This paper focuses on the connection between self-construal and social media about Chinese college students and explores how and what the connections are between independent self-construal or interdependent self-construal and social media.The research begins at the differences of self-construal,and the connections between different self-construal.Based on the data analysis and interviews,five themes are developed.

The women of the 1930s in the Chinese TV serials deduct inspiring stories.They play different roles in the big wealthy families such as mothers-in-law,daughters-in-law,and maidservants.There are unceasing conflicts between these women,because of their struggle for men’s love,wealth or social position.The theme of their stories is always about fertility,love,kindness and evil,with the ending being either comic or tragic.The stories of various kinds of women of the 1930s in the Chinese TV serials decorate and enrich the lives of many of us latecomers and their names are passed on from generation to generation.     

Gender Discrimination in English

Gender discrimination in language is usually defined as discrimination based on sex,especially discrimination against women.With the rise of women’s liberation movement in the 1960s and 1970s,and the improvement of women’s social status in recent years,gender discrimination in English attracts more and more attention.Based on previous studies,this thesis first discusses the manifestations of gender discrimination in English vocabulary and address terms,then analyzes the factors of gender discrimination in English from social and cultural perspectives,finally puts forward some methods that are good for avoiding or eliminating gender discrimination in English.     

The Role of Social Capital/Guanxi in Students’ Decision-Making about Postgraduate Education in China: An Explorative Case Study

This paper explores how the concept of social capital developed by Bourdieu and Coleman as well as the Chinese concept of guanxi (关系) or relationships facilitates students’ access to postgraduate education in a case study of a university in southeast China. The study comprises an initial survey of 381 first-year postgraduate students and a series of interviews with 30 participants. Social capital and guanxi inform analysis of the data. The results reveal that students from different social backgrounds employ different forms of social capital and guanxi networks in their decision-making about postgraduate education. They contribute to conceptualizations of how social capital is generated through guanxi in the Chinese educational context.

Gender Is Cultural Rather Than Natural—Jane Campion's The Piano

Sex and gender have been confusingly categorised by many scholars.Sex refers to biological characteristics;gender,can also be influenced by biology but does not determined by it.Unlike sex,which is determined by nature at birth,gender is a social construct specifying the culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow and represent.In order to argue that gender attaches to culture and that gender identity is shaped socially and culturally,this essay analyses Jane Campion’s The Piano from three perspectives.Firstly,the essay will examine the way people in the film represent their gender characters through three repeatedly demonstrated narrative motifs,clothing,the axe and the piano,to illustrate that gender is performative and that cultural gender identities advocate specific performances in terms of behaviour,speech,views,etc.(Butler,2011).Then,through an analysis of the different gazes of the characters in the film,the essay indicates that social and cultural interaction between the genders can go beyond and blur the boundaries of the stereotypical categories of male and female.In the third section,the essay will argue that social rules and discourse also play a prominent role in shaping people’s gender,by discussing how the characters represent and re-define their gender identity under the pressure of the patriarchal society they inhabit.     

Social work students＇ attitude toward poverty in the new economy： A multivariate analysis

This study, conducted at a mid-sized university located in central Canada, had two purposes. The first was to simultaneously assess the influence of undergraduate social work education and other variables such as gender, ethnicity, perceived financial security and political affiliation on students＇ attitude toward poverty. The second was to contribute to the fledgling body of international studies which focus on the area of social work education and perceptions of poverty. The participants in this study were students enrolled in one of three selected undergraduate social work courses or an undergraduate business course. In all of the social work classes, the students were exposed to key ideas and concepts pertaining to poverty and poverty policy, including the cyclical nature of market economies and the challenges and barriers faced by the working poor population. The results indicated that social work education and affiliation with a leftist political ideology predicted a more structural attitude toward poverty.     

Teaching statistics in labor,social, juridical or economic studies

Statistics teaching should not be carried out in the same way for all kinds of university students. Instead, teaching statistics should take into account the different fields of study that students have chosen. For example, students of sciences or engineering have different interests and backgrounds compared to students of any social or juridical field. Questions of interest are explored and put into the language of statistics. To answer the questions, the necessary statistical methods are used. The approach takes into account the students＇ levels and the kind of studies or professional orientation of these students.

