This article argues that Burton Clark’s notion of the expanded developmental periphery provides a useful conceptual framework for examining the differing relationships between continuing and professional education units and the institutional core of traditional research universities. The intent is to examine how Clark’s notion offers a means to detect and analyse factors that assist in empowering some units and, conversely, those that are disempowering and lead to a perception of marginalisation in others. The article begins by examining differing perspectives in the literature on the relationship between continuing and professional education units and the university core. It then revisits Clark’s work on entrepreneurial universities before focussing on just one of the five transforming elements that Clark argues underscore the success of entrepreneurial universities—the expanded developmental periphery. The article explains how this notion was developed into a conceptual framework and was used in my own research examining the contribution that three continuing and professional education units made to their universities in Washington DC, Hong Kong and Sydney. I have used Clark’s notion as a diagnostic tool, which may have a wider application for examining relationships between the institutional core and its periphery. 相似文献

Building on international migration theories and the literature on the dynamics of student mobility, this study sketches a
two-dimensional framework and examines its utility to understand the rationales of in-bounding student mobility in Turkey.
The empirical part of the study was conducted with 331 international students studying in public universities of Turkey. The
results suggest that private rationales are prominent for students coming from Western and economically developed countries.
In contrast, economic and academic rationales are prominent for students coming from Eastern and economically developing countries.
The study suggests three insights which are instrumental in re-interpreting the position of the countries in the periphery
in international student mobility. First, the nature of cultural, political, and historical proximity between home and host
countries determines the size and direction of in-flowing student mobility in economically developing countries. Second, for
developing countries pre-departure pulling rationales at private level are more prominent than public rationales. Third, despite
the general trend that student mobility flows from economically less developed toward economically developed countries, this
study suggests that in the periphery there are regional hubs attracting students largely originating from other countries

This paper has two purposes: first, to investigate centre- periphery, and within-school relationships and processes by which Vietnam schools undertake system reform implementation; second, to develop the explanatory power and complementarity of two theories – complex adaptive system theory and loose-tight coupling. Main findings - schools’ internal enablers driving reforms were shaped by external enablers; a plethora of internal enablers then worked in concert to implement the intended reforms (eg. the take-up of student-centred teaching and learning); in the local adaptation process, school culture and professional development were pre-eminent. Conclusions – complex adaptive system theory was validated in how Vietnam schools locally adapted policy. 相似文献
