Music across the curriculum: More than just circle time

Most educators will agree that music has an important place in a high-quality program for young children. Singing or listening to music are pleasurable activities, and the affective benefits of music are obvious to anyone who has ever sung a child to sleep. What teachers may not realize, however, is how music may be incorporated into other areas of the curriculum. More than just a brain: emotions and the doctoral experience

While the epistemological and ontological challenges faced by doctoral candidates are well documented, the same cannot be said of the emotional dimensions of the journey. This paper draws on Activity Theory in exploring the role of emotion in the longitudinal doctoral learning experiences of six international PhD candidates studying in Australia. Analysis reveals that writing and supervision practices are common sites of tension but that the prevailing culture of silence militates against systemic change.     

Middle‐School Homework Management: More than just gender and family involvement

The article links student and family characteristics, along with homework characteristics and homework purposes, to homework management as reported by 194 middle‐school students in Grades 5–6. The results revealed that homework management was not related to grade level, amount of parental education, time spent on homework, or extrinsic reasons for doing homework. However, girls and students who received family help reported more frequently managing their homework. In addition, homework interest and whether homework was a favorite activity were positively related to the use of homework management strategies, above and beyond gender and family help. Furthermore, intrinsic reasons for doing homework accounted for an additional, significant percentage of the variance in homework management, with higher levels of intrinsic reasons being positively associated with more frequent use of homework management strategies.     

More than just a group: teacher collaboration and learning in the workplace

Teaching is often characterized as an isolated activity, yet opportunities for teachers to work and learn together in schools are increasing. Underlying this shift is the view that as teachers work on new practices and teaching challenges together, they will express varied perspectives, reveal different teaching styles and experiences, and stimulate reflection and professional growth. Despite strong research interest in teacher learning groups, few studies have looked at the relationship between teachers' conversations and collaboration outside the classroom and their actual classroom teaching. Drawing on data from a larger study of literacy instruction with middle‐school teachers, this article describes how three teachers participated in an ongoing literacy program with a research group. Two were seventh‐ and eighth‐grade language‐arts teachers, the third was a special‐education teacher who taught a substantially separate class of cognitively delayed and learning‐disabled students. Case studies of each teacher draw on meeting observations, classroom observations and interviews to describe how each participated in after‐school meetings, how they used the work of the group in the classroom, and how they brought teaching successes and challenges back to the group. Although each of the teachers participated actively in the teacher learning group and changed their practice, the teachers with the most advanced teaching of literacy practices did not bring that expertise into the teacher group as fully as they might have. The analysis raises questions about how teachers participate and learn and how to structure teacher groups to maximize teacher learning.     

More than just charts and graphs: What to teach in a data visualization course

Based on our experience developing and delivering a highly successful data visualization course within a Master of Science in Business Analytics program, we present a taxonomy for data visualization courses and recommend content and pedagogical features for each type of data visualization course therein. We also discuss the interdependence between data visualization and business communication as a critical consideration in course design.     

More than ‘just play’: picking out three dimensions of a balanced early years pedagogy

ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the incompletely resolved tension between play-based and direct teaching approaches to early years pedagogy and practitioners’ resultant difficulties in understanding and delivering high-quality practice. Previously, we argued for the importance of infusing playfulness into all classroom interactions and activities in order to assist practitioners in forming a useful mental model of early years practice. Here, we extend the playful image to present a new, coherent framework for early years practice, based on three dimensions: the degree of playfulness in the activity taking place, the locus of control of the action during the activity and the nature of the learning taking place. We lay out the framework and describe its relation to free play as a prelude to discussing how it applies to classroom play and other types of early years classroom activity, illustrated by cameos. It is argued that the full range of each dimension should be well sampled through choosing a variety of activities and that such an approach will preserve high levels of child engagement. The framework provides a useful tool to prompt reflective practice and professional development.     

More than merely monitoring

This paper by Dee Edwards, Project Officer in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Open University and Judith Metcalfe, Staff Tutor in Science in the Birmingham Region continues the debate on the University's system for monitoring tutor‐marked assignments. The authors focus firstly on the monitoring of grade reliability and then review ways of enhancing correspondence tuition skills through staff development meetings.

In an effort to provide a vision of birth to readers, each issue of The Journal of Perinatal Education begins with a birthing story. Often, these stories describe the experience of one woman or one family. In this installment of "Celebrate Birth!" however, the author focuses on an example of how groups of women keep collective birthing stories alive across years and generations.     

Several complex variables are better than just one

In this popular expository article, we discuss some important ways in which complex analysis in more than one variable is different from complex analysis in one variable. Analytic continuation in several variables is contrasted with that in one variable, and the notion of psuedoconvexity is defined. Hartogs phenomenon and the Levi problem are also discussed in an informal way.

More by Accident than Design?

The scenes below are based on real events recorded during an investigation into the integration of children with moderate learning difficulties in secondary schools in four Welsh counties. The project was funded by the Welsh Office Education Department (WOED, 1988) and carried out from Cardiff by Professor Graham Upton and Frances Beasley from March 1985 to June 1986. Part of the study, on which the present article is based, focused on local authority policies and the practical implications of these policies for the provisions which they make. Professor Upton is head of the School of Education, Birmingham University, and Frances Beasley is a research fellow at Kent University.     

More than just a game: the role of simulation in the teaching of product design and entrepreneurship to mechanical engineering students

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the debate on the best pedagogical approach to developing undergraduate mechanical engineering skills to meet the requirements of contemporary complex working environments. The paper provides an example of using student–entrepreneur collaboration in the teaching of modules to Mechanical Engineering final-year students. Problem-based learning (PBL) is one of the most significant recent innovations in the area of education for the professions. This work proposes to make an original contribution by simulating a real-life entrepreneur interaction for the students. The current literature largely confines simulation-based learning to computer applications such as games. However, this paper argues that role playing by students interfacing with technology start-ups can also be regarded as ‘simulation’ in a wider sense. Consequently, the paper proposes the concept of simulation-action learning as an enhancement of PBL and to distinguish it from computer simulation.     

Bilingualism and Inclusion: more than just rhetoric?

Within education policy in England the principle of inclusion has been established as a goal and a factor on which improvements in overall standards are seen to depend. Prominent within the drive to raise standards has been a demonstrable need to improve the National Curriculum attainment of members of certain minority ethnic groups, some of which are characteristically bilingual. In the context of education in England, this paper explores the relationship between bilingualism and inclusion, examining, on the one hand official attitudes to bilingualism, and bilingual support as expressed in the publications of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) and on the other on the reflections of a number of bilingual teaching assistants.
