The scientometric analysis of publications based on the materials of the peer-reviewed journal <Emphasis Type="Italic">The Physics of Nanoobjects and Nanotechnologies</Emphasis> of the All-Union Institute for Scientific and Technical Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences (VINITI RAS): Graphene

A comparative analysis of the thematic scope of publications in the literature focusing on graphene in the period between 2010 and the first half of 2011 is conducted. The development patterns for physics of graphene are highlighted. Hotspots and emerging trends are outlined in this area, based on the analysis of publications in volumes 1–12 of the 2010 edition and volumes 1–6 of the 2011 edition of the peer-reviewed journal The Physics of Nanoobjects and Nanotechnologies published by the All Union Institute for Scientific and Technical Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences (VINITI RAS).     

Scientometric analysis of the reports presented at the Fourth International Nanotechnology Forum in Moscow, 2011

This paper presents brief information and an analytical overview of the reports that were presented at the Fourth International Nanotechnology Forum in Moscow on October 26–28, 2011. It contains scientometric data on the participants of the Forum and the distribution of authors by cities and research centers. The problems and achievements of Russian and foreign nanotechnology science are outlined.     

Mechanics in the VINITI RAS: from an abstract journal to a database. The history of its development. Statistical characteristics in the period from 1953 to 2008

This paper considers the history of the creation and development of the VINITI RAS AJ in the field of mechanics from 1953 to 2008. The changes in the back issues and dynamics of the distribution of the total number of documents in the Mechanics AJ/DB are traced. The document information flow of the “Mechanics” DB from 1953 to 2008 is statistically analyzed.     

Solar cells and nanotechnology: Bibliometric analysis of publications that are reflected in RZh Fizika VINITI RAN and the Web of Science database

Solar cells of the third generation (after the bulk and thin-film ones that are mainly based on inorganic semiconductors, mostly of silicon) use the leading technologies of the 21st century, including nanotechnologies based on nanomaterials, mainly based on nano-structured or ultrafine inorganic semiconductors, graphene, fullerenes, as well as polymers and low-molecular-weight organic semiconductors. This paper compares the results of an analysis of publications on solar cells, mainly nanostructured and nanoscale cells, that are reflected in the RZh Fizika VINITI RAN and included in the Web of Science database.

基于Excel的统计分析系统在期刊编辑部审稿中的应用

期刊审稿过程中非统计专业审稿人很难对统计结果进行审核,导致论文中的统计学错误很多。基于Excel的统计分析系统,不需要专业的统计学知识,只要了解一般统计学常识就能方便使用,特别适合期刊编辑部编辑和审稿人员审核稿件中常见的统计学问题。实际应用结果表明,该系统非常实用,对减少期刊论文中的统计错误大有裨益。     

Popular research topics in the recent journal publications of library and information science

Research topic studies have gained popularity in many disciplines, including library and information science (LIS). However, the lack of representation of library science and librarianship in literature indicates a research bias due to the preset methodology parameters, which are commonly based on impact factor scores in the Journal Citation Report of Thomson Reuters. In research, the authors utilize an improved selection criterion of journals and author-supplied keyword clustering and analysis technique to study the most recent ten years of LIS journal publications. This article presents a clear picture of popular research topics in seminal literature to help practicing librarians and library science scholars gain a better understanding and considerable prediction on the research trends in the LIS field.     

The role of academic journal publications in the UK Research Assessment Exercise

This article explores the evolution of the role of academic journal articles submitted to the UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). By reviewing their role, it is possible to see how the changes from quantitative to qualitative assessment (and the resulting problems surrounding the definition of ‘quality’ journals) has impacted both on the journals selected by academics for publishing their research and the assessment of them. Although only one part of RAE submissions, the listing of published research outputs provides the primary evidence for research quality to most RAE panels, and is a significant driver of the final grade awarded, and thus the funding received by submitting institutions. The RAE, being a peer‐reviewed assessment exercise, mirrors in some ways the peer‐review process immured within scholarly publication. The developing role of journal publications as a vehicle for academic research output is examined via the chronology of the RAE, before assessing the current situation in which published journal output formed almost 70% of all output assessed by RAE panels in the latest exercise. The impact of this increased importance of academic journals in the assessment process is considered not only for academics but also for the wider community, i.e. publishers and libraries.

The activities of VINITI RAS as a key organization of the Commonwealth of Independent States for the exchange of scientific and technological information

The activities of VINITI as a Key Organization of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) which is responsible for the interstate exchange of scientific and technical information are analyzed; major areas of the activities of the Key Organization are presented. One of the main priority areas is the participation, jointly with the National Centers for Scientific and Technological Information and the Interstate Coordination Council for Scientific and Technological Information, in the scientific information and analytical support of research activities and international programs and projects that are implemented by the CIS member states in the area of innovation.     

