Searching a biomedical bibliographic database from Bulgaria: the ABS database

BACKGROUND: The University of Sofia, Bulgaria, disseminates local biomedical literature (1994 to present) through a free online database, ABS. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to systematically search ABS, identify citations to controlled trials and discover what proportion of these studies are to be found on medline. METHODS: We searched using Bulgarian and English phrases; manually selected citations of controlled trials and sought these citations on medline. Results: Using the two languages, we found a total of 628 unique citations, 47 of which seem to be relevant controlled trials (precision 7.48%, 13% of ABS citations were found on medline). The trials in ABS commonly focused on evaluation of care for people with cardiovascular or urological problems. DISCUSSION: ABS is another source of easily accessed trials not readily available elsewhere.     

Landmark United States biomedical ethics cases: a selected bibliography

The past thirty years have demonstrated a dramatic shift in the traditional physician-patient relationship, from one that has traditionally been paternalistic, or physician-focused, to one that recognizes patient autonomy and is predominately patient-centered. This evolution of patient autonomy has revolutionized the field of medical-legal ethics, as evidenced by the numerous landmark court cases described in this paper. Patients have demanded, and received, the right to make their own decisions about a variety of issues, many of them end-of-life decisions, including withholding treatment, withdrawing treatment, refusing treatment, whether or not to be resuscitated, and their right to die with dignity. Technological advances in the areas of human experimentation, resuscitation, organ transplantation, and assisted reproduction have contributed to the ethical dilemmas faced by patients, physicians, ethicists, and the courts. Due in large part to this shift in attitude and behavior from paternalism to patient autonomy, and technological advances that allow people to live indefinitely, medical-ethical issues never before encountered are now in the forefront of many peoples' lives. The landmark United States ethical-legal cases cited here illustrate society's change in attitude which favors autonomous decision making by an increasingly consumer-oriented public.

Battling the biomedical information explosion: a plan for implementing a quality filtered database.

In 1980 an article appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine stating that two-thirds of the studies appearing in the best medical journals contain unwarranted conclusions. In order to deal with the ever increasing mass of biomedical information (termed a "journalistic blastoma" by one editor), IAIMS has extolled the use of quality filters, devices to sort through the literature and sift the good from the bad. The complexity of the task is staggering. Quality is obviously subjective, and its nature raises the question of whether our users can be taught the necessary skills to systematically evaluate the literature. This report is based on a research project that grew into an elective course for medical students at Texas Tech University School of Medicine on "Critical Appraisal of the Biomedical Literature."

Area Health Education as the foundation for a statewide biomedical communications network

In 1972, the Medical University of South Carolina was awarded a contract to establish four Area Health Education Centers in South Carolina. These centers, based in community hospitals, provide residency programs and clinical instruction for medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health students and continuing educational programs for health professionals. A plan for delivering library and other information services to the designated Area Health Education Centers is described.

Professional writing assistance: effects on biomedical publishing

The involvement of professional writers in the reporting of scientific research has generated considerable discussion. I reviewed the literature relating to this debate. Some commentators argue that professional writing assistance can inappropriately influence the reporting of research, undermine accountability for the published work, and deceive readers when the professional writer's contribution is not acknowledged. On the other hand, it has been argued that professional writers improve the quality and readability of papers, speed up the publication process, and undertake important educational activities. These arguments are based on anecdote and opinion rather than on evidence from well‐conducted research. Although some recommendations have been proposed, there is no widely accepted published guidance about how writing assistance should be used. The biomedical community should consider implementing initiatives that will facilitate research about professional writing assistance – an outcome that would make for a better‐informed debate.
