At midnight on 1 November 1970, the great bells in the monastery of San Niccolo in the Italian town of Carpegna tolled on their own. For several months after that, they continued to ring spontaneously now and then without the help of humans, animals or winds. Despite investigations by the police and scientists, no explanation wasever found.  相似文献

In an attempt to understand different cultures in the use of idioms which related to animals, this study collected, compared, and analyzed Chinese and English idioms on"马"and"horse"by references to a large number of dictionaries. The results show that in Chinese, the idioms on horse has the following features:above all,it covers evenly in commendatory, neutral, and derogatory senses;more specifically,it has a direct link to war in the commendatory sense while in neutral and derogatory senses, its references have been broadened;another common phenomenon is that horses in Chinese idioms are usually a large collection. However,English idioms in the use of horse favors on the derogatory sense since they focus more on the nature of horse-stubborn,arrogant,and even condescending. If horses are praised, they mostly refer to the talented people rather than any other things. The similarities and differences in the use of"马"and"horse"help to probe into the color of culture between eastern and western countries.  相似文献

In the inky depths of the sea, scientists have found something big and weird: 'a squid' 23 feet long whose improbably long, skinny arms are bent like elbows. It isn' t the fabled giant squid, which can stretch 60 feet and weigh a ton. It is something new and, in its way, even stranger. And the fact that it has been sighted only recently, in eight locations around the world's oceans, shows how little we know about life in the deep, scientists said.Think about if we discovered a new horse in Africa - something like that. That would knock a lot of biologists on their ears, said William Sager, an oceanographer3 at Texas A& M University. He spotted one of the ghostly white creatures while cruising the Gulf of Mexico in Alvin, a small submersible4 craft used for research.  相似文献

Agroup of scientists claims to have found evidence of nuclear fusion in a vase-size flask of liquid. The researchers say they created tiny bubbles that seemed to have collapsed with enough violence to force atomic nuclei to fuse. Skepticism about the results outweighs confidence in them. National Laboratory and his colleagues are confirmed, scientists will have a new way to study fusion reactions. A far more speculative and exciting possibility is that the tabletop experiments might lead to the long-sought goal of harnessing fusion for gener-  相似文献

OF COURSE YOU' RE TOO smart to believe in glass slippers. You know well that someday your prince might come, but no matter what, you' re going to have to meet him halfway. Still, a modern woman like you would do well to take a second look at classic fairy tales, because beneath the rodent1 chauffeurs2 and talking toads3 lies a lot of surprisingly fresh insight. And fairy-tale heroines aren' t the passive damsels4 in distress you may have thought. Cinderella would never mope5 around and curse the fates for having thrust her into the hands of the stepmother from hell, or waste hours and days obsessing over whether she was too friendly to Prince Charming at the ball. Like Beauty and the rest of her ilk, Cinderella focuses on what she can control: her character. And ultimately, it's her strong moral center that saves her, not some guy on a horse. Not convinced? Passsge 1:It was one of those days in the Wild West. A rugged cowboy with a horrible scar on his face and a shiny gun at his belt rode very slowly into a dusty town as if he was a dead man. He left his horse outside the bar and stepped inside. The bar was full of people. They all gave the stranger a look in a brief moment of silence before they went back to their own drinking and laughing. The stranger ordered a glass of cold beer, gulped it down and walked out slowly-only to find his horse missing.  相似文献

Selection of an appropriate reporting verb and its tense & voice in a particular context is one of the best ways for the writer to present his work appropriately and to communicate effectively with others in the academic community.Previous studies on reporting verbs varied from sample to discipline, however,to my knowledge,no study has specifically addressed the question of whether there is tense and voice variation of reporting verbs in research articles in Introduction and Discussion in agricultural context. The present study is an attempt to investigate the tense and voice variation of reporting verbs and looks for explanations based on 30 agricultural science research articles. Results showed that no predominant tense choice was found in Introduction while simple past tense and present perfect tense were two tense preferences in Discussion.Active voice was found to be predominant in Introduction whereas passive voice was found to be predominant in Discussion.  相似文献

The study of categorization and prototype has been an interesting subject for the scholars in psycholinguistics. They have done different studies to investigate the reasons for the formation of the prototype in people‘s mind. Some scholars believe that cultural factors play an important role in the formation of prototype. This paper is intended to look into the categorization of the fruits in China, and the researcher hopes to get the factors which may to some extent influence their idea of typicality. The researcher believes that the regions where a person grows up in may have a subtle effect on his or her idea of typicality of certain items.  相似文献

With the rapid development of the society, people are expected to improve their language quality as well. So when people have to express something unpleasant, they prefer to employ some mild, implicit and euphemistic expressions. Meanwhile,an increasing number of scientists indulge themselves in studying English euphemisms from different perspectives, such as linguistics, pragmatics, and psychology and so on. English Euphemisms applied in class can not only help create a relaxing and lively atmosphere but also protect the students’ self-esteem and stimulate their interests in English. However, the researches on the effects of applying English euphemisms in English class are few. Therefore, Based on Face-saving Theory, this paper intends to highlight the importance of applying English euphemisms in English teaching.  相似文献

Three horses are standing in a triangular field, which is exactly 100 yards on each side. One horse stands at each comer; and simultaneously all three set off running. Each horse runs after the horse in the adjacent comer on his left, thus following a curved course, which terminates in the middle of the field, all three horses arriving there together. The homes obviously ran at the same speed, but just how far did they run?  相似文献
