Beside a swinging centrifugal separator, Dr. Safiriyu Idowu Ola welcomed the author to his cozy "cabin" at the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) in Beijing. Around him are busy PhD students of the Fertilization Biology group working in the molecular biology laboratory. The group is part of the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Biology based at IOZ, which made itself well known at home and abroad by successfully cloning a small  相似文献

Dr. Yang Weiping has been appointed executive vice director-general of the CAS Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG). He obtained his B.S. degree in biology from Hebei Normal University in 1985, and his PhD in ecology from the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) in 1996. He went to the US in 1998 for six-month training in biology diversity information system management and in 2000 he became a professor of IOZ. Afterwards he went to UK for an advanced study in project administration and organization management. ...  相似文献

Prof. MENG Anming, a geneticist from Tsinghua University, has been named the executive vice director-general of the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) in Beijing. He is to succeed Prof. ZHANG Zhibin, who is leaving to head the CAS Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology, to take the helm of the institute with a history that could be traced back to the 1920s.  相似文献

A project has been initiatedat the CAS Institute of Zo-ology (IOZ) to develop bio-transducers by imitation of insectolfactory organs. This is an initial attempt by CASzoologists in animal bionics. Bionicresources are an inexhaustible trea-sure house for knowledge, said CASPresident Lu Yongxiang at a recentvideo conference on the develop-mental strategies of CAS institutesin the life sciences. Bats, the only mammals known to possess the real ability to fly, have fascinated zoologists for a long time with their long-distance migration. How do they find their way home from an altitude of kilometers above sea level, where their stunt of ultrasonic echolocation does not work? Recent discoveries supported the theory that bats might be able to use magnetic clues to figure out their own position, just like what birds do. However, the latest results from a joint study by a group of researchers from the CAS, East China Normal University and University of Auckland reveal that bats apply an interesting strategy different from the one underlying birds' orientation technique, though they both are believed to derive information about their position from the subtle changes in the magnetic field of the Earth.  相似文献

Prof. WANG Song (WANG Sung) with the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) is among the first scholars to realize the prime importance of wildlife and biodiversity and to initiate early conservation efforts in China. To mark the UN International Year of Biodiversity, BCAS reporter SONG Jianlan invites Prof. Wang and his cooperator and IOZ colleague, Dr. XIE Yan to give a review of the past practice and offer advice to future conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in the country.  相似文献

People are always fascinated by ways that some members of mammalian species (such as dolphins, bats and some rodents) communicate using sounds that we cannot hear. But think twice if you say the capacity of producing and detecting ultrasounds (frequencies greater than 20kHz) is limited to mammalians. A study implemented by Prof. SHEN Junxian from the CAS Institute of Biophysics (IBP) and colleagues in CAS and abroad showed that a rare frog species in China should also be added to that list. It is the first documented case of a non-mammalian species being able to use ultrasonic communication. Their work was reported in the March 16 issue of the journal Nature.  相似文献

CAS will soon begin work on reconstruction of its campus in the northern suburb of Beijing. It is the Academy's largest ever investment in infrastructure.Covering an area of about 376,000 square meters with a floor space of 350,000 square meters, the new research park will be home to nine CAS institutes. Besides six institutes which are located in the area  相似文献

Among the galaxy of research and development organizations in northwest Beijing's Zhongguancun district, known as China's Silicon Valley, two are especially well-known to IT researchers: Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), and, within a few blocks on the other side of the street, the CAS Institute of Automation (CASIA). While most people in Chinese scientific organizations strive to move to a large foreign counterpart, Dr. Stan Z. Li (LI Ziqing) moves against the stream.  相似文献

Fruit is an important source of minerals and vitamins in the human diet. However, how to maintain the quality of postharvest fruits has been a long-standing problem for botanists all over the world. At the foot of Fragrant Hills in the western suburbs of Beijing, a group of scienists from the Insitute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences have been exploring biological and genetic means to answer that old question. Under the leadership of Prof. TIAN Shiping, the team scored remarkable progresses in recent years and has become a leader in the field.  相似文献

The August of 2007 is a busy month for the China-Australia Center on Water Resources Research affiliated to the CAS Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) in Beijing. Acting as a bridge between scholars of the two countries in the field, it brought together Chinese researchers and their Australian colleagues to take part in various academic activities ranging from workshops to field studies.  相似文献
