完善集团财务控制提高集团经济效益

Information within a system of the basic categories of a planetary analysis

At the turn of the 21st century a methodological analysis of the planetary development of civilization became a topical issue in world science. Such an analysis is based on a framework of categorical concepts adopted for active use in globalistics, namely, the biosphere, sociosphere, technosphere, noosphere, and infosphere. The given context provides a new perspective on the phenomenon of information and informatics, with the latter having experienced increasing demands as a popular scientific discipline in the field of information. In the contemporary setting, these phenomena can be adequately evaluated only in connection with the above concepts.     

Measuring the smartness of a library

Traditional libraries around the world are integrating cutting-edge technologies, such as data mining, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and voice-based search, to transform themselves into smart libraries. However, what elements make a library smart? How does one estimate the smartness of a library? To address these fundamental questions five elements and fifteen subelements that make a library smart were identified from a comprehensive review of the literature. A fuzzy-based model for use computing a library's smartness index was developed around these elements/subelements. Ease of use of this model was demonstrated by applying it to measure the smartness of a large academic library in South Asia.

Organizational culture as a basis for the competitiveness of a library

The problems of the formation of organizational culture and the internal communications in library activities are considered. Methods for transformation of the traditional functions in library personnel management and the most efficient means and motivation instruments and education of specialists of a modern library are proposed.     

Using the results of a satisfaction survey to demonstrate the impact of a new library service model

Background: In 2005, the University of Calgary entered into a contract to provide library services to the staff and physicians of Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone (AHS CZ), creating the Health Information Network Calgary (HINC). Objectives: A user satisfaction survey was contractually required to determine whether the new library service model created through the agreement with the University of Calgary was successful. Our additional objective was to determine whether information and resources provided through the HINC were making an impact on patient care. Methods: A user satisfaction survey of 18 questions was created in collaboration with AHS CZ contract partners and distributed using the snowball or convenience sample method. Results: Six hundred and ninety-four surveys were returned. Of respondents, 75% use the HINC library services. More importantly, 43% of respondents indicated that search results provided by library staff had a direct impact on patient care decisions. Conclusions: Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone staff are satisfied with the new service delivery model, they are taking advantage of the services offered, and using library provided information to improve patient care.

The use of a weighted impact factor for the creation of a polythematic list of the most cited journals

The standard impact factor allows one to compare scientific journals only within particular scientific subjects. To overcome this limitation, another indicator of citation, viz., the thematically weighted impact factor (TWIF), is proposed. This indicator allows one to compare journals of various subjects and takes the fact that a journal belongs to several subjects into account. Information on the thematic headings of a journal and the value of a standard impact factor is necessary for calculation of the indicator. The TWIF, which is calculated according to the citation index of Journal Citation Reports, is investigated in this article.     

Bibliotherapy: a critique of the literature

Most of the literature on bibliotherapy has been nonscientific, because of the too broad use of the term "bibliotherapy." The author proposes, for the sake of clarification in the literature, that "bibliotherapy" be defined as a program of selected activity involving reading materials which is planned, conducted, and controlled under the guidance of a physician as treatment for psychiatric patients and which uses, if needed, the assistance of a trained librarian. Bibliotherapy, then, falls into three categories: books prescribed for a patient, books selected by a patient, and group discussion of books. Bibliotherapy may be helpful by facilitating abreaction, projection, narcissistic gratification, verbalization, constructive thinking between interviews, and reinforcement of social and cultural patterns. Bibliotherapy is probably indicated in self-motivated neurotic patients who ask for helpful reading materials. Bibliotherapy offers no panacea, but with proper scientific study may help many patients.     

Organizing the work of a organizational specialist

We consider the place of library systemization in the technological process of acquiring a document fund. A conclusion is drawn on the necessity of combining the functions of a organizational specialist and a cataloger. Guidelines are given on the main questions on how to organize systemization under the following conditions: scheduling; handling of staff, documentation support; a procedural help system; and a workstation for the organizational specialist. The main steps are generated for an algorithm of how an organizational specialist is supposed to work.
