Universal Decimal Classification system to the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system after benchmarking projects showed that work performance could be improved upon the conversion. Planning began in 2005 with strong support from SP management. It was decided to carry out the project in-house. Internship at the National University of Singapore Library was arranged for one staff to learn the use of LCC and how special collections and issues were handled. Student assistants were recruited to assist in various processes. In addition, 10,000 bibliographic records were outsourced to a vendor to assign LCC call numbers in order to speed up the project. The library collection was converted and re-shelved during the Polytechnic vacation periods from February 2007 to March 2008, with the Library remaining open throughout the period.  相似文献

Since 1966 a group of colleges in North Carolina have been annually obtaining an across-the-board discount from book jobbers from firm orders, and in some instances discounts on standing orders. These discounts are offered by the jobbers based on their perception of the market potential of the collective buying power of these institutions. The agreement of the libraries to endorse a jobber or jobbers for a fiscal year is annually reviewed, with primary emphasis in the review process being placed on service and performance of the jobber. This approach achieves more than discount for firm order monographs because it provides an opportunity for several levels of interchange between acquisitions librarians and vendor representatives.  相似文献

Over the past 2 years, shelf-ready services, the outsourcing of cataloging and processing services, has become the hot topic in the library world. This article examines the implications of shelf-ready service, both operationally and organizationally, for both library and vendor. Using the format of a dialog between librarian and vendor, the article discusses the following questions: Why are you interested in contracting for (or providing) these services? What do you hope to gain? What are the stumbling blocks to implementing a shelf-ready program? What is the impact on workflow and staffing in your organization? How many and what kinds of jobs are affected? How do library/vendor responsibilities change when shelf-ready procedures are applied to an approval plan … to firm orders … to standing orders? How can quality control be assured? Which errors really matter? Are the same standards applied to vendor staff as to in-house staff? How are standards affected by shelf-ready? A regional study conducted by 16 libraries sought to develop a vendor evaluation instrument for acquisitions and collection development librarians to establish acceptable ranges of vendor performance in the North Texas area. Criteria studied included fulfillment, turnaround time, discount, shipping charges, number of reports, cancellations by vendors and problems with vendors. One hundred items were ordered by each library between September 18 and October 13 with the study ending on December 15, 1989. Orders were submitted both electronically and by mail to seven domestic vendors. Fulfillment ranged from 56% to 99%; average turnaround time was 42 days for mailed orders versus 36 days for electronically transmitted orders; and average discount was 4.4% for all orders, ranging from 4.2% to 20.3%. Results provided the participants with data against which they could compare their own vendor's performance.  相似文献

This article examines the impact of introducing a patron-driven acquisition service to patrons through a commercially recognizable vendor. The author reports on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Library program, which circulated Amazon Kindles to patrons, with only the Amazon Kindle catalog and a $25 allowance serving as barriers to patron-initiated collection development. Results of this study analyze user activity, preferred subject areas, user feedback, title duplication, and related costs to maintaining the service. The findings of this study may serve as a guide to academic libraries studying the impact of patron-guided collection development.  相似文献

Assessing the British Library's contribution to the national economy is a complex matter, requiring consideration of a number of different dimensions. First, the value added by the Library takes many forms—economic, cultural, social and intellectual. Second, the British Library adds value both to those who use our products and services directly, and to the wider UK population who benefit indirectly from the Library's existence and the services it provides. Traditionally, attempts to assess these benefits have taken the form of qualitative case studies—telling good stories, but failing to provide a comprehensive evaluation. But now a technique supported by the Nobel Prize winning economists, Kenneth Arrow and Robert Solow, permits a coherent quantitative evaluation of the total benefit to the nation of publicly funded institutions and programmes. Recognising the value of this technique, the British Library commissioned a groundbreaking research study to estimate the impact of the Library on the UK economy. The study demonstrates that the Library generates value of around 4.4 times the level of its annual public funding of £83m. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first time the ‘Contingent Valuation’ technique has been used to derive a figure for the overall economic impact of a national or major research library.  相似文献

Libraries are successfully seeking, developing, and testing new ways to broaden their collections with materials that are neither cataloged nor stored for anticipated need. Instead, these acquisitions are purchased on demand, ordered and received online, by fax or overnight mail, and delivered to the requestor. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Chemistry Library, a document delivery project was established to study how this type of acquisition could be mainstreamed into everyday collection development as a traditional user service. A 6 1/2-month pilot project was conducted that provided free document delivery for articles, patents, and conference proceedings, which were available through the Chemical Abstracts Document Delivery Service, a commercial vendor. This pilot study tested the feasibility of decentralized document delivery in a branch library; a follow-up questionnaire was used to gauge user response to the service. Data from the study were also used to evaluate the serials collection and previous serial cancellation decisions. Results showed the decentralized document delivery service (DDS) was a cost-effective way to extend the serials collection; the user survey results showed a high level of user satisfaction associated with the service.  相似文献
