Building a miniMEDLINE database: which journals to choose?

Scott Memorial Library (SML) at Thomas Jefferson University has installed the Library Information System (LIS) developed by Georgetown University Medical Center Library. One component of the system is miniMEDLINE, a system for searching an inhouse database derived from NLM MEDLINE tapes. This paper describes the process involved in determining which journals should be included in SML's miniMEDLINE file; the number of titles and years covered; the balance between research and clinical titles; the representation of allied health fields; and the level of faculty involvement.

Access to resources

This article reviews the work to date of CURL's Steering Group on Access. In particular it concentrates on the problems of developing a scheme for the interlending of monographs between CURL libraries, the lessons learned from a preliminary trial, the outcome of an analysis of monograph requests from CURL libraries and the challenges in developing a system for the future.     

I & R in an Academic Library

Although not commonly acknowledge, Information & Referral (I & R) services are now an integral feature of many public academic libraries. Two such special services offered in Hclm-Cravens Library, Western Kentucky University, illustrate this development. The Grants Information Center, which evolved from a Foundation Center Cooperative Collection, identifies funding sources for a wide variety of research and developmental projects for acadcrnic and public pakons. The Library's map collection performs a similar function with respect to nonlibrary sources of caitographic information and map products. Both services enhance the library's contribution to the university and to its larger community.

东莞地区图书馆与社会阅读调查项目是由中国图书馆学会图书馆与社会阅读委员会和东莞图书馆联合组成的调研组,针对东莞地区社会阅读状况而开展的调查和评估工作。项目通过文献调研、抽样分析、问卷设计以及在东莞市各镇街展开的全面调查,而获得了大量一手的数据,较全面地展现了东莞地区社会阅读的全貌,本报告对调查数据进行了统计分析,以期为其他城市开展社会阅读活动提供可资借鉴的案例。     

Effective Resource-Sharing and Document Delivery Among Indian Universities: A Study From the INFLIBNET Perspective

Resource-sharing normally follows a network of libraries with decent rules and regulations and provides a common platform for libraries and library staffs to come together, communicate, and extend help to enhance access to information and fulfill the unexpected demands of users. This article studies the use of interlibrary loan and document delivery service at the Information and Library Network Centre under the UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium program. Universities that come under the purview of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India, become members of UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium. The article discusses the recent literature on resource-sharing through interlibrary loan and document delivery service practice in the Indian context. This article suggests improvement of J-Gate Plus discovery and resource-sharing service to enhance access to information resources and for better document delivery.     

Federal documents in the online catalog: Problems,options, and the future

The Government Printing Office Cataloging Tapes appear at first glance to be a cost-effective and efficient method for adding bibliographic records for U.S. documents to an online catalog. However, errors and inconsistencies in these tapes compounded by the lack of documentation make it virtually impossible to load them directly into an online catalog. Currently the only options available for libraries wishing to make use of these tapes are: to purchase them from a commercial cataloging service, to catalog documents one at a time using a bibliographic utility, or to contract with a commercial data base vendor which offers access to the GPO Cataloging Tapes.     

Situating Expertise in Practice: Domain-Based Data Management Training for Liaison Librarians

The research data management team at the University of California, Berkeley implemented a domain-based Librarian Training Program in order to upskill liaison librarians in research data management principles and create a community of practice among librarians providing research data support. The training program partnered with representatives from each subject division of the Library to integrate content from relevant disciplines. The training model emphasized scaffolding and concrete deliverables, teaching specific tools and concepts, and creating learning objects useful for instruction and outreach. Employing a situated, learning-based, pedagogical model, the program was more successful than previous attempts at library-wide research data management training at Berkeley. This analysis details the program management, curricular design, instruction, and outcomes that made the Library Training Program successful.     

国外图书馆联盟印本馆藏分析的比较研究

[目的/意义]通过研究国外图书馆联盟印本馆藏分析项目,旨在为我国图书馆界开展联盟印本馆藏分析提供实施流程和馆藏分析方法层面的建议。[方法/过程]选取3个具有代表性的联盟印本馆藏分析项目,即美国OhioLINK-OCLC馆藏与流通分析项目、澳大利亚研究图书馆馆藏分析项目、英国CURL/RSLP馆藏匹配项目,从研究目的、馆藏分析实施方法、馆藏分析结果、馆藏分析结论4个方面进行研究,并从数据来源、数据处理和馆藏分析维度方面对3个项目进行比较分析。[结果/结论]提出我国开展联盟馆藏分析时应注意联合目录数据库的重要性,解决分类号与学科主题的映射关系,以及根据研究目的选择相应的分析维度。     

