Librarian-facilitated problem-based learning course in a school of dental medicine

While problem-based learning has been used in medical practice for several decades, dental education was slower to adapt this education model. However, as dental curricula are embracing this pedagogy, dental and other health sciences librarians are in a position to provide important curricular support. This article will detail one dental liaison librarian's experience with facilitating a problem-based, case-based studies course within the curriculum of a dental school.

Opportunities for faculty‐librarian collaboration in an expanded dentistry curriculum

With the increased emphasis on evidence based practice, developing information literacy skills earlier in health care education programmes is widely accepted. However finding opportunities for relevant teaching can present challenges, often leading to a lack of integration. In this paper, guest writers Sean Stone and colleagues from Indiana University discuss their involvement with an expanded dental hygiene curriculum in the University School of Dentistry. This expansion has provided the opportunity to plan integration of information and oral health literacy instruction and evidence based practice across the new curriculum, and provide transferable skills for any major. In particular, the paper addresses the developmental work the health librarian team engaged in from course design, delivery and assessment to improve student preparedness for evidence based practice. The SMILE project represented a partnership among the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Libraries, the Gateway Clinic in Laredo, and the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. The project focused on improving dental practitioners' access to reliable information resources and integrating the best evidence into public health dental practice. Through its training program, SMILE cultivated a set of "power information users" among the dentists, dental hygienists, and community health workers (promotores) who provided public health preventive care and oral health education. The dental public health practitioners gained information literacy skills and increased their knowledge about reliable sites such as blogs, PubMed?, and MedlinePlus?. This project fostered opportunities for expanded partnerships with public health personnel.

Impact of librarians in first-year medical and dental student problem-based learning (PBL) groups: a controlled study

BACKGROUND: Librarians at the University of Alberta have been involved with teaching undergraduate medical and dental education for several years. After 1 year of increased librarian involvement at the problem-based learning (PBL), small-group level, informal feedback from faculty and students suggested that librarians' participation in PBL groups was beneficial. There was, however, no real evidence to support this claim or justify the high demand on librarians' time. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine whether having a librarian present in the small-group, problem-based learning modules for first-year medical and dental students results in an improved understanding of evidence-based medicine concepts, the nature of medical literature, and information access skills. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-four first-year medical and dental students participated in the study. There were a total of 18 PBL groups, each with approximately nine students and one faculty tutor. Six librarians participated and were assigned randomly to the six intervention groups. Students were given pre- and post-tests at the outset and upon completion of the 6-week course. RESULTS: Post-test scores showed that there was a small positive librarian impact, but final exam scores showed no impact. There was also no difference in attitudes or comfort levels between students who had a librarian in their group and those who did not. CONCLUSIONS: Impact was not sufficient to warrant continued participation of librarians in PBL. In future instruction, librarians at the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library will continue to teach at the larger group level.

在美国,课程信息服务已经成为大学图书馆常规信息服务业务之一,其课程信息服务的形式、内容和运行模式等方面对于我国高技图书馆开展课程信息服务均有值得借鉴的地方.在分析课程信息服务的内容、特征以及作用,简要地介绍我国高校图书馆课程信息服务现状的基础上,重点研究了美国几所大学图书馆基于web的课程信息服务,对我国高校图书馆开展课程信息服务提出了几点建议.     

Assessing the roles and challenges of librarians in dental systematic and scoping reviews

Objective:The objective of this study was to determine the scope of experience, roles, and challenges that librarians face in participating in dental and oral health systematic and scoping reviews to inform outreach efforts to researchers and identify areas for librarian professional development.Methods:The authors developed a twenty-three-item survey based on the findings of two recent articles about health sciences librarians'' roles and challenges in conducting systematic and scoping reviews. The survey was distributed via electronic mailing lists to librarians who were likely to have participated in conducting dental systematic and scoping reviews.Results:While survey respondents reported participating in many dental reviews, they participated more commonly in systematic reviews than in scoping reviews. Also, they worked less commonly on dental and oral health reviews than on non-dental reviews. Librarian roles in dental reviews tended to follow traditional librarian roles: all respondents had participated in planning and information retrieval stages, whereas fewer respondents had participated in screening and assessing articles. The most frequently reported challenges involved the lead reviewer or review team rather than the librarians themselves, with time- and methodology-related challenges being most common.Conclusions:Although librarians might not be highly involved in dental and oral health systematic and scoping reviews, more librarian participation in these reviews, either as methodologists or information experts, may improve their reviews'' overall quality.

