YANG Weiping takes the helm of Beijing Institute of Genomics

Dr. Yang Weiping has been appointed executive vice director-general of the CAS Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG). He obtained his B.S. degree in biology from Hebei Normal University in 1985, and his PhD in ecology from the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) in 1996. He went to the US in 1998 for six-month training in biology diversity information system management and in 2000 he became a professor of IOZ. Afterwards he went to UK for an advanced study in project administration and organization management. ...     

New leader of the Institute of Zoology

Prof. MENG Anming, a geneticist from Tsinghua University, has been named the executive vice director-general of the CAS Institute of Zoology （IOZ） in Beijing. He is to succeed Prof. ZHANG Zhibin, who is leaving to head the CAS Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology, to take the helm of the institute with a history that could be traced back to the 1920s.

Unlike birds,bats might use a different magnetic compass to navigate

Bats, the only mammals known to possess the real ability to fly, have fascinated zoologists for a long time with their long-distance migration. How do they find their way home from an altitude of kilometers above sea level, where their stunt of ultrasonic echolocation does not work？ Recent discoveries supported the theory that bats might be able to use magnetic clues to figure out their own position,just like what birds do. However, the latest results from a joint study by a group of researchers from the CAS, East China Normal University and University of Auckland reveal that bats apply an interesting strategy different from the one underlying birds＇ orientation technique, though they both are believed to derive information about their position from the subtle changes in the magnetic field of the Earth.

Frogs Communicate by Means of Ultrasonic Sounds

People are always fascinated by ways that some members of mammalian species (such as dolphins, bats and some rodents) communicate using sounds that we cannot hear. But think twice if you say the capacity of producing and detecting ultrasounds (frequencies greater than 20kHz) is limited to mammalians. A study implemented by Prof. SHEN Junxian from the CAS Institute of Biophysics (IBP) and colleagues in CAS and abroad showed that a rare frog species in China should also be added to that list. It is the first documented case of a non-mammalian species being able to use ultrasonic communication. Their work was reported in the March 16 issue of the journal Nature.     

CAS to Renovate Its Campus in Northern Suburb of Beijing

CAS will soon begin work on reconstruction of its campus in the northern suburb of Beijing. It is the Academy's largest ever investment in infrastructure.Covering an area of about 376,000 square meters with a floor space of 350,000 square meters, the new research park will be home to nine CAS institutes. On July 17,2013,Chinese President XI Jinping paid a visit to the CAS campuses on Yuquan Road in western Beijing.At the Institute of High Energy Physics,President XI inspected the Beijing Electron Positron Collider,China’s first large-scale scientific facility,including the Beijing Spectrometer and the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility.Then he participated in a meeting at the University of CAS,listened to a work report from CAS President BAI Chunli and delivered an important speech on scientific innovation to CAS officials and scientist representatives.

CAS Announces Winners of Award for International Scientific Cooperation 2018

<正>Three foreign scientists received the 2018 International Scientific Cooperation Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Jan 17 for their contribution to China’s scientific development.The winners are Singaporean fracture mechanics expert Shih Choon Fong, Norwegian ecologist Nils Stenseth and Japanese climatologist Toshio Koike. Their certificates and medals were presented by BAI Chunli, President of the academy, in a ceremony in Beijing.

Some suggestions on how to promote the development of social information level in these cities are also put forward.

The August of 2007 is a busy month for the China-Australia Center on Water Resources Research affiliated to the CAS Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) in Beijing.