标杆分析在信息素养教育中的应用与研究——以南通大学图书馆为例

[目的/意义]在回顾国内外图书馆领域对标杆分析方法的研究及应用的基础上,尝试将标杆分析方法应用于改进图书馆信息素养教育。[方法/过程]选择清华大学图书馆、上海交通大学图书馆和武汉大学图书馆3所优秀的大学图书馆作为标杆瞄准目标,构建由6个一级指标和22个二级指标组成的标杆分析指标体系来收集数据。从新生入馆教育、课程教学、资源与服务培训讲座、网络培训和特色项目等方面进行差距分析,拟定南通大学图书馆的标杆方案和具体的实施计划。[结果/结论]采用标杆分析的科学方法和标准流程,学习目的明确、指标全面、数据翔实,学习方案的制定和实施做到了有的放矢,有效推进。最后,总结标杆分析成功应用的关键要素,阐述标杆分析方法的优缺点和局限性,并展望后续研究的方向。     

我国图书馆学硕博士学位论文研究热点可视化分析

采用关键词词频分析和共词分析方法,以CNKI、万方和国家图书馆特色资源库为数据源,对1991-2009年图书馆学硕博士学位论文进行分析,利用因子分析、聚类分析和多维尺度分析,绘制我国图书馆学硕博士学位论文的研究热点知识图谱,展示主要学术知识群和研究热点。认为我国图书馆学需要确立理论内核,形成中国图书馆学。     

A note on the Philadelphia Regional Medical Library Committee

No rigid library plan can fullfil the needs of every region. The Philadelphia Regional Medical Library Committee, composed of representatives of the five medical schools, the College of Physicians, and other medical organizations, was formed to determine cooperative activities that best suit its own needs. The committee has reviewed plans for new libraries at several medical schools to avoid duplication of library resources. It envisions, also, cooperative storage of little-used materials, messenger service, an acquisition program to expand regional resources, improved communication by means of mechanical devices, and the establishment of a regional center and distribution of bibliographies from regionally located MEDLARS tapes.     

How Much of Library and Information Science Literature Qualifies as Research?

There is an extensive amount of Library and Information Science (LIS) writing produced each year. While there is general awareness regarding the variety of journal literature, there is no certainty on the percentage of the collection that we can call research. This project is an important first step in answering the question. A content analysis of the LIS academic/scholarly journals at the Simmons College Library was conducted. The research level collection of LIS literature makes the library an ideal candidate for this study. The latest issue of each journal subscribed to for fiscal year 2012–2013 containing academic/scholarly content was analyzed. Each article was analyzed to determine: 1) if it was research or non-research, 2) the method used to collect data for the study in the article, and 3) the subject terms or keywords associated with the article. 105 journal titles were identified out of 177 periodicals. In the 1880 articles analyzed from these, 16% qualified as research. Surveys were found to be the most popular research method used. This study will benefit students, faculty, and staff with research requirements as well as librarians who guide patrons through a search for research literature.     

The role of an NHS library service in the UK: the perceptions of clinical managers in Portsmouth, UK

BACKGROUND: Portsmouth NHS Library Service is exploring methods of raising its profile within its host organization and wishes to demonstrate its contribution to achieving organizational goals, perhaps by means of an impact study. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this small scale study, regarded as a possible precursor to an impact study, was to identify areas where there is potential to increase awareness among clinical managers of the Library's contribution. METHODS: An e-mail survey was sent to clinical managers to elicit their opinions regarding the contribution of the Library Service to organizational goals. RESULTS: Perhaps unsurprisingly, the role of the Library Service in education, research and effectiveness was most widely recognized. Of responses, 30/42 (71%) rated it as 'very important' and a further 11 (26%) rated it as 'important'. The low appreciation of the Library Service to Clinical Services is a disappointment in view of the body of research evidence. Only 12 respondents (29%) thought that the Library Service contributed 'significantly' by 'supporting informed and timely clinical decision making'. CONCLUSION: The study suggested areas where there might be scope to raise awareness of the Library contribution. In considering how best to achieve this, the benefits need to be weighed against the resource implications. Portsmouth NHS Library Service decided to increase its marketing efforts but not to carry out an impact study in the short term.     

关于公共图书馆立法及其支撑研究

2008年11月,<公共图书馆法>立法工作启动.由中国图书馆学会和国家图书馆牵头进行的支撑研究涉及11个研究专题,为立法提供思想、理论、学术、方案等方面支撑.立"大法"还是立"小法",是围绕图书馆立法争论的问题之一.<公共图书馆法>是否涉及国家图书馆,业内看法不一,立法实践尚无定论.图书馆人应以积极、负责、理性的态度参与和推动立法进程.
