From Fifty Editions of The Old Man and the Sea to Fifty Shades of Grey: A Glimpse of Translation Rights Market in China (2002–2012)

This article provides an overview of the market for translation in China in the last decade based on the data collected from official publishing industrial statements, recent book publishing surveys and news reports. While providing basic information of book publishing in the country, the author also probe the current trends and developments in the field of rights trade, book distribution and digital publishing.     

The use of branding by trade publishers: An investigation into marketing the book as a brand name product

Publishing has traditionally been an introspective industry, and while this is gradually changing, there is a need for publishers to adopt a more market-led approach. This requires the development of branding strategies to increase levels of recognition and consumer loyalty among the book buying public. The nature of the book as a product presents difficulties in applying branding theory to the industry and this study provides an insight into the issues involved in branding the imprint and the author and examines how some trade publishers are addressing these issues. The study also examines the public perception of brands within the trade sector and examines how much impact publishers’ brands have made with the consumer.     

An Overview of Canada’s Contemporary Book Trade in Light of (Nearly) Four Decades of Policy Interventions

Canada’s book trade is fascinating not only because it really consists of two book trades—the Anglophone and the Francophone—but also because it is a site of intense and sustained policy interventions designed to foster greater domestic control. Examining the country’s book policies, Statistics Canada data, trade association membership rosters and trade directories, this paper reveals that Canada’s contemporary book trade is characterized by three features: circa 40 years of government interventions in response to foreign dominance; the central role of foreign firms despite these interventions; and the dominance of Toronto and Montreal as domestic sites of book production.

Business Models in Digital Book Publishing: Some Insights from Australia

This interpretive study of change in Australian book publishing, included a survey of book publishers and the conduct of 14 case studies in five categories of publisher: general trade, academic, professional, specialist and university. This paper reports in detail on the experience on one general trade publisher as it sought to face the challenges of globalization and of organizational and technological change. The major finding was that digitization is indeed, impacting on business models for book publishing, with current models comprising something of a hybrid between the traditional and the innovative. Reflecting the presence in Australia of similar trends and issues that are affecting book publishing around the world, the findings are of relevance both to book publishers and to researchers. The work is original in that relatively little recent academic research has been conducted into book publishing in Australia, particularly as regards the implications of digitization for business models.     

Moscow Publishing and Book Trade: Current State and Problems

图书贸易EDI系统的研究与实现

讨论了EDI 的概念、标准和它在图书贸易中的应用; 介绍了图书贸易EDI 系统的设计与实现方案。该系统采用客户机ö服务器结构, 以Outlook Express 电子邮件系统作为传输载体, 实现了图书贸易中单据的EDIFACT 标准格式转换、数据加密。该系统运行于Internet, 可以完成公司之间图书贸易的订单收发和相应业务处理。     

中国图书版权贸易影响因素测度研究——基于需求偏好相似理论的扩展和应用

首先对需求偏好相似理论进行分析和拓展,并将该理论应用到发展中国家与发达国家之间的图书版权贸易中,进而使用面板数据模型对中国的图书版权贸易进行实证检验。结果显示,需求偏好相似理论对中国的图书版权贸易结构不仅适用,而且以该理论为基础进行修正后的模型分析可以较好地测度中国图书版权贸易的影响因素、影响程度及影响路径,进而以此为依据提出促进中国图书版权贸易发展的对策建议。

The Role of Legal Deposit of Books in the Polish Library Scheme: The Case of Poznań University Library

This article discusses the legal deposit system in Poland, outlining important issues, legal regulations, cooperation with publishers, and the importance of delivering books for academic environment. It emphasizes the significance of legal deposit for shaping collections and improving institutional quality. Poznań University Library is presented as an example of the Polish approach to the issue of book acquisition, including the library’s mission statement and elements of its collection development policy. The author also writes about tasks for the Legal Deposit Office and the library in the near future, including implementation of electronic legal deposit in Poland.

The effect of government policies on the acquisition of library resources in Nigeria

The acquisition of library resources in Nigeria at one time was mainly import oriented. This made the acquisition process very involved in foreign trade and foreign exchange transfer, with most items purchased from overseas book dealers. In the 1970s and 1980s Nigeria was affected by the prevailing world economic condition, and the nation experienced a decline in foreign exchange earnings. In order to improve the nation's economy, the government introduced certain structural policies. This paper highlights the effect of these government policies on the acquisition of library resources generally and the book trade in particular in the country, and the survival measures adopted by the Nigerian libraries.

Selling Digital Rights as a General Publisher: Text and Images

This paper gives an overview of how publishers can market their digital content to potential customers in the book trade and, especially, in other, corporate and non-trade markets. It conveys why for example corporate customers and brands will be attracted to the multiple options publishers’ digital content can offer them to further build their brand and serve consumers’ interest in return. Publishers should be aware of different models to design content deals and of the issues that need to be addressed while negotiating. The paper provides thorough summaries of all questions that must be solved on both ends, with respect to resource, pricing, contract, legal and technical issues, etc. and is thus a very helpful source to begin with.

An Empirical Test of Two Vendors’ Trade Discounts

In a comparison of discounts between Blackwell North America and Baker & Taylor, acquisitions personnel at Jacksonville State University found considerable discrepancy between the two vendors’ categorization of trade books. Then a recently announced lawsuit against Baker & Taylor (B&T) questioning the application of the trade book category, led to a review of B&T invoices for analysis of trade discounts. This study revealed that the vendor applied discounts from 5% to 40% for books classified as trade on their invoices. Based on that four-month study, the authors project an annual difference of almost $4,000 between actual discounts and the anticipated 40% discount for trade books as defined by B&T.
