Recent changes in the media industries and in pre‐vocational education have presented significant opportunities and challenges for media educators. This article sketches the broader context of these developments, and considers their implications for media education in terms of both course provision and pedagogic practice in schools and further education. It considers some of the possibilities and limitations of past attempts to teach about the structure and functioning of the media industries, and to integrate critical study and practical production. The article concludes by identifying a number of issues for further research and investigation.  相似文献

Higher education generally is disappointed with the media - and newspapers, radio and television are not very interested in higher education. Stark statements that must be qualified and explained, but still fair headlines that sum up the unsatisfactory relationship between universities, polytechnics and colleges and the media. Of course disappointment with the media is not confined to higher education. Nor are the media often ready to accept the self-evaluation by institutions of their own significance. But the mismatch between the expectations of higher education and the priorities of the media seems to be especially severe. The purpose of this article is to test the truth of this impression of mutual ignorance, both actual and intentional, and to discuss its consequences for the making of higher education policy.  相似文献

A lesson in Gestalt theory was presented to college students via lecture, videotape, audiotape, and printed notes. Comparing the effectiveness of various mass media, it was found that the group with the printed notes performed best on an examination of the material, followed by the lecture and videotape groups who fared equally well, and by the audio tape group who did the poorest. A test of prolonged retention two months later revealed that each group showed a significant drop in level of retention, but the relationship between the various medias remained the same. The general findings gave no support to McLuhan’s theory that the medium is the message. The content of the material and the attitude of the students greatly influenced the effectiveness of the media.  相似文献

Over the past four years, France has been engaged in a massive reform of its higher education system, reshaping the structure and content of studies from undergraduate through to research degrees. It is commonly acknowledged, by Right as much by the Left, that France is not educating enough students at higher education level and that, if intentions are acts, then by the turn of the century, the size of the intake should rise by half again to around 2 million enrolments. This consensus, however, is fragile and limited. Whether it can hold together depends as much on the way complementary refines in the field of management and participation structures are carried out as upon the attitudes of deeply vested interests inside the university. It is widely accepted dogma that consequential decisions are better made with multiple measures, because using but a single one is thought more likely to be laden with biases and errors that can be better controlled with a wider source of evidence for making judgments. Unfortunately, advocates of using multiple measures too rarely provide detailed directions of exactly how to use them.
