Methods for automatically evaluating answers to complex questions

Evaluation is a major driving force in advancing the state of the art in language technologies. In particular, methods for automatically assessing the quality of machine output is the preferred method for measuring progress, provided that these metrics have been validated against human judgments. Following recent developments in the automatic evaluation of machine translation and document summarization, we present a similar approach, implemented in a measure called POURPRE, an automatic technique for evaluating answers to complex questions based on n-gram co-occurrences between machine output and a human-generated answer key. Until now, the only way to assess the correctness of answers to such questions involves manual determination of whether an information “nugget” appears in a system's response. The lack of automatic methods for scoring system output is an impediment to progress in the field, which we address with this work. Experiments with the TREC 2003, TREC 2004, and TREC 2005 QA tracks indicate that rankings produced by our metric correlate highly with official rankings, and that POURPRE outperforms direct application of existing metrics.

本文对当前国家重点档案抢救修复核心问题进行了深入研究。通过对国家重点档案抢救修复的工作现状进行分析,剖析了目前抢救修复工作方法中存在的问题,阐明了国家重点档案抢救修复的真实含义和必须遵守的原则。确立正确的指导思想是国家重点档案抢救修复的核心问题。在国家重点档案抢救修复工作中应进行系统化、科学化管理,贯彻工程化管理思想,建立操作规范与质量检验标准,加强人员培训和经费管理,以确保抢救修复工作顺利完成。     

新世纪应当解决的三个问题

档案事业的发展进入了新的世纪,一些在上个世纪有可能解决,却没能解决的问题,在新世纪之初应当解决了.     

Arousal and affective responses to writing styles

Although arousal measures have been employed to predict responses to television programs and music, they have not been used previously to evaluate print media. In this study, skin conductance response (SCR) and a mood scale were used to measure physiological and affective responses to three factors of newswriting style: narrative vs. traditional; direct quotations vs. paraphrased statements; and active vs. passive verbs and adjectives. News stories about the mass suicides in Guyana were used as stimulus materials. Narrative style generated the strongest SCR responses. Narrative style, direct quotations, and active verbs and adjectives interacted to produce the most positive affective responses. The study raises a number of questions about the nature of responses to reading.

Asked and answered--online: how two medical libraries are using OCLC's QuestionPoint to answer reference questions

This paper imparts the experiences of two similar but unaffiliated medical libraries that use QuestionPoint, OCLC's collaborative virtual reference product. The authors introduce the major features of QuestionPoint, with particular emphasis on its asynchronous e-mail reference service. After presenting how both libraries have employed this service in their respective environments, the paper examines the quantity and quality of reference questions submitted via QuestionPoint. The types of questions are explicated, and statistical trends are compared.
