New Roles and Responsibilities for the University Library

Abstract

Academic libraries with public access computers are faced with the challenge of balancing patron privacy rights with accountability and system security. What should libraries do when a patron uses a public Internet connection to send harassing email messages or hack into a remote network, or into the library's own system? This article examines the conflicting values of privacy and security. It examines patron authentication as a security measure and the safeguards that should accompany such a system. Several options are offered for addressing this dilemma. A summary of university appropriate use policies is presented with recommendations and a sample policy statement.

Digitized archival documents are available on the PIASA website and are included in the database of the National Archives of Poland.

Applying Traditional Librarianship to New Roles for Special Librarians

ABSTRACT

Public and academic libraries continue to have a vital role in providing reference services. As more and more information is only available in electronic form, reference librarians need to reaffirm their core values. Some of the changes happening in reference include smaller reference collections, the disposition of printed reference books, and the increased use of electronic tools. Other topics include different service models for the reference desk, the changing nature of reference questions, and changes in staffing at the reference desk. Finally, the authors speculate about the future of reference services.

Establishing a medical library network for the Metropolitan Detroit Area

Since 1962 the members of the loosely organized Detroit Medical Library Group have carried on a slow but steady self-examination program. They found a need to increase resources and developed a periodical exchange, then a need to identify these resources and did so by means of a serials list. More recently, a similar program for texts and monograph resources was begun. Data, more particularly that of the interlibrary loan process, is being gathered to show the flow within the area and the flow from outside to further identify the existing resources. They have made contact with the administrators of the biomedical institutions and gained their backing (a) to further study the makeup of the community and (b) to formulate an administrative structure through which these institutions can act. These activities are evidence of the beginning of a strong medical library network for the Metropolitan Detroit Area.

Conservation of a Chinese gu at the Canadian Conservation Institute

Abstract

Conservation and technical issues pertaining to the investigation of six mediaeval Spanish ceramic lustre fragments are reported. Assessment of methods and materials to replicate the lustre glazes indicates that the spray application of nacreous (pearlescent) pigments in combination with conventional inorganic pigments and transparent colorants in an acrylic lacquer gives good results. The salient optical features oflustre glazes and nacreous pigments are discussed. Scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with electron diffraction studies are employed to characterize the glaze and ceramic body composition of the fragments. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that a uniform dispersion of copper crystallites, c. 2-4nm in diameter, is responsible for the lustre effect in one sherd.

本文以40所具有一定关注度和影响力的欧美地区高校图书馆数字人文中心为调查对象,运用文献调研法和网络调研法对被调研高校的支撑部门、人员配备、教学支持、科研支持四个方面情况进行调查和特点总结。国外高校数字人文中心主要有以下四点特色:建设主体多样性、图书馆定位明确,多元化、专业化的人员配备,系统化的数字人文教学支持和全方位的数字人文科研支持。我国高校图书馆需要找准定位,注重校内合作和跨机构合作,建设数字人文专业人才队伍,构建数字人文教学支持体系,打造“一站式”数字人文科研服务平台。