新信息环境下高校信息检索课的教学目标应当定位在强化大学生的信息素养和创新能力上。为此，文章指出了课程内容深化和体系拓展的方向，从而对课程的主体内容做了较详细的勾画，并从改变教学方式、加强师资队伍建设、注重信息资源建设、采用现代化教学手段、完善教学保障体系等方面，对实现新的教学目标的条件与措施作分析，提出信息检索课是一门发展着的学科，应当深入地、不断地对现行的信息检索课程进行改革与研究，使之成为人们信息教育的主要课程之一。     

新环境下“编目”课程教学问题的思考

认为新环境下的信息组织课程是对传统“编目”课程的继承与发展。因而,在教学思路上,一方面,信息组织课程要保留传统“编目”课程的精髓;另一方面,传统编目理论与技术又需要调整定位。同时,要强调信息组织理论素养和计算机技术在信息组织课程的重要性。在课程设置上,应考虑到信息组织在信息资源管理学科的位置和所承担的任务与职能,可采用层次化课程设置方法;在教学方法上,要注意平衡理论与实践,并兼顾各种载体和重视计算机教学。

文献检索课是提高学生信息意识和检索能力的素质教育课。我国大多数普通高校都开设了文献检索课。以南昌大学科学技术学院为例,分析了独立学院开设文献检索课的必要性和可行性。

提出随着泛在知识环境的实现,信息检索课有可能采取移动教学这种新型的教学方式。对移动教学的内涵及信息检索课开展移动教学的必要性、可行性、实现方式进行研究,同时对开展信息检索课移动教学可能存在的问题进行分析。     

Student Perceptions of a Required Information Literacy Course on Their Success in Research & Writing Intensive Criminal Justice Courses

Scholars in Criminal Justice have argued that students should have a stand-alone course that focuses on fostering library literacy skills for Criminal Justice students in order to improve their writing, research, and presentation skills. In 2011, a required information literacy course was implemented in one Criminal Justice program to meet this need. Building on the existing literature, the current study is the first to explore student perceptions of a required information literacy course. The results offer valuable information on how to strengthen the course moving forward and can provide useful suggestions to other Criminal Justice programs thinking about instituting a library literacy course in their curriculum.     

Assessing Information Literacy Instruction in the Basic Communication Course

Information literacy is becoming a key component of general education programs nationwide. As a critical part of most general education programs, the basic communication course is on the frontlines of the charge to teach information literacy skills to first-year students. Thus, the information literacy skills of basic course students should be assessed to track the effectiveness of instruction and pedagogical practices. The present study used a pretest/posttest design with experimental and control groups to assess the effectiveness of information literacy instruction in the basic course. As predicted, students in the experimental group outperformed students in the control group on the information literacy measure. Results of the present study have implications for basic course directors and instructors, general education curriculum specialists, and librarians.

案例教学法在信息检索课教学中的应用探讨

案例教学法是一种启发探究式的课堂教学方法。针对高校学生特别是工科专业大学生的阅读兴趣与专业课程内容,在图书、专利文献和学位论文三种类型文献检索课教学中,分别列出了大学生感兴趣的信息检索课程案例,通过学生课前预习和课堂讲解、评价与总结,以激发学生对信息检索课程的学习兴趣,进一步提高信息检索课的教学效果。     

高校网络信息检索教学研究

本文在强调网络信息检索教学应成为目前高校信息检索课重头戏的基础上，对高校网络信息检索课的新学过程进行了教学改革研究，从教学模式的选择、教学内容的优化、实习环节的加强等方面进行了探讨。     

Bringing Information Literacy into the Social Sphere: A Case Study Using Social Software to Teach Information Literacy at WFU

This article presents an approach to teaching information literacy in an academic course from a socio-technical perspective. It includes an overview of the course framework, a review of course contents, and an analysis of student responses provided through pre- and post-course surveys. The premise of the course design was that students bring a set of technical and information skills to class that address specific but not generalized information literacy goals. By designing a course to engage students from this perspective, the instructors hoped to find a new method for approaching information literacy instruction.
