中国现代小说在古今、中外、雅俗三方面的沟通和融合状况我们称之为“三通”，现代小说作家在追求“三通”境界方面付出了艰苦努力。本文认为，现代小说主要是由近代通俗小说分化为两支发展起来的，新文学作家努力实行小说变革从而突破了古典小说传统，而现代通俗作家则在继承古典传统的过程中努力使其小说现代化；现代通俗作家主要联系古今，“俗而向雅”．新文学作家重在融合中外，“雅而向俗”，两者共同促进小说向“雅俗共赏”的境界发展。