Pitfalls in an International Development (ID) Project Implementation: A Case Study in a Developing Country

Literature review noted that donor funded projects and programs are sometimes referred to as International Development: ID projects. ID projects and programs are often being provided for the developing countries like an emerging, developing or least developed country. Such projects and programs are under public sector development specifically designed for economic and social needs of developing countries. These projects or programs are either implemented by recipient governments under a bilateral (or multilateral) agreement with the donor country or through an ’implementing partner’ of the donor, frequently a non-governmental organization or professional contractor. The operating environment and culture of the host country also make ID projects different from traditional business projects and make traditional project management tools in the developed world less appropriate (Blunt and Jones, 1992). This sometimes provides big challenges to various project teams. The paper through a Case study approach evaluates an ID Chinese Government funding construction project and its pitfalls through qualitative research approach. Qualitative data was presented and discussed to provide an insight into major challenges in the implementation of ID project of such scale.     

Parents＇ views on preschool care and education in local community

In this text, the authors are analyzing preschool care and education in local community. They are focusing on the problem of information transfer between the kindergarten, parents and local community, as well as the model of relationship participation. Cooperation between parents, kindergarten and local community is an important element in the preschool institution quality, because it changes inner relationships, climate and culture. Expectations about cooperation in some authors＇ views （Resman, 1992; Schleicher, 1989; Coleman, 1998; Ryan, 1995） depend on tradition, objectives, social context, legal framework and situational demands. The research data show that Slovene kindergartens have more consumer-like relationships with parents instead of partnership. Kindergartens are clear about important information concerning their pedagogical work and organization, but they do not include parents in making decisions about the developing and executing of programs. 92.3% of parents think that the information they receive is clear, understandable only 89.6% think they are frequent. More then half of the interviewed parents frequently or always participate in kindergarten life and work, only about 43% believe that they can co-influence the development or realization of the programme. Parents also think that the local community is not giving them enough information about preschool care problems, because only 10.2% are included in solving current preschool care problems in their municipality.

Gender Responsiveness of Selected Primary School English Textbooks in Zimbabwe

When classrooms are not gender responsive, boys and girls seating in the same classroom and learning from the same teacher receive very different education. Each and every textbook and all learning materials tell a story about people; how they relate to one another and to the environment within which they live. The present study is a desk research conducted to establish the extent of gender responsiveness of selected primary school English textbooks in Zimbabwe. Using the ABC of Gender Analysis framework, the study made quantitative and qualitative analyses of two selected series of primary school English textbooks, which are Step in New Primary English （Grade 1 to 7） and Ventures English Alive! （Grade 1 to 7 Pupil＇s Book）. Components of the ABC of Gender Analysis were used to make a critical analysis of the textbooks. Despite the fact that a number of measures have been put in place to address issues of gender inequality in all sectors, findings from the study revealed that the selected primary school English textbooks continue to perpetuate gender discrimination and bias. This impacts negatively on the education of girl children and it is detrimental to equal educational attainment for boys and girls. Girls tend to be affected and lag behind, others fail to excel and even drop out. The study recommends the promotion of zero tolerance to gender biases and stereotypes in all learning and teaching environments. The study also recommends that school textbooks be exposed to the rigour of gender analysis before they are recommended for use in any educational activity.     

The effect of interpersonal relationships on psychosomatic symptoms： Moderating role of gender

The purposes of this study were twofold： （1） to verify whether or not gender and interpersonal relationships influence the variance of psychosomatic symptoms in Taiwanese adolescents; and （2） to examine the moderating role of gender between interpersonal relationships and psychosomatic symptoms in Taiwanese adolescents. The present study adopted data from the Taiwan Education Panel Survey （TEPS） using a stratified-random methodology. Results indicated that： （1） gender accounts for a significant amount of variance of psychosomatic symptoms; （2） interpersonal relationships account for a significant amount of variance in psychosomatic symptoms over and above gender; and （3） gender moderates the associations of mother-adolescent and teacher-student relationships and psychosomatic symptoms, whereas it does not moderate the associations between father-adolescent, sibling, or peer relationships or psychosomatic symptoms.