Reporting on a survey of peer-reviewed publishing in cultural materials conservation: perceptions,preferences, and decision-making

Specialist publications are an important part of professional and disciplinary development. They serve to communicate research; enable the development of a shared, contestable, and expanding knowledge base; support the educational programmes that advance the profession; grow practice; and inform the evolution of the discipline. In conservation, professional and peer-reviewed journals and other forms of publications support cultural, organisational, and scientific development; facilitate new and improved forms of conservation professional practice; enable the growth of a distinctive research-led discipline; and help conservation to more effectively compete with other disciplines for influence and funding. This paper reports on the findings of a study that investigated conservators’ opinions and experiences of peer-reviewed publishing. This study examined the value conservators place on the dissemination of their research; the obstacles to, and incentives in publishing; the views held by conservators of the benefits of publication to themselves and the field; and the impact of the field's inherent interdisciplinarity on the pattern of conservation publishing. Eighty-six conservators (conservators and conservation scientists) and ten journal editors completed an online questionnaire focusing on the communication of knowledge within the field of cultural materials conservation. Findings suggest that while the peer review process is valued, a significant number who responded indicated a preference for forms of communication other than in peer review journals or publishing in general.     

Scientometric analysis of papers submitted to the international forum on nanotechnologies held in Moscow, 2008

This is a brief information-analytical review of papers submitted on the First International Forum on Nanotechnologies held in Moscow in December 2008. Scientometric data on the participants, their origin by region and research center and analysis of advancements and problems of Russian studies on nanotechnology are discussed.

Predicting research excellence at the individual level: The importance of publication rate,top journal publications,and top 10% publications in the case of early career mathematicians

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between publication rate, top journal publications and excellence during the first eight years of the career, and how well publication rate, top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career can predict whether an author attain excellence in the fifth to the eighth year. The dataset consisted of publication track records of 406 early career mathematicians in the sub-field of number theory collected from the MathSciNet database. Logistic regression and dominance analysis was applied to the data. The major conclusions were (1) publication rate had a positive effect on excellence during the first eighth years of the career. However, those who publish many articles in top journals, which implicitly require a high publication count, had an even higher probability of attaining excellence. These results suggest that publishing in top journals is very important in the process of attaining excellence in the early career in addition to publishing many papers; and (2) a dominance analysis indicated that the number of top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career were the most important predictors of who will attain excellence in the later career. The results are discussed in relation to indicator development and science policy.     

基于引用期刊质量的影响因子修正法

长期以来学术期刊影响因子的计算仅仅统计被引用文章的篇数而没有考虑引用期刊的学术质量,这种计算方法有不尽合理之处.认为在计算影响因子时应充分考虑引用期刊的质量,建议以引用文献的期刊质量为权重对原影响因子公式进行修正.经统计学模拟计算表明,修正后的公式能更客观地对期刊进行评价,这将有利于建立起更公正、合理的期刊评价体系.     

The information support of the research in sinology based on electronic resources of the INION RAS

This paper considers the basic categories of consumers of information on sinology. It describes the results of analyzing the problem and thematic structure of the document flow on the problems of China, which is contained in databases on social sciences and humanities of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences (INION) of the RAS. The principles for complex processing of documents and searching for information on sinology are uncovered based on a complex of linguistic instruments. The potential for creating a database on country studies database that is focused on the information needs of sinologists is determined.     

高校学报编辑人才职业满意度调查分析

采用问卷法调查重庆市高校学报编辑人才职业满意度,以10个因子代表满意度10个维度.结果显示:职业满意度总体评价良好,及格线以上人数占78.6%;"领导重视""人际关系"2个因子得分较低,并与其他因子高度关联,是影响编辑职业满意度的最大负面因素;"报酬待遇"因子得分最低,但与其他因子关联性不大;"立志本行、发挥特长"因子得分较高,且与其他因子高度关联,是影响满意度的最大激励因素.     

关于利用被引频次支付期刊论文部分稿酬的尝试

目前,国内期刊社关于论文作者稿酬的支付没有统一的标准,有的期刊社不支付稿酬,有的期刊社稿酬支付仍然沿用1999年发布的《出版文字作品报酬规定》,还有些期刊社采取优稿优酬制度,导致作者意见较多。为了更加公平合理地给期刊论文作者支付稿酬,建议国内期刊社可采用基本稿酬+被引频次支付部分稿酬的办法,并就其依据、实施方法、统计被引频次时间范围、不同期刊引用区别对待及其应用的可行性进行分析总结。
