Using Extraction Experiment as a Tool for Teaching Scientific Process Skills

Laboratory work educates students about the ＂processes of science＂. But it is suggested that students＇ learning level is low because of limited application of science processes in their laboratory work. Extraction experiment was chosen as the topic since it allows students to apply many of their basic chemistry knowledge, and it can be readily to gain understanding of scientific proceses required for an investigation. This study has been carried out with 40 students who are in the first year of Science Teaching Division at Trakya University, Faculty of Education. These students were divided into two groups of the experimental group and the control group, each group containing 20 students. The students of the experimental group were given knowledge about basic scientific process skills, and a procedure in detail to follow was given. But the students of the control group was given a standard procedure. The students of both groups were asked about what and why they did while they were performing the laboratory investigation. We observed that the experimental group students used the basic process skills, understood the extraction experiment, and realized what and why they did from this activity better than the control group students. The control group students did not know why they did laboratory work and they tended to focus on completing the task rather than learning from it. We considered that the experience would be helpful for students to improve scientific process skills if the students successfully acquired procedural understanding. Students＂ scientific processskills will develop as long as they use the skills.

The Olympic Games and Ⅰ

On a hot summer night, Ⅰ went downstairs to cool off myself under the tree after Ⅰ played basketball with my friends. Ⅰ felt a little bored and sleepy. Then Ⅰ turned on the radio. The pro- gram was about the news of the Olympics Games in 2008. Ⅰ learnt that a lot of things would be done before the games were hold. The radio said that now we were improving the natural environment so that we would have a better place to hold the games, that we were bringing in and also self-researehing the high technology so as to help us hold the game more easily, and that we were enhancing our country＇s fame in history culture, economy achievement, politic function and so on. A picture began to form in my mind slowly.     

If I Were a Teacher

Teachers are just like our parents.They spend much time on our studies.They always want us to learn as much as possible.Because of this,we always have little time to relax. If I were a teacher,I would teach the students how to learn well.If my students made mistakes in my subject,I would not worry much about it.Failure is the mother of success.I would tell them to review what they have learned and find the solutions to the problem.And I won't forget one important thing,that is,if I were a teacher,I would give them less homework.I would give them more free time to relax themselves.     

Study finds more giant pandas

Giant pandas may not be in as much danger of extinction as feared with a new British-Chinese study finding there could be twice as many living in the wild as previously thought, scientists said on June 19. "This finding indicates that the species may have a significantly better chance of long-term viability (生存能力) than recently anticipated, and that this beautiful animal may have a brighter future," the scientists said in a statement. Until now scientists thought there were about 1,590 giant pandas living in reserves in the mountains of China. But scientists from Britain's Cardiff University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences now think there could be as many as 3,000 there after a survey using a new method to profile DNA from panda faces revealed
